anybody here have mono with enlarged spleen before? how much did it ruin your strength...Im considering risking death to get back to the fucking weights...

there is no such thing as karma: I never did anything bad enough to deserve this shit. not yet anyway.

sorry to hear about that mono -- I've had a sore throat for a little over 3 weeks now, and it's really pissing me off. I can only imagine what you're going through.

As far as the enlarged spleen goes... your spleen is in your upper left abdomen. The concern with mono is that external pressure on the enlarged spleen will cause it to rupture. While this is a very real danger for mono cases -- it is extremely rare. So, providing that you FEEL strong enough to hit the gym -- you can do it, with caution. Be aware of the symptoms of a ruptured/bleeding spleen though.

Pain in the left upper part of your abdomen (under the left chest), feeling lightheaded, feeling like your heart is beating fast and hard, bleeding more easily than usual and having trouble breathing.

If any of these symptoms occur, I would stop the workouts. I realize a lot of the symptoms are pretty much what it feels like after a heavy set -- so, I wouldn't go nearly as intense as normal.

Be cautious and patient. One of the things about mono is the weakness -- don't go all out in the gym.... just go to try to keep some strength.

A few more things
1. I am not a doctor. I just believe that most warnings doctors give dont' apply to powerlifters. Hahaha. So, lift at your own risk really.

2. It takes a strong blow to the chest to rupture your spleen. It happens most offen in car accidents. So -- you should be ok unless you actuall drop a dumbell/barbell on your chest.

3. Cause of death on a ruptured spleen is internal blood loss into the abdomen -- you don't really need your spleen that much on its own. So since you know it's a risk -- if it happens you can call for help right away, and get a transfusion and you'll be fine.

4. A ruptured spleen is usually surgically removed. The lifetime consequences of this is that you'll have a higher susceptibility to infectious diseases. So you're looking at a lifetime without a spleen if that barbell does slip.

Maybe you shouldn't do it. Hahaha. Hopefully somebody who's actually lifted thorugh mono will respond to help you out.

I had mono for 2 years!!! I nearly died a few times...mainly because I tried to push my body too soon. I had an enlarged speen AND liver...for a long time.

Change your life NOW!!!
Sleep 10 hours every night.
Eat GOOD foods always!!!
Rest...and do NOT lift if you don't feel 100%.

I think I migh have mono right now. Definitely isn't helping with my lifting. Ah well perhaps I should go to the doctor.

im dealing with the same situation rite now. Ive had mono for 3 weeks although i never had extreme symptoms like many people get i am still hesitant to getting back to lifting.
I definitly tested positive for mono and my liver counts were AST- 219 and ALT- 503 my tonsils were starting to almost touch each other and my doc gave me some prednisone yesterday which helped that a hell of a lot. But i was also wondering how soon i could go back to lifting. Its already been a month since i last picked up a weight and im starting to go crazy. Once my lymph node swelling goes completely down i was thinking about getting back into it slowly but c'mon man u dont really wanna risk rupturing ur spleen. all u need is to bring the bar down wrong or have a shirt blow out on ya and u might be in some deep shit.

Agreed. I had mono back in college for three weeks. I had a 105 fever, glands on my neck swollen like golfballs, I could barely get out of bed just to eat and go to the bathroom. I was horrible. I couldn't imagine having it for two months let alone two years. Don't lift until you are better. Mono is serious, it's not like a cold or the flu or something. I can't imagine work out while having it.
