I am sorry about your mom hon. There are many ways to prevent osteoporosis but the treatment for a woman who actually has it is different then the prevention methods. Osteoporosis is very common in menopausal women. There really isn't anything specific diet wise that she can do, but maintaining a healthy diet would only benefit her. If she is an inactive person then she needs to start slowly.... osteoporosis IS bone loss which makes the bones more fragile as well as the joints.... she wouldn't want to start heavy lifting or running because her bones are weak and she WILL do damage.... my suggestion personally is to walk 2x a day, 30 minutes each time and talk to her doctor about stretching exercises and very light resistance training that she can do at home. When my grandmother got the disease the doctor gave her a little booklet of exercises.... As for supplements THIS is where she will benefit the most... ABSOLUTELY must take calcium and vitamin D. I also suggest she get a prescription for diphosphonates (this is a catagory of drugs that help fight/treat osteoporosis and help with bone loss). Good Luck :)

Get her on bioidentical hormones (have her read Suzanne Somers' newest books to learn how to start and know how to approach the subject, you have to be confident in your convictions because conventional doctors are against bioidenticals and frankly, they are full of SHIT), and get her weight lifting! Weight training, done with sufficient resistance, WILL rebuild bone, if used in conjunction with the hormone treatments.

All the supplements in the world won't do a bit of good if her bones are not subjected to the stress of lifting weights. Women deteriorate because they don't use their bodies to be strong, they starve themselves to be skinny and lead sedentary lives.

Here's the book I'm thinking of, it's only like $8 on Amazon:

Alternative treatment
Alternative treatments for osteoporosis focus on maintaining or building strong bones. A healthy diet low in fats and animal products and containing whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, and calcium-rich foods (such as dairy products, dark-green leafy vegetables, sardines, salmon, and almonds), along with nutritional supplements (such as calcium, magnesium, and vitamin D), and weight-bearing exercises are important components of both conventional prevention and treatment strategies and alternative approaches to the disease. In addition, alternative practitioners recommend a variety of botanical medicines or herbal supplements. Herbal supplements designed to help slow bone loss emphasize the use of calcium-containing plants, such as horsetail (Equisetum arvense), oat straw (Avena sativa), alfalfa (Medicago sativa), licorice (Glycyrrhiza galbra), marsh mallow (Althaea officinalis), and yellow dock (Rumex crispus). Homeopathic remedies focus on treatments believed to help the body absorb calcium. These remedies are likely to include such substances as Calcarea carbonica (calcium carbonate) or silica. In traditional Chinese medicine, practitioners recommend herbs thought to slow or prevent bone loss, including dong quai (Angelica sinensis) and Asian ginseng (Panax ginseng). Natural hormone therapy, using plant estrogens (from soybeans) or progesterone (from wild yams), may be recommended for women who cannot or choose not to take synthetic hormones.

This is a little lenghty, but there is a lot of good info.....

Menopause means the permanent ending of menstruation in a woman due to the ovaries' decreased production of hormones like estrogen and progesterone, which means the end of a woman’s natural ability to bear children. Menopause occurs anywhere between late forties and early fifties. Menopause before age 35 may occur as a result of a surgical procedure, treatment of a disease, or illness. In these cases it is referred to as induced or premature Menopause. Each woman experiences menopause differently. Menopause is an important time in a woman's life. Her body is going through changes that can have an effect on her social life, her feelings about herself, and her performance at work. Contrary to the old-fashioned view that life is all downhill after menopause, many women today find that the years after menopause offer new recognition and fresh beginnings. To have a positive attitude towards menopause as a natural, essential and healthy phase of womanhood is important.

Menopause occurs in two stages:

1. Peri-menopause: This is the onset of noticeable signs of Menopause when a woman may begin experiencing irregular periods and changes such as hot flashes, night sweats, and vaginal dryness. Some women do not experience these bothersome changes until menopause actually occurs. The perimenopausal period can be particularly difficult for women. Unfortunately, there is no effective conventional treatment for alleviating these initial symptoms of menopause. That is why a variety of Homeopathic remedies are being used to help during this transition.

2. Post-menopause: This is the time 12 months after your last period, when the ovaries are no longer producing estrogen and progesterone. This is when you notice the severity of your physical and emotional symptoms.
Symptoms of Menopause:

Not all women experience symptoms, but for those who do the most common menopausal symptoms are:

• Hot flashes.
• Vaginal dryness which increases the chances of vaginal infections.
• Psychological disturbances causing mood swings, depression, anxiety, emotional confusion, making a woman more sensitive, tearful, and fearful.
• Sleep disturbances.
• Night sweats.
• Fatigue.
• Loss of libido, that is decreased or loss of interest in sex.
• Heart palpitations.
• Headaches and backaches.
• Changes in skin and hair.
• Urinary Incontinence.
• Postmenopausal women are at higher risk of heart disease and osteoporosis (thinning of bones).
• Weight gain.

Why treat Menopause with Homeopathy?

Growing number of women today are dissatisfied with the harmful side effects of Conventional Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) and are on the lookout for safer, more Holistic ways of approaching the symptoms of menopause. Classical Homeopathic treatment can be used as an alternative to Hormone Replacement Therapy, in the treatment of menopausal symptoms, as it is individually geared to each woman’s condition and constitution by treating her at the mental, emotional, and physical levels which makes it a popular alternative for menopausal discomforts.

Natural therapy like Homeopathy is the safest and well recommended treatment before, during, and after menopause because it stimulates the natural hormonal balance without the use of harmful drugs. Homeopathic treatment along with healthy living and a sense of purpose in life can minimize the changes that happen during this period.

Homeopathy offers a wider range of options than Conventional medicine. Constitutional Homeopathic treatment with the management of an experienced and professional Homeopath is an excellent choice for menopausal symptoms. Below I have noted a very few basic Homeopathic remedies. There symptoms indicate the characteristic features of the woman’s individuality, to who this remedy might be suitable for Menopausal symptoms.

Sepia: This remedy is best indicated for woman who has hot flashes with profuse perspiration all day and night, but with a chilly feeling. Her symptoms are worse for slightest exertion mental or physical. She has profuse perspiration at the genitals during menopause. Difficult or painful intercourse. Constantly has a dragging feeling in the pelvis. She feels worn out and weak. She is likely to be sad and indifferent to her job or family.

Pulsatilla: This remedy is indicated for a woman who is usually soft and emotional, with changeable moods and a tendency toward tears, with irregular periods, uneasy and insecure feelings, alternating heat and chills, and lack of thirst. Her symptoms are mainly aggravated in stuffy rooms and she feels better in open air.

Staphysagria: These women have severe vaginal dryness and thinning, with very painful soreness from sexual intercourse. She also complains of involuntary urination.
Sanguinaria: is indicated when the right side of the body is more troubled than the left. The woman suffers from itching all over her body, heavy vaginal discharge, sore breasts mainly right, and headaches on the right side of her head.

Lachesis Mutus: Is a good remedy for women who wake up from hot flashes. She feels hot all the time. This remedy bests suits woman who are talkative, jealous and suspicious. She prefers to be alone and may be especially depressed in the morning. Symptoms are better in the open air and after emotional outbursts, but worse during and after sleep, in warmth and in the sunlight.

Natrum Muriaticum: The woman complains of vaginal dryness and water retention with a marked desire for salt. Best suited to woman who are sensitive and introvert. She may have suffered from prolonged grief and suppressed feelings.
Other measures along with a Homeopathic treatment that can significantly reduce the risk of Menopause and dramatically optimize health are as follows:

• Stress management and Exercise, would help control your hot flashes, insomnia (sleeping problems). Regular exercises, like walking, may also help prevent osteoporosis. Exercise helps increase conversion of androgens to estrogens and can help ease menopausal symptoms.
• Wearing cotton clothing for night sweats.
• Use vaginal lubricants or moisturizers for dryness of the vagina or painful intercourse.
• Doing Kegel exercise for your pelvic floor muscles to control urinary incontinence.
• Women who are taking high consumption of soy products have a low incidence of hot flashes during menopause. Soy products contain compounds called Phytoestrogens that are related in structure to estrogen.
• Getting enough calcium in your diet can help strengthen your bones.
• Other ways of reducing negative effects of menopause include eating a healthy diet, which includes fruits, vegetables and grains, reduce sugar and salt intake.
• Avoiding caffeinated drinks, alcohol. These beverages can make the blood vessels dilate and worsen hot flashes. Quit smoking.

Other women health problems that can be successfully treated with Homeopathy are Premenstrual symptoms, Menstrual disorders, Menstrual cramping, Cystitis (Bladder Infections), Vaginitis (Vaginal inflammation due to infections), Cysts & Fibroids, Endometriosis, Fertility and Contraception, Pelvic Inflammatory disease, Prolapse, Pregnancy problems like morning sickness, varicose vein, etc., Postpartum depression, Breast Infections during breast feeding, Depression, Anxiety, and many more.

Homeopathy is reassuring and helpful for both physical and emotional aspects of menopause, and most women, in addition to relief from their discomforts, experience an enhancement in self-awareness and well being after the treatment. Thus you can rely on Homeopathy to achieve optimal health during menopause and into the later years of your life. Hence, to conclude Homeopathy can present good health to women in all stages of their lives from infancy through old age. It is of assistance in all sorts of emotional, mental and physical problems that a woman is likely to experience, and can help her through the transitional and developmental milestones of her life.

Homeopathic Remedies for Osteoporosis

Also Indexed As: Brittle Bone Disease

* Introduction
* Remedy options
* Amount to take

Many factors can contribute to osteoporosis, including the aging process (especially in women after menopause), inadequate exercise, dietary errors or deficiencies, and effects of certain drugs. Homeopathic remedies will not reverse existing bone loss, but can bring the body into better balance and help its minerals and nutrients be used efficiently. Remedies are also helpful for aching bones and prevention or healing of fractures.

For dosage information, please read the information at the end of this section. See also “Using Homeopathy With Professional Guidance” in What Is Homeopathy?

Calcarea carbonica: This remedy is often helpful to individuals who are easily tired by exertion and tend to feel anxious and overwhelmed from work or stress. The person may be chilly, flabby or overweight, and feel worse from cold and dampness. Back pain, swollen joints, and a sweaty head at night are often seen. People who need this remedy often have strong cravings for both eggs and sweets.

Calcarea phosphorica: Stiffness, soreness, and weakness of the bones and joints often are experienced by those who need this remedy. Aching in the bones of the neck, upper back, and hips can be distressing. Deep tiredness frequently is felt, especially after exercise. Calcium deposits and bone-spurs may develop, even while general bone-loss is taking place, and fractures may be slow to heal. A feeling of dissatisfaction and a strong desire for travel or a change of circumstances are often seen in people who need Calcarea phosphorica.

Phosphorus: This remedy is often helpful to people who are sensitive, suggestible, imaginative, but easily tired or weakened physically. Bones may be less strong than normal, or be slow to heal after fractures. Weakness is often felt in the spine, with burning pain between the shoulder blades. People who need this remedy are often tall and thin with an easily-flushing face. A desire for refreshing foods (especially ice cream) and strong thirst for cold or carbonated drinks are other indications for Phosphorus.

Silicea (also called Silica): People who need this remedy are often nervous, easily tired, very chilly, and tend to sweat at night. They have a refined or delicate appearance, and often have weakness in the spine. Their injuries are slow to heal, and they tend to have a low resistance to infection. Moderate exercise often warms the person up and improves energy.

Symphytum: When osteoporosis is a problem, fractures often occur from mild trauma. This remedy can be useful for strengthening and healing bones when new fractures occur, and also helpful when pain persists in old, healed fractures.
Homeopathy Dosage Directions

Select the remedy that most closely matches the symptoms. In conditions where self-treatment is appropriate, unless otherwise directed by a physician, a lower potency (6X, 6C, 12X, 12C, 30X, or 30C) should be used. In addition, instructions for use are usually printed on the label.

Many homeopathic physicians suggest that remedies be used as follows: Take one dose and wait for a response. If improvement is seen, continue to wait and let the remedy work. If improvement lags significantly or has clearly stopped, another dose may be taken. The frequency of dosage varies with the condition and the individual. Sometimes a dose may be required several times an hour; other times a dose may be indicated several times a day; and in some situations, one dose per day (or less) can be sufficient.

If no response is seen within a reasonable amount of time, select a different remedy.

shes already very active and does the eliptical, some light lifting, and stretching almost every day.

she has 5 lb weights, and i got her 8 lb weights, light, and medium bands today, and im going to work on her diet with her to make sure shes getting propper nutrition

im lookin for the specifics that i can do to help her

like how much protein per BW she should get (i heard too much protein leaches calcium so i dont want to hurt her by having her OD on protein).

and quantities, frequency of supplamentation for vitamin D and magnesium and calcium and such.

i know lifting increases bone density but for someone with osteo is it already too late to help? or is a little bit of light very high rep resistance training beneficial?

thanks so much for the response

thanks so much.

needto and t-bell, would u mind linking your sources?

id like to avoid linking my mom to a website i get juice advice from (lolol), but i think having her read it herself would help to empower her greatly, as she is feeling a bit helpless right now

If your mom is physically fit I don't see any reason why she couldn't increase her activity to light strength training! Many 50+ year old women I know do not do anything and for them to go into a gym and try maxing weights on muscles.... that's when you start hurting those fragile joints... especially knees, elbows ankles and hips! I don't know how much protein she should be taking and there is strong evidence that high protein diets (and alcohol abuse) are links to osteoporosis... this has not been proven.
