But i noticed that arnold and the rest of the guys lift weights ver fast ,i take my time lifting the weights ,should i up the speed when lifting

can anyone answer me why they lift the weights so fast

dont watch Pumping Iron and try to train like those guys. Get inspiration from it and hit the gym and load some iron! :)

Pumping iron is an awesome flick.

But you have to remember that it was shot back in the 70's. They were pioneers, learning as they went along and didn't have the vast scientific data available that we do today.

For example, they trained alot more then was necessary. Arnold used to train twice a day for up to 6 days a week. He spent countless hours in the gym each day. Even he acknowledges that it was too much, but he didn't know any better back then.

Although, those guys must have built tremendous stamina. I feel like puking just thinking about doing their workouts.

They do train fast, but they trai n under control. Most slow training is bogus. You should train fast if you are advanced but notice that Arnold, Louie, France and the rest of them are doing the training under control and they arent cheating or bouncing the weights around..Most of the best lifters train fast but under control..That slow stuff just makes you sore.

Lou ferrigno has horrible form in that video.

BTW, Pumping iron was staged.

i thought you train fast to get fast twitch muscles instead of slow twitch (i.e. being 'explosive')

What horrible form? Do you mean the military presses? Sure he trained fast but his reps were under control and judging by the size of his giant delts, he knew his shit..BTW Louie knew how to train, just look at how big he is, he is an animal unleashed, do animals go slow or do they attack the weight and scream?? Dont buy into this modern day bullshit about slow tempos and such, if you can do the reps the right way then go at your pace.

Look at Louie! he was the biggest bodybuilder ever in his time! Then tell me he trained the wrong way!!

combination

The point is this; you attack the weight under control and then when going to attack the weight again you retract slowly so that you can perform a percisioned attack controlled and explosive.

The point is explode with force and control but retract slowly causing tension on the muscle at all times(this is where you grow.)

Or just do it your way....

jus' tellin it like it is...

His form was horrible. He didn;t even performed full ROM. Not only speed but he was all over the place with the weights.

Drugs are the reason that he got so big.

Bullshit it was the drugs that got Louie so big.A lot of people are jealous of the top people and they make up excuses like drugs and such to make them feel better and less guilty about not accomplishing what they want to be. Louie was big from his early pictures beofre he was taking drugs. his form wasnt horrible.

I think that you might be the kind of person who does those Muscle and Fitness 3 sets of 10 routines for years and wonders why he never grows..by the way i have a 400plus bench press and I train with fast reps..Try this, find the strongest people around and watch how they train. They all train with SPEED in their reps

The only time that the strongest train slow is on a very heavy weight for low reps cause they cant move the weight fast cause its so heavy...Dont bash Louie, obviously his training worked well for him, so did Arnolds.

Yes, i follow M&F's routines for inches on your biceps in 4 weeks.

Boy you know me too well.

One more thing, do you really think he would have gotten anywhere near 270lbs without drugs?

BTW, nice bench. I lift 401lbs :)

:) I think Louie would have still been really big without drugs, bnut all the top bodybuilders in the 1970s were taking something so its tough to measure Lou up next to the others. Near 270 yes but not as muscular. Good bench, if you want to join the conversation on the powerlifting forum and add pounds and pounds to your bench fasr then come on over and we can help. JOIN US!

I have known hundreds of guys that use drugs and none of them look like Lou. If it were just the drugs then half this forum would be in the Mr. Olympia.

Speed of the reps are important, but no one really seems to pay much attention to it. Example: Take one guy doing bent rows like he is trying to start a lawn mower, he'll be lifting for 15 seconds. Then take a guy who lowers for 3 seconds, pauses for 1, raises 2, he's lifting for twice as long. There is going to be a different training effect. It's just another training parameter like reps, sets, rest period, etc.

I agree, drugs are a tool to help you become a monster, but they make you a freak if you don't have the genetics to be one, as well as if your training sucks. My gym is full of guys that have been juicing for years and they all look like shit as their training sucks
