Mercury In Tuna

Tom Treutlein

I like to use tuna as my main source of protein. I heard about the supposed high mercury content, and checked a few articles. From what I've heard, you're not at risk from the canned tuna, due to the fact that it's made from younger fish who haven't had as much time to absorb the mercury through their gills and into their body.

Now, this is talking about one can. I plan on consuming 40 cans a week (5 a day) on average. Does anyone have any further information on the depths of mercury poisoning, or the risks of consuming this much tuna? Will one obtain mercury poisoning from eating this much? Does anyone else out there eat this much tuna?

You can get high levels of mercury from tuna. I would limit myself to 2 cans a day. Why are you eating tuna as a primary protien source? Its extremely high in sodium as well.

The main problem is from the bigger, predatory fish (i.e. albacore). I have a TON of links at home and will paste them tonight...

There was a new Stamford study in Men's Health that stated that the mercury wasn't as bad as originally thought. Needless to say, it's still a long-term problem and eating 5 cans daily is excessive...Look into other fish, chicken breast, steak, etc

5 cans a day !?:alien:

apart from the mercury issue (which is a real concern) , aren't you fed up with tuna ?

@ 1-2 cans a day weeks after weeks, eating tuna starts to become
and I have to stop for a few days

The article I read recommended no more than 2 cans of tuna per week. It also said that canned tuna is at risk due to more than 1 type of tuna being put into the canned tuna so there could be mercury in the tuna.

I'll bump my fish hit list post for the types of fish to avoid, etc.

You're not at risk for mercury poisoning tomorrow, but mercury does not work in poisoning you right away - it's a long process. In your case a few cans per day will not kill you, but 5 cans a day for 20 years might cause harm. Usually the time frequency of exposure to mercury is the biggest issue - for it needs time to clear.

Will drinking excess water help to flush out any excess mercury? Or how long of a break would I need for it to clear from my system?

Tuna is a quick, cheap, easy source of protein. Thusly, it has become my main provider.
