Ketogenic Diet + Protein shakes = Waste of time?

I lost 4 stone with the atkins diet and hit a plateau. Although I am now on a Clen/T3 cycle I am starting to think that the protein shakes I was having my of helped to halt the weight loss. (I started the shakes to try and reduce the amount of meat I was eating)

I made sure I used sugar/carb free protein powder and only mixed it with water, not milk. I was having 2-4 shakes a day (30grams protein per shake).

I came to the conclusion that it slowed weight loss because denatured weigh will get processed by the liver pretty much straight away and if the energy levels are low it will look at the whey as an energy source, stopping the fat burn - possibly taking me out of ketosis.

Does this sound feasable or am I talking tosh?

Hello by the way :D

That's almost certainly what was happening. There was an excellent thread a while back regarding too much protein on keto diets and the way protein would be used for energy therby interrupting ketosis. You'll have to search for it, though.

Yes, you're absolutely correct. Intake of protein over the base line levels needed or proposed in my manual, is going to (for the most part) throw you our of ketosis or, as you already pointed out, use the protein for energy. Either way it's a bad situation...protein is a very inefficient source of fuel; thus, the tired, sluggish feeling is due to it....

solution: decrease protein intake - especially whey protein

Bugger, that was a waste of money.

Thanks for confirming that for me, so I should go back to the meat then as it takes longer to digest?

Meat is easier to go w/...just add some fiber and you're set.

Mr X is correct too much protien will put you out of ketosis. Also bear in mind that while fat does not have a glycemic index, both carbs & protien do. Compaired to other protiens whey has a much higher gi. Gram for gram, whey protien will induce a greater insulin response and a faster rise in blood sugar than say beef or egg protien. I would limit it to post workout, and even then you may wish to slow down the absorbtion by mixing with some flax or olive oil and some kind of fiber. As a general rule, in any given meal make sure your fat grams are = to or higher than your protien grams if you wish to maintain a state of ketosis.

with the weather getting warmer (useing the outdoor grill) my post workout shakes have to turned into steaks
