"lean mass"

I'm 20 years old, 5"7, and 140lbs. Now, this probably makes you think I'm like a rake or something, but that's not the case. I would consider myself to be a bit podgy (and my friends agree, so it's not in my head). I never hear about anybody my height weighing as little as me on here. What's wrong with my body? I didn't exercise much as a kid, I tended to stay indoors. My theory is that whilst everybody else my age was out there building muscle naturally, I was sitting inside kinda rotting. What's everybody's opinions on this?

dunnp mabe, I was 6"3 and only 164ibs before I started lifting.

I'm still light (185) compared to my friends even though there not fat and don't carry much muscle. Some people just have naturally light frames.

I remember once being about 165 and people thought I was 180. It was the combination of eating a good diet that helped me to be pumped during workouts and having at least some fat, adding to my physical volume. The fat could not be noticed through a shirt.

Your weight would be considered healthy for a female of your height and weight. Since you're concerned about being underweight, can I assume that you're a male??? If this is the case, then the answer is obvious. You have very little lean mass compared to many other males your age. However, to call your condition "rotting" is belittling to all those females who were very active in thier youth but still have a relatively high %bodyfat and low lean mass!

Dude you are perfect build for a cyclist, triathlete, or runner!! Last time I checked Lance Armsrong and Spencer Smith were bad asses!!

I'm 6'1 160 and all muscle baby!!!

Just get real ripped like no fat and everyone will think you are a bad ass. Works for me.

Seriously 5' 7" and 140 is not really little. You have plenty to work with. Just don't keep sitting inside rotting.

lungofiron.

brothaman, glad you brought this up, i thought i was the only one on this board who was this size. I'm a 5'8" male and i weigh 140 lbs also. just got pinched today and i'm sitting at 10.6% Body fat. (down from 16.6% at 158lbs back in february) while i am not big by any means i do consider myself pretty muscular for my weight. seriously i'd rather be a lower weight and have less body fat. the difference here is that i think i am shaped more like an athlete (as mentioned in above post) than a bodybuilder.

ENOCK, how long have you been lifting for? I'm currently at around 145 and have only been lifting seriously for about 5 weeks, but would reaaly like to get my weight up to around 180 like you. Any suggestions?

eat alot of clean foods and train and you will put on some good muscle... search for some bulking threads...

you will be fine - new trainees tend to put on mass quick, eat and train smart - stay positive and you will grow!!!!

I have the opposite problem. I currently weigh around 210 at 6' and people often guess that I weigh around 180. I've always tended to hide my weight, even when I was up to 248 and fat. I have a long torso and long arms, much like Arnold's skeletal makeup so it sort of makes me look thinner. While it helps to make me look leaner when I'm not, it sucks for trying to look big and muscular. My arms are over 16" though people with much smaller arms that are shorter tend to look bigger than mine. I think part of that is my own perception as I am usually referred to as "big guy" at work and sometimes I get comments about my "guns", though I guess a 16-17" arm to an average person is huge. When you hang out on internet boards where everyone is claiming 19-20" guns I guess you get sort of jaded.
