well i have been out of shape for years and have never been a runner. but now i have started to run and my left knee is starting to hurt me is this something i should be worried about?

hell ya there is something to worry about. Have you ever had knee problems? Have you ever had it looked at by a physician? If you internally hurt your knee you might have to forget about running for a long time. Go see a doctor and have them do some scans and test and see if there maybe is something really wrong with your knee. Even if it all checks out fine I would stick to a Eliptical Machine or a bike until it is used to stress situations.

Yea, if you are running 7 days a week, you are bound to have some pain... those muscles have to rest man... they need to rebuild. Are you running outside, or on a treadmill??? If treadmill, are the clutches on it going out. This can cause all sorts of knee trouble.

Yeah get it checked out and or just take a break from ALL impact exercises. Stick to a stationary bike (or regular bike outside) for awhile... and after that to avoid injury I'd move to the Eliptical.

A lot of times when you don't work out for great periods of time the muscle weakens and almost deteriorates near the joints. Also, your tendons and ligaments are not used to high stress situations. you should break into running 1-3 days a week and do the elyptical, and stationary and outside bikes to rebuild and strengthen the muscle tissue as well as the ligaments and tendons. Also, look at taking a gluco supplement to aid in the process and promote speedy recovery.

How often do you run?

Are you running on flat ground? Track? Tread mill?

WHERE around the left knee? Can you describe the pain?

Any previous leg/knee injuries you think this could have aggravated?

If you are trying too much too soon, yes you are going to ache ...

There are alternatives if this problem persists, or something is wrong ...

Can you try and pinpoint the issue? Sartorius ? See link for quad & ham attachments from this link to better pinpoint 'what hurts' ... :)

I'd have it checked out; especially if there's swelling. This can lead to chronic knee problems if not treated correctly. Knee injuries can be the result of many things; previous trauma, osteoarthritis, patellar tendonitis, patellofemoral alignment problems, foot malignment, hip weakness....Strengthening the core muscles around the knees; hip, lower back, abdomen, quads is your overall best way to get rid of or prevent further knee trauma. If you're going to do cardio, stick to walking or the stationary bike if it doesn't bother you.
