I would say the majority of British of men of my generation cry very rarely - I'm not saying that's a good thing.
In my case - from a very young age I (and other boys I was at primary school with) were repeatedly told by teachers that "boys must never cry" and we were made to feel very embarrassed about it if we did, especially in front of others. I think lots of teachers shared this attitude about (boys) crying at the time.
I don't think I've shed a tear in approx 15 years unless something's poked me in the eye that doesn't mean I don't feel sad or low I've just been conditioned not to express those feelings in that way.
