ok i did calf raises on a step at the smith machine tonight.... that is a great thing...

but my arches start to ache/cramp... it sucks. i have to stop on account of my arches... wtf? i feel like a damn gimp! ;)

Do you have high arches? If so, you need to make sure you have enough arch support. I get aches in certain kinds of sneakers.

PS: Do you have the whole gimp-style leather suit?

Zed: Bring out the Gimp.
Maynard: But the Gimp's sleeping.
Zed: Well, I guess you better go and wake him up then.

why yes, this is my gym outfit (you don't think it's too much do you?):

actually, i don't have high arches... so i'm thinking i must have weak arches...? not sure... but this is lame.

Nice! But it's kinda baggy. Are you saving room for when you bulk up? And I think you might want to rethink the hat.

How about something like this?

Seriously, I don't know about the weak arches thing, though. I've always been a distance runner, so mine got pretty strong. You might just have to amke sure to stretch out well and just build up gradually. Seems like Spatts is the leg/butt lady -- I think she was a sprinter -- she might have some ideas, since she has a more formal track and field background.

The sitting calf raise machine seems to be nicer to my calves/knees than the standing one.

If your gym has both, give it a try.

I'm w/ya' on this one, smalls....
My arches KILL me when I'm doing calf raises of any sort...
I always stop because of my arches hurting before my calves are maxed...very frustrating..

My arches do that too on calf exercises where my leg is straight - hurts like the dickens. No problems w/ seated. They're a lot better with higher weight and lower reps, which actually resulted in some calf growth! :D If I'm doing high reps though and they start to hurt, I'll pause and stretch them a few seconds and start back up.
