erik, to respond to your thread title first, I am curious about how you intend to find your sticking point. I will tell you what works for me...board presses, and raw maxes. Getting under the heaviest weight possible and having it pulled out from under your strain is a sure fire way of telling where you freeze. It's not the safest way though. A progression of 1RM moves from floor press, 2 board, 3 board, 4 board, 5 board, and rack lokouts will tell you, based on speed and strength (numbers), where your sticking point is. From that point, you can determine your weakness. For example, my floor press is around 190 pounds and my 4 inch lock outs are around 403 pounds (well at least 3 months ago they were...might be higher now). I find that I strain the most on 3 board. It seems to pause right at the point where I feel like I can't generate speed or leverage to move the bar. My floor press, 3 board, and lockout numbers indicate to me that my shoulders, and possibly lats, are weaker than my triceps. Keep in mind when I'm saying this that I bench low, isolating my chest very little.
As for DB press, I never max on that, so I can't really comment. Other factors, such as stroke, grip, and width play a part in comparing the two though.
