What is there to discuss?

No more offensive than a moderator's handle telling us to fuck off / take it in the ass in Italian.

Devil's Advocate +1

but that moderater, whoever he is  is telling everyone that. now if his handle said "fuck off negros" that would be different. and about exactly comparable.

so I can put you in the "no problem" column I guess

Is that what it says?

maybe he loves the south. maybe john c. calhoun was really proficient at reacharounds, and that's what this member is all about.

i personally hope he has a little hate for jnevin, though.

cept that avatar is the very symbol of racism and slavery to blacks as I understand it.

If I have that part wrong, which I dont think i do, then sure.

if someone made a username "Hitler" with a swastika avatar, what would be your opinion?

or here, ur Irish - an avatar with a potatoe and a line going tru it. what then lol

If someone made a username

That flag isn't a symbol of racism, it's part of the south's history. Some people take it seriously. Not all wish slayery was still in existence. It's part of American culture, like it or not. The name... whatever. Right up there with the eyetalian assfuck handle. If people don't like it, they can put him on ignore.

the avatar is offensive imo, the username just clarifies exactly what the member means the avatar to symbolize

How is the flag offensive? It's on toys that are sold all over (General Lee) and is part of a number of southern states' flags.

A Confederate flag is only offensive if the extent of your civil war knowledge is what you were taught in third grade.

There is absolutely nothing hosted on the internet that I can take offence to or feel outraged about because it is strangers interacting via an anonymous medium - it carries no weight. I do possess empathy and know if something's in "bad taste" but it'll never bother me to the point where I'd petition a forum admin or website host ISP to take action.

If the person's handle was "Ihaten*****s* and he had a public lynching avatar to boot then obviously I'd understand why said person was banned because if he was not, then the website / forum would be passively condoning racism, complaints would flood the ISP and you'd be shut down.

make your own thread re those issues. what does that have to do with this.

fuktard? run out of substance to respond with ?

try disagreeing without being disagreeable.

same issue...its pathetic

where is your post defending others?

In addition, I think all serious attacks on people because of their race, religion, or sexual preference is offensive and pathetic...

The only thing that is worse are those that defend one and allow another, it shows a total lack of integrity.

one by one all of those are being contested or removed for exactly the reason I'm talking about. its still out there tho ur right

whats your opinion on THIS issue. And try attacking the opinion and not the presenter of the opinion

You ignored my post above, I stated my position...

"I think all serious attacks on people because of their race, religion, or sexual preference is offensive and pathetic...

Funny you don't seem to support my position.

Do you support anti-Christian threads?

Basically, people see what they want to when they look at it. A lot of southerners look at it with pride because they associate it with the south's rebellion against the north's political dominance. It seems people with more liberal views want to see it as a racist symbol. Lincoln didn't start the war to end slavery, only the spread of it. The south rebelled because they felt their rights were at stake. Granted, the right to own slaves isn't exactly the most noble thing to base a war on, but at the time it was normal and was how their lives and businesses were structured.

I agree with the bolded part.

who is defending one and allowing another? its not analogous.

one is a discussion thread with debate on all sides, one is an avatar offending with every post.

the equivilent would be a username "God Sucks" with a Piss-christ avatar. and yes, I would find that offensive (even tho I'm not religious ).

While we're at it, can I petition admin to remove the Irish tricolour from peoples' profiles as well as many in the UK deem this to be a symbol of Republican terrorism and as such people sporting said symbol as condoning IRA terrorism / bombings against mainland UK.

just a clarification - I wouldnt find the piss-christ avatar "offensive", but "objectionable" for the same reason - that it would be offensive to so many others who are on the board.

still on the same side?

Yes, I find people who have to tear down others because they are a different race/ethnicity, practice a different religion, or don't agree with their sexuality to be sad and pathetic individuals.

There's a book that I can't remember the name of and my old friend who went to Howard University which is a historic black university even studied this guy.

A black man marched around the south holding a confederate flag because he supported what the South's succession was really about.

There were many and I mean MANY blacks who voluntarily joined the confederacy because they disagreed with the federal government becoming so powerful.

The real reason the south succeeded was because they were in favor of states rights just as the forefathers of this country were.

It wasn't about slavery until Lincoln and his staff realized that the North was not behind the war. there were riots in NY because of the draft because most disagreed with the war.

You need to pick up a history book that hasn't been tainted by the federal government. The shit they teach you in High school is flt wrong

Jefferson Davis the prez of the confederacy wife was from Jersey
she's buried in town

I believe he was proud that many Blacks fought and died under the confederate flag, not sure that is a good reason - but that was his position.

IMO that was 200 years ago. Heck, we have a racist black man running for president now and the nation loves it. We have local black power crazies organizing voter drives getting illegal signed up to vote and people who complain are called racists.

This country is a shit hole.

all i wanna know is why it's okay for AAP to say outrageous things about jesus and christianity but a measly confederate flag is so controversial?
mind you, i don't want AAP censured in anyway, but it's such a flagrant double standard.
look at AAP's sig for christsake, yet we're supposed to feel bad about a confederate flag, wtf mava

There are many stereotypes and messed up things said in C&C. Like how many threads take a poke at Muslims? I'm Muslim and it annoys me. Many threads take a poke at Christians too. I think everyone should respect everyone else and only go so far. A confederate flag is really not worth getting hassled over, especially when I see a thread about "Muslim" being stereotypes as suicide bombers.

Not offensive to me at all. I see it as Southern Pride not a racist flag. Strange how the confederate flag is racist but a black panther flag isn't?

"Sorry I ruined your black panther party".

Xenophobia is a fear or contempt of that which is foreign or unknown, especially of strangers or foreign people.[1] It comes from the Greek words ξένος (xenos), meaning "foreigner," "stranger," and φόβος (phobos), meaning "fear." The term is typically used to describe fear or dislike of foreigners or in general of people different from oneself.

Additionally, in the science fiction genre, xenophobia may refer to a fear or hatred of extraterrestrial cultures or beings.

Yeah a few years back I worked with a guy that was hardcore southern pride and he had a big rebel flag tattoo on his shoulder and arm. I'm from the south but he was a racist to any MALE not white. He of course loved all women so he was just ignorant. So one day I realized I never asked him where he was "borned and raised". He was always asking me questions about back home but he had never answered my question. So I pressed him and come to find out the yankee was from frigin WISCONSIN. He got REALLY mad when I couldn't stop laughing, and I thought he was gonna hit me when I started making cheese jokes. Frigin wannabe.

And FYI for those of you that think the KKK and the rebel flag mean racism, here is a little history lesson for you. The American flag (stars and stripes) was used in klan rallies and marches LONG before the stars and bars were.

And for those of you that THINK you are educated on the history of the confederate flag, take a little read on this page. It will at least educate you IF you are open minded enough to read it.

I know your post is facetious in context, but orange does represent the loyalist sympathies, while green, the republican. White is considered the hopeful reconciliation between the two.

"William won the Battle of the Boyne and James retreated to Dublin saying that he would never lead an Irish army again. He fled to France but his troops continued to fight Williams. The war finally ended at the Battle of Aughrim in 1691. Penal laws were subsequently imposed upon the Irish Catholics as a result, despite Williams’ wishes for tolerance. The Battle of the Boyne was significant because it cemented the Protestant cause in Ireland, tied England to the country and resulted in persecution against the native Irish Catholics (despite Williams protests).

In conclusion, William of Orange’s reign impacted greatly on the subsequent English monarchy. His legacy of tolerance was however not heeded – Catholics continued to be persecuted. His victories in Ireland prevented France’s ambition for European domination and Williams’ victory at the Battle of the Boyne is still celebrated by Protestants and Orangemen in Ulster and Scotland annually on the 12th July."

This is absolutely correct. Another factor was the agrarian south was diverging from the industrializing north. Oil and water there, and they didn't mix. Even their railroad tracks were incompatible. So if you can't trade, have societies based on different values, and a large federal government being imposed by the north wants to take over and set the agenda for the entire nation, what else would you expect? The issue of slavery was probably #3 or #4 on the list of reasons for the civil war -- at best.
