What would you choose?

Life in the mob or being the average John Doe?

1.) Choose life in the mob and you will be living the life of the elite. You will be making $1billion/year. You will be indulging in all of the luxuries in life. You will have a beautiful wife, lots of beautiful children, a dozen mansions all over the world. Fancy cars. Private planes. Luxury yachts. You will get the chance to visit every country in the world. You will have lots of friends in high places.

All of your future generations wil be provided for. They will never have to work a day in their life.

The cons are:
a.) You will have to work 10 hours per day 7 days per week.
b.) You might go to jail for a total of 10 years during your lifetime.
c.) Your money will make you a target for kidnappers, extortionists, blackmailers, and the IRS.

2.) Choose life as John Doe, and you will be living the life of the average citizien. You will be making $100,000/year. You will have an average wife, with 1 or 2 kids. You will live in a medium sized house in a middle class neighborhood. You will only work 40 hours per week. You will never have to worry about getting arrested or going to jail. You will never become the target of kidnappers, extortionists, blackmailers, and the IRS. You will drive a $45,000 leased car.

The cons are:
a.) You will always be worried about paying your bills.
b.) You won't live in a fancy house.
c.) You won't drive exotic cars
d.) You won't have a private plane or luxury yacht
e.) Your kids will wind up taking loans for college for which they will have to pay off for the rest of their life.
d.) You won't provide your kids with a big inheritance
e.) You won't indulge yourself in the luxuries of the rich & famous
f.) Chances are money problems will lead to a divorce with your wife, she will grab everything, and you will be left with nothing.
g.) You will have a mortgage which you will be paying off for a large part of your life.
e.) When you retire, you will be living in a retirement home.

Which life would you choose?

id be a mob giant or drug lord any day of the week. fact is it aint that simple. theres loads of criminals out there and theyd all want that. you need to be good, and patient.

It is a real tough decision to make. I have been thinking about it for the past 12 months. I don't have any kids yet, I am not even married. But that's my main concern. I would like to be able to provide for them, and the future generations. And also live life to the fullest. After all you have only one life, and you owe it to yourself to enjoy it to the max and accomplish as much as you can. After that, when you go 6ft under, what will follow will be an eternity of darkness. By then it will be too late to make changes.

And the only thing that will bring you satisfaction is that you have provided a worry-free and sin-free life of luxury for your kids, and their kids for generations to come.

Come to think of it. After EXTENSIVE thinking which has taken me over 12 months, I have decided. Life in the mob.

You have one life. One chance. Make it happen!

listen: you cant just make a bunkload of money in organised crime like that. its hard and takes luck patience hard work etc just like in the "mainstream" business world. except theres another factor on of not getting your ass caught

If you noticed, you will have to work about 70 hours/week to make it happen. If you do that conscientiously it will happen, no doubt about it. Just be careful what you wish for. :)

So many assumptions, so few of them correct.

The vast majority of mobsters do not live in the fashion you've described. Like all businesses, only the guys at the top of the "organization" live really well. There are relatively few of those top spots.

The average citizen does not live life as you've described for John Doe. A 40 hour work week for $100k ain't too shabby.

But all this comes from a kid whose parents cut him a check for $30 large at the beginning of each school year.

(My edit in red ... I left it out in the original post.)

Hey Rock why dont you set us straight on the mob then? Tell us whats it like? Tell me how many families are in the U.S? Tell me how they make there money? Give me facts none of this shit you watch on t.v. or read in f.b.i files. Please set us straight! $30 large, Thats funny!

Read Donnie Brasco. Written by Agent Joe Pistone, the man who infiltrated the Mafia deeper than anyone had ever done before.

The word you've overlooked here is "relatively." When looking at the Fortune 500, the US biggest companies, you will see that there are relatively few people who hold the positions of CEO, VP, COO, etc., compared to the overall number of people who work at the company. Take Microsoft, for instance. There are 25,000 people employed by MS. Do they all live as well as Bill Gates? No. Same thing with organized crime. The life of a rank and file mobster does not compare to the life of the head of the organization.

Look at football. There are 32 teams, but there can only be one starting quarterback per team (let's call this guy the CEO or the "Don" of the team). Makes for relatively few starting quarterback jobs. If you add 1000 more teams there are still relatively few starting quarterback jobs.

It sounds like you are just book smart my friend, and that is great you will get far in the corporate world, but you and I both know book smart and street smart are two different worlds! So get that suit ready for wallstreet!

I think I saw a point in here somewhere. Hmph. I must be mistaken. Perhaps you should read my first post again. (Try trailing the words with your fingers and sounding them out slowly.)

And the part about $30 grand ... the guy who started the thread is a student whose parents write him a check for $30,000 each year for school. I was commenting on the ... never mind.

Let me put it simple to you book worm, I dont give a shit what books you read bookworm, dont you have to go study now? Shit your not even from the U.S go talk to your own people, book worm!

Hey Rockafaggot,Thanks for pointing out there is only one starting Quarterback per team! Go read or something bookworm!

Ow. Book worm. That stings. Take it back!

If I am, in fact, from another country, as you seem to believe, it is sad that I have a far better command of your native tongue than you. Both written and spoken. That you're missing the little things like, idiom and colloquialism, is just funny.

The point is that you will sacrifice your life. You will get rewarded for it materialistically, and your kids won't have to sacrifice their lives!

Rockafaggot, You may have the school smarts with your big words, But I can really tell you have no street smarts my friend!

Like the example you gave there in the corporate world,
Please tell us all how much an average made guy would bring home a year? Please also tell me How many made men there are in the Gambino Family? We will see if your book worm skills help you on these?

I didn't say how much the average guy in the corporate world made, but I'll play. Although I'm still searching for your point, I don't think there is any way of knowing how much the average made guy brings home per year (In the same way no one knows "how much the average guy in the corporate world brings home." We can draw conclusions based on some collected data, but it won't be a real average. If you know anything about sampling you'll understand.) Because the Mafia is a secret society, they don't send out many quarterly reports. The scenario put forth by our thread host incluced such niceties as a private plane, $1 billion and a great big house like Tony Soprano. The men who hold that status are not the average made guy. In any case the money that's taken in from graft (typically handled by the average made guy) -- as well as gambling (the bread and butter of the organization abd run by more senior members) -- isn't all take. He has to give a taste up the chain and that person does the same and so on. Even what is left over is typically used to set up other scores, for pay offs, for drug buys, for lawyer retainers and so forth. A guy who runs a book may take in $100k a week, but it doesn't belong to him alone. If he's skimming or doing side scores, that's a different matter altogether. But he had better sleep with one eye open.

As for determining the number of made men in the mob there are ... this from Pistone's testimony:

The families are broken down into small, separate cells, commonly called crews. ... In all likelihood, a member of one crew may not even know who are the members of another crew in his own family.

So if people on the inside don't even know a number, how could anyone on the outside know?

I'm sorry. Did I make you feel small? Or did that happen all on its own?

But ... if it makes you feel better, I didn't fall off a turnip truck two days ago. Being well spoken and valuing learning doesn't indicate anything other than being well spoken and valuing learning. Bill Bonano, who succeeded his father as the head of his Family, was college educated. I've seen interviews and you would never know what his line of work was. He was just so well spoken, what with all the school smarts.

And lastly ... "Rockafaggot"??!! That's the best you can do? I figured a former Navy SEAL would be more cunning. Ooops ... was that word too big? Golly, it's hard to dumb things down.

Hey Rock, Like I said you are a bookworm! You are smart by only what you read my friend. As far as the seal thing goes, you would pass the written but other then that your bookworm skills would not help you! Please tell me what you have done in your life? Also I dont care how fast you can run so forget that, I'm sure you needed to be fast with your mouth! Also do you think I care that your smarter school wise? One more thing do you think you could make the seals? I will tell you right now with your attitude they wouldnt piss on you if you were on fire!

As far as you know I am a college professor. As far as you know I control the heroin traffic in the Pacific Northwest. As far as you know I am a Secret Service agent. As far as you know I am in prison for murder.

I find it difficult to believe that such an elite group would have selected such a magnificent dolt.
