Is this Normal While In Ketosis?

I started a keto diet on Monday, Sept. 24th. I have been using 'Ketostix' to measure my progress and have been in ketosis since Sept. 26th.

Last night I fell apart. It started with one Dorito chip. Then another... 2 peanutbutter sandwiches, half a bag of Doritos and half a gallon of milk later I went to bed completely pissed at myself but feeling very satiated.

The odd part? This morning I checked my ketone level and according to the 'piss stick' I am still in ketosis?!? What gives?

Its one of those weird things that happens sometimes. I would check your urine tommorow and make sure your still in ketosis. I haven't binged yet and am staying strong so that i won't have a junk food breakdown. Don't be so hard on yourself, everyone messes up at one time but just be sure and to get back up and start again.

Well, first off, check for Ketosis at night, you usually get the best results, esp. if you always check at night. Its not misleading.

Scathocephalus has a good point, i'd check it again tonight and see where you stand. It could be that you have a very low resistance to Carbs, and you may no knock yourself out. Also, don't forget that the strips don't have to be purple to mean your in Ketosis. I've lost weight with the strips being dark tan. It all depends on the person.

Lastly, get rid off all of the stuff you ate! I know the forst 2 or 3 weeks can be tough, but trust me man, after 2 weeks, its all down hill. You will NOT have those cravings.

I think most people cheat a little to begin with anyway. I ate a little bit of breaded fish when i first started, but i didn't suffer that much from it (this was within the first few days)

I'll check it tonight but I have tested it three times already today to see what's going on. Still showing ketones at 1PM.

As far as getting rid of the stuff that makes me cave in, well, when you have a wife and three kids you're either stuck for it or are going to get a divorce! I never thought that the PB&J would do me in. Now the Captain' Crunch is another matter altogether...

Oh man, wife and kids, that sucks! (sucks to not be able to dump the food) I'm lucky - single, and in college.

The thing that i had the hardest time with was having to cook if i wanted something to eat. Pork Rinds are your best friend. I have bags and bags of them on hand constantly. I usually don't get the munchies, but when i do, i grab those. I also keep lots of turkey breast on hand. Look for a brand called "Jenie-O". Its one of the few processed meats that is carb-free (the roasted turkey ONLY). Lots of times if i come in late and am behind on a meal, i'll have Turkey Rolls with Mayo and Mustard, Pork Rinds, and an Atkin's Bar.

If you haven't already, head to Wal-Mart and pick up a few of the Atkin's Bars, i really enjoy them. Stick them in the fridge first though, if they are room temperature, they're really dry and crumbly. Also, i don't know if you've read the book, but one thing it emphasises is watching your sugar substitues. Aspartine is the worst, hell almost all of them are bad. Crystal Light is "sugar free", and it screwed me up for WEEKS.

FWIW

From what I've read, it doesn't seem all that weird that you were still in ketosis after 'cheating.' After all, for diets like the CKD you actually take in a load more carbs once every 7 days and it's not enough to bump you out of ketosis. So I wouldn't beat yourself up over it. This is at least how I understand it. I did the anabolic diet (CKD by DePasquele) and I think I carbed up for 1-1.5 days every week, and never came out of ketosis. The carbs get loaded into the muscle glycogen as I understand it. Anyway, good luck and keep with it. later bro

7PM and still in ketosis. Cool.

2ordinary, very interesting post. It almost sounds as if you deplete your muscle glycogen levels enough that you can squeeze in a few carbs every 4-5 days and never leave ketosis. If this is possible it would help my sanity tremendously. I might try a Wed and Sat meal with moderate carbs to see if I stay in ketosis. Maybe it will even help me not feel so flat, muscle wise. Workouts suck while in ketosis. No pump.

I'll give it a spin and let y'all know what I come up with.

You may want to just change your ketogenic diet to a CKD (cyclo-ketonic-diet) as this seems to fit exactly what you want. You may want to wait more than 4 days before you start having a lot of carbs as this may be too soon. Check out Mr.X's article on CKD which seems like a good fit: www.elitefitness.com/articles/ckdmrx.html

The ketones will still show because after carbing up the remaining ketones are excreated from the blood. In theory after you ate all that the ket's level would have risen then droped as the remaiing ketones were leaving the body. Keto sticks only show IF ketones are in the urine not the quantity they are in. Once carb depleted they ketons will return.

I started keto this week (Sunday) and oddly, I've actually gained 2 pounds since then even though my ketostix have shown ketones for the last 3 days. I'm just going to assume that it's water weight for now.

Anyway, my question is this. Why would CKD be prefered over staying in ketosis all the time? Which would be more effective and why does CKD's carb-up work?
