It's funny how the world views us Americans as dumbasses.

So, I was at work the other day and these two ladies (who turned out to be German) came in to develop pictures.

Anyway, they had pictures from what looks to be the Saharan desert; however, I wasn't sure what country it was from because the Saharan desert can be accessed from a few different countries.

So, they came in, picked up the pictures, and while they wre looking at them, I asked "What country are the pictures from?". One of the ladies said Morocco.

I said "Oh ok".

Then the other German lady mumbled something to her.

Then the lady asks me "You do know where that is right?" because my friend thought that it was pointless to tell you since you probably didn't have a clue where it was".

I laughed and said I knew where it was, and that in fact, it is primarily a Muslim nation.

One of the German chicks said "Im impressed".

We all had a laugh and made fun of stupid Americans together.

Anyway, its funny how the world thinks we are a bunch of morons(and they do have a point, since Im sure many Americans couldn't locate Morocco on a map).

Reminds me of my sister. Highly educated, holds 2 masters degrees but can't hold down a job. SHe lived in Morroco and had a gardener, maid. She still thinks she's too good to shave my back.
 
If you consider the quality of education and median iq of folks in this country as a whole .. they're right -- we *are* dumbasses.

But next time remind them -- that if you select distinct select areas of the country (new england, san francisco, seattle, etc.) and now compare the intellect and educational level of it's citizens...we BLOW them away!

These are also the bright geographic areas that are full of creative, intelligent minds who invent the technologies that those foreigners kiss our asses to purchase and adopt.

Just because we're a melting pot, that has a massive population of foreign born citizens from 3rd world countries with little to no education -- doesn't mean everyone is now uneducated and can barely read/write proper english.

Saying "americans" (with it's wide-varying degree of people on both ends of the educational scale) are stupid -- is akin to saying "All europeans are stupid". Without taking into accordance Europe has countries, cultures, races and obviously not all are the same.

(sigh...you'd be surprised how much i have to argue this point with arrogant brits who continually decry how americans are over-rated in the intelligence part).

Easy version: next time someone says Americans are stupid. Just say "no. You're stupid. Stupid". :)

I've always wondered the same thing. The world think Americans are ignorants. Ok, maybe it's true. Most of Americans don't know wtf is morocco (sp?) But Germany has like 12% of unemployment, the rest of Europe is fucked. They don't even have half the technology we have/develop. So at the end, where is the difference? or what is the priority?

Americans aren't quite as aware of politics or culture in Eurasia as Europeans. Go figure. Some Euros are just pissed off that they are not looking forward to much growth in the forseeable future. They see a few relatively fatter and more monolingual Americans touring Europe in Khaki shorts, bad sneakers and even worse shirts; McDonalds is in every major city in the world; the USA is more prevalent worldwide in economic and political news - and they get defensive and generalize.
 
Americans aren't stupid obviously. That said, the lack of knowledge of anything outside of the US for the average American can sometimes be appalling.

what never ceases to amaze me is how amazingly similar alomst everyone is.

But we walk around saying we are different and trying to carve out an identity for ourselves, while almost everyone lives a boring, balh, nothing special life.

Our ability to deceive is great.

i would say ignorant because of how they have viewed others based soley on things like race or religion

not all americans
but i have come across plenty in my lifetime

and some of these people have been extreamly inteligent

i hope you read my post again and notice i said i have come across more ignorant americans than stupid

thats my view of my life experience
hell, maybe i'm the ignorant one for giving people a chance instead of making a quick desicion about them...

Your claim for not liking americans is that they view others on race or religion...are not you guilty of the same offense by your judegment of americans.

I just dislike the fact that it is okay to generalize americans, almost politically acceptable.

You're misreading.

it is not about generalizing Americans per se, though I agree with what you are saying about politically acceptable to describe the masses as "ignorant".

What is at play here is people trying to differentiate themselves from other Americans who are very much the same. it is about a grasp for individuality in a society that preaches conformity, from politics to mass media.

In all likelihood, most people on this board within certain age groups are very much the same. You could further stratify them economically. If people were to accept this it would move their lives forward, instead they employ a artifical differentiation method to rationalize their shitty mediocre existence as unique.

Funny but sad. That's people here in the good ol' United States of Generica.

Fuck them is right, both them places suck, everywhere in this world all they wish for is to BE Americans. They want everything that is American everywhere, the "hate" for us is nothing but pure jealosy over the greatest country in the history of this earth. It's like midgets thinking there's an inside joke to the benfits of being small.

but i think when you come across a few bad apples, that is all that is remembered

I agree completely as a foreigner that lived in the US for a bunch of years on and off my whole life, I must say I was constantly stunned by how little Americans know about the outside world in terms of Politics/Geography/History. I mean things that are common knowledge in the rest of the world that school children know. Do you guys watch that Jay walking segment on Jay Leno? lol.

I think that the problem is that many Americans think, or are taught to think, that America = The world and The world = America and that there is nothing important or of value beyond the borders.

1. Maintaining an old car is much better (financially) than buying a new one?
(Speaking of, how's the 3000GT doing these days??)

2. Banks are a silly way of paying for large ticket items, better to charge them on a credit card and pay 18+ % interest?

And in the real world, Germany has an extremely dismal history, while America's heritage is incredible.

I am a college graduate and I couldn't pinpoint morroco on a african map. I would guess that it is on the west side. Does this make me ignorant? No, because Morrocco's geographic location is unimportant to my carrer and interests. If i were to travel there, which i have no desire to, i would study up on it...

Just because it's a country doesn't mean shit. Look at North America. It's "1" country with 52 states.

It's not my fault that Africa can't get it's shit together and organize itself into states instead of coutnry after country. It's just confusing when you think of it like that.

Ask any European where Idaho is and you'd probably get a bunch of responses that aren't even close. And I'd be willing to bet that Idaho is more important to the economy of the world than Morocco is.

Let's compare briefly:

Morocco:

The National product: GDP is about $70.3 billion (1993 est.),

Idaho:

$3.0 billion in GDP - 9% of state GDP---Economic Benefits of Aviation to Your State---That's from the aviation industry alone. Total GDP for Idaho is roughly 33 billion, or was. Same goes for Morocco as both estimates are a little outdated.

Our "little" state of Idaho (83,574 square miles) makes half of what the whole country of Morocco (446,550 sq km=982,410 square miles.) makes.
