Lifting and hormone levels...?

i had a simple question to ask but one that ive been curious about for some time....Do you all know if the act of lifting weights raise or lower testosterone levels? How does lifting by itself affect your hormones???

i do not know the exact mechanism by which lifting increases hormone levels but i do know for certain that it does, espcially the harder lifts that require more muscles to complete the exercise. i do remember though that resting less in between exercises and/or sets increases lactic acid production which ive read has a direct relationship with increasing growth hormone levels so that one i know. exercises such as the squat and deadlift or some of the weightlifting movements such as the clean and jerk for example which recruit more muscle fibers have been shown to have a positive effect on the anabolic hormones throuhgout the body. depending on the individual though, it is also said that working out too much has a negative effect on your anabolic hormone levels. they say test and gh levels peak within 60-90 minutes of a workout and fall after by then which the catabolic hormone cortisol takes over. again everyone is different in this by way of genetics and certain other things like if taking anabolic steroids which changes everything greatly. i hope this helped some. ;)

I have nothing to back it up, but muscle stimulation does increase natural testosterone. Squats, because of the amount of muscles that are stimulated - cause the biggest spike in testosterone.

Squats and Deadlifts.......for Anabolic Hormones :bawling: ya i know they hurt

I knew I had a book around here somewhere that covered this. I found it and it says this. First of all, it is a widely held misconception that exercise increases testosterone levels. In fact, prolonged exercise decreases the production of testoterone by approximately 10%. Many studies have reported post-exercise increases in serum test levels, however, what they're mearuring is only temporary false elavations. This is because exercise causes significant decreases in plasma volume, and the metabolic clearance rate of testoterone.
