Must someone really get fat in order to bulk?

Do you really have to get fat to bulk up? I see guys with tons of fat, I doubt you need that much. Maybe 10 to 15 lbs. What do you think?

I'm curious about this myself... I've got some decent size... but I have a bigger frame and can get about 20-25 more lbs before I start looking the size I want to (if that is possible)... Do I need to eat the house? :)

If your eating the right 'clean' foods (no junk) and working your ass off in the gym..like your supposed to, a bulking diet will not make you fat, it will eventually bring your b/f% up a couple numbers but doing the above right will keep fat storage minimal.

nah not fat no where near, hes right bf% goes up a few but not much. People can't tell the difference really whether I'm near the end of bulking or cutting unless I have my shirt off since the only difference is 6 pack definition. anyway I cant stand to bulk up too much before I itch to cut down again its a disease that hinders my gains.

I think the reason people usually gain some fat when they're bulking is because they eat enough carbs and fat and protein to make absolutely sure that they've got enough for their muscles to grow. It's better for your body to have a surplus than a deficit....

.... also, when bulking people tend to eat sources of protein which have a lot of fat, like whole eggs and nuts.

You don't need to gain much fat at all, I don't think. But when people aren't too worried about it, they're not worried about junk food either. If you eat clean, but just a LOT of it, I don't think you'll gain too much fat.

I think a lot of guys use their "bulking" phase to rationalize a shitty diet. When you're bulking, yes, you will put on some fat. But not all that much if you do it correctly. The aim of bulking should be to add muscle size with as little additional fat as possible. You shouldn't think of it as, "yeah, my muscles will grow, but I'll be fat too." That only happens if you let it.
