I'm sure you've seen this guy... the guy who lowers the bar barely half way??? Well, this guy did that on bench... then moved on to dumbbells....

This SERIOUSLY almost made me miss my 30 second mark on the WS... he had the 90's and went... seriously... 2 INCHES down... I first thought "static???" -- but he did like 8 of them... I was confused, and perplexed... after my WS he had already left the gym.. so I couldn't ask him what he was doing... ahh well... all in a night.

His sticking point might be 8 inchs from the top. and might be trying to overload the triceps/top half of the movement

or he has been told that full range in the bench press will ruin your shoulders

Not sure he was trying to attempt this... they were dumbbells and they barely moved... I was SERIOUSLY curious as to what he was doing... I don't think it could have isolated much of anything, except his movement...

I have seen tooo many guys in my gym that are overloading their triceps then on bench. They down until what i call "the sticking point" (the point where it is REALLY hard to get it back up once you past)... and they do half benches... and have partners... and then move on to incline... and do the same...

so you might be right... but then what are these guys doing for chest??? :)

The guy do night displayed the limited motion on Flat bench, Flat dumbbell and incline... but like I said, before i could talk to him, he was gone....

hey citrus:

peter cisco and john little are the authors of the Static Contraction book and training method. Before that book they wrote a book outlining the method they created called Power Factor. Same thing, just moving the weight in a 1 - 3 inch rom.

just fyi.

you only reswt 30 sec, i ususally rest 45 ? why only 30 ?

I did 45 on some of them last week... I don't know? I feel ALOT more comfortable with 30... maybe I'm breaking "rules" but I felt it more and felt more into the workout with 30...

yeah... I understand that... is it more for advanced lifters or not? This guy went about half way down on the barbell bench and barbell incline, then moved the 90lb dumbells about ... shit... probably a few inches???

PERSONALLY, I thought he was doing the typical "no range" of motion workout I see EVERYONE else doing there... but I could have been wrong... from his physique, however, I didn't get the idea he was an avid trainer...

no the static contraction and power factor experiments were tried out on both newbies and veterans. heck some test where even done on female recreations golfers who didnt train at all.

its for everybody, but advanced athletes will get the most out of it.

like for example i have a max squat of 435. but i have power factor repped out 10 reps for 4 inches with 700lbs. so it about killed me. but i dont train like that for long, only when i plateau.

I find the 'static squatter' (as you described it) much more prevalent then the bencher.

C,

Make sue you remember his face and ask himn again te nest time you see him. I am wondering about the respinse. Maybe it is something we don't know about yet. Or he might be a foolish man.

Exodus, I use pft and static contraction off and on, honestly they are extremely effective. I find it amazing that most serious trainers are unfamiliar with them, or the one's that are totally discredit them, due to lack of understanding of muscle contraction. I generate impressive power factors when using pft (actually I'm doing it right now), my leg press today was a little over 103,000 ibs/min. It would be higher if my gym had a leg press slide that could hold more than 1500 ibs.
