Jumproping Question

Hi...I've been lurking on this site for almost 3 years now on and off...great site...great advice from you all. I just can't seem to keep the motivation it takes to get to where i want...but i'll just keep trying...
anyways...i have a question regarding jumproping for cardio. is it a good cardio choice? i have an elliptical/stepper machine and have gotten really bored with it...trying to find something new...my knees are bad so i can't really run a lot unless i have a really good brace. can you do...say HIIT with jumproping? and how would y'all suggest it? 30 sec. jump, 30 sec. rest? for how long should i be doing it?

one more question...as far as pre/post workout foods...what's the answer? i have gotten frustrated with searching on that topic...lol...yes, i have searched...i can usually find what i want with the search, just this one, i'm still dumbfounded...lol.
what should you eat after cardio? before and after weights and how long before/after should you be eating? what if i do weights late at night?

i would appreciate any answers y'all can give me to clear this up for me....:)

oh, and daisy...you are my inspiration...:) congrats on all your achievements...

thanks to all...

I find jumproping to be very strenuous. I jumprope between sets sometimes, usually just to a count of 100; that's enough.

In magazines I'll read things like, "jumprope for ten minutes". Uh, yeah! I don't think the authors have tried that lately! It will have you lying on the floor gasping for breath!

Sorry, not much of an answer to your question.

As for eating, you need to get some good protein and carbs into your body within 30-60 minutes of lifting. A protein shake with a banana mixed in works if you're on the run.

SURE you can do HIIT with a jump rope! Jumping rope is VERY hard! :)

I would find a track, park or walking trail. You'll also need a stopwatch or digital watch.

You can start by walking briskly for 5 min (carry the jumprope). Then stop and jumprope for 1 min. Walk briskly for 2 min. Stop, jumprope for 1 min. Keep repeating. The intervals should last 20 min. Then cooldown by walking for 5 min. The total workout time is 30 min.

Interval lengths can vary, but if you can jump rope for more than 2 min then you need to increase the work effort. You can do this by jumping faster, or getting a heavier jumprope.

Thanks guys...I did the intervals yesterday, just 30 s. jump, 30 s. walk...today, my calves are KILLING me...
feels good in a sick way...lol
what about the pre/post foods though? any thoughts on that?
much appreciated..:)

My experience w/ jumprope - I start thinking I'm a prize boxer when I finally got coordinated enough to do the speed rope LMAO! It's great interval training, coordination, etc. What I did find however was that I developed joint problems from the impact. Like the boxer training, you need to be light on your feet with it. I may not be light on my feet... Anyway I stopped.

is jumproping okay to do every cardio session i have? or do i need to mix it up...i just got so bored with the elliptical and the stepper.

Go with what your body & your attention span say. If you do only the rope for a long time you might get bored with it too. Given that it tends to be geared towards HIIT type training and the fact that it can be hard on the joints if you aren't light on your feet, I might suggest at least watching how you feel if you do only that several times / week for any duration of time. I'd probably just throw it into the mix as another cardio option.
