Ok boars I took the MSF course, got my license and am about to make a move on a bike.
Its a Yamaha V-Star 650 with windshield, saddle bags, aftermarket pipes (loud), aftermarket grips, 90 day full warranty from dealership. Bike has 18k miles. Price is $3k (will joo them down to $2700 cash talks).

Keep in mind Ive never owned a bike and the only riding experience Ive had is the MSF course I just took this week.

Hey another virgin rider! Bro I'm getting my Triumph Bonneville in 3 weeks.

Does your state make the course mandatory? In Georgia it's not. I can get a MP and start riding, though I have been practicing on my father-in-law's bike.

Price seems good to me. And goddamn that's a low seat. Fuck what is that thing, 26 inches?

Buddy, you need to stop looking for deals. You GAVE Jon79 your money.:D

Bike looks good, but hard to tell by pics if has been repaired after being laid down. Most bike with 18k has a hig probability of being laid down or worse...especially an entry level bike. Just something to consider. Looks sharp though bro. HAve you booked it out on N.A.D.A.?

NADA values aren't accurate at all.. KBB is better, but still overpriced by up to a grand.

Didnt know if KBB did motorcycles. Yeah NADA normally is a bit off but it is at least some type of reference.

How the hell would i ever be able to tell if laid down after repaired? Carfax or something?

first look at the paint from a few angles...just like with a car or truck you can see how the repaint and the factory paint look diferent. Thats becasue of the difference between the heat used to bake the paint at a factory and a repair shop. you can also look at the alignment of the front forks and the rear tire...no way to get it back to perfect...the tracking will be a little off. That will also show on the wear of the tires if they have a few miles on them. Another thing is get on the floor and look up...look for non-factory welds, thats a sure sign of repair.....hope some of that helps.

thanks boar thats good shit. I didnt notice different paint or parts and the paint is factory metallic black all over but i will check the tires, welds , and fork alignment tomorrow.

I wouldn't worry so much about whether or not it was dropped and got minor damage and fixed, if fixed properly. The title will have a salvage/rebuild stamp on it if it was badly damaged. On a 6-year-old bike in good shape with 18K miles, it wouldn't affect the value so much if minor damage was fixed, UNLESS the title is a reconstructed salvage title. That's something they MUST tell you before you buy it, and in most states it's a crime not to. At 18K miles, though, I'd be sure they've gone through the bike, and checked/serviced all the bearings, fork seals, adjusted the valves, and the brakes, etc. All those things start needing attention around 15K miles, in my experience.

its fine as long as you keep this in mind.....in a year when you've gotten comfortable riding, that 650 twin just ain't gonna do it. YOu'll be looking for a new bike again within two years. But the strategy of getting a starter bike to get comfortable with riding and passing that damn test..is a good one. I would get an even cheaper bike to tool around on for a year and then look for something else. If you're going twin you need to at least be over 1100cc's. I've ridden 1400cc twins and been "less than satisfied". There's a reason why the majority of harley riders would immediately stroke out their new rides and put hotter cams in. And I'm no speed freak death wish kind of guy.....but I want enough response when I really twist that cable to get out of bad spots on the road you will find yourself in. I don't need nor care for a bike that quarters in 10 seconds.

WTF, I been out riding because I just bought that bitch LOL

The course is now mandatory as of last september, but once you complete it you dont have to take the riding part of the state license test, only the written. I dont know how low the seat is but its nice and low for me, and I want to lower the suspension a good 2 inches even more and put forward controls on it.
Been out riding it and its a fukkin blast robs!

I was your first post son. Totally dissed me.

Cool you bought it today, huh? Awesome! :garza:

Too bad you don't live in Atlanta. Couple d-bag newbies could ride together. The training course here is about the same as your state. You pay the state patrol $150 for the 3 day course and if you pass you don't have to take the riding portion of the test. Only difference is it's not mandatory.

150? WOW, i believe it's 20 in IL and you can either get your money back if you complete the course or donate it to the program.

Sweet looking bike, Dave!

Is she mechanically stock, or has anyone diddled the intake and/or exhaust to get a better note?

Only thing I'm not wacky about is the studded saddlebags. You planning on keeping them on all the time? I think the lines of your bike are fugged up by them. I'd put 'em on only for road trips.

The other guy put pipes on them and they sound pretty good, and are good in traffic to let people know Im around so I dont get murdered.

I will take the bags off, just havent gotten around to it, been riding too much lol. I just scoped out ebay for 3" forward controls and 2" rear lowering kits and the total will be around $150 so probably will do that soon. Then the bike will be damn near perfect. You know I gotta say even though I know shit about bikes this thing has got surprising power even on top end. I was in 5th on the highway going about 70 and floored it and it still really got up and went. Just checked the MPG and looks like its 43. Was hoping for 50 but that still a lot better than the 26 my car gets. Most pleased so far.
