I am also appalled by what has happened in the media. I'm sure your, um, parents have told you how unbelievably different it is now from 15 or 20 years ago. I feel sure that my case was enhanced by the fact that it was a matter of a journalist suing journalists.

But part of what specifically appalls me is the authorization of language like BOS's. I would NEVER publish his kind of garbage and it's published all the time now. He is very much an expression of the culture, which values shock and glibness over thoughtfulness now. There's something appealing in it but it's not an appeal to our best part.
I'm in my 30's so I well remember what it was like. Impossible not to notice the exponential increases in libel, slander, lawsuits, fraud, depression, suicide, medication, and the breathtaking breakdown of the American family. People simply don't try to cooperate and get along like they used to. It is all about me nowadays.

You may be alarmed if you knew the extent that I hold the media accountable for in contributing to these mega trends. Behavior like BOS's goes unpunished because it is so commonplace and punishment has become a dirty word. In addition, I would argue that writing on this board amounts to a publication of viewpoints so I really don't buy these arguments about "letting it go because it is just an internet chat board." Is the internet a less legitimate form of communication than paper, television, or radio? I don't think so. Actually we have less pressure to respond quickly and so have a lesser excuse for "slips of the tongue."

I'm sure that some would argue that "just anybody" should not be held accountable like a journalist or radio/TV personality. I have never become aware of ethical standards being set up and enforced upon the media nor of any "oaths of decency" that these people must take.

I would stop well short of saying that lawsuits are permissible for internet gaffs but banning is a pretty small consequence for rubbing everyones face in the excrement espoused by minds akin to BOS.

Whatever happened to manners????

I must live under a rock, I only found out about vicodin/percodan today.

Interesting post TB. You're right, there isn't any conceptual difference between posting on this board and broadcasting to, say, a small cable audience, or writing for a local paper. Sometimes the board feels like a private backyard conversation but everything is "published" for any and all to see, invited or not, as well as archived for later viewers.

Personally I don't care that BOS was banned. I spent a long time reading his bullshit in every thread before giving up on finding anything interesting. MoneyBags, on the other hand, was a total idiot on the clubs thread but wised up on the chat thread. He did occasionally show some smarts and ambition, I thought he had potential in a year. But I'm sure BOS will be back under some new alias. Some people can't take a hint they're not wanted and keep buzzing back for more.

My problem now is that my ignore list is empty, its first and only member is gone. A lot of programmers spent time away from families, working nights and weekends, living on donuts and cola to get that feature working, and few seem to use it. What a crying shame. Quick, somebody, piss me off!!!!!
