Is a martial arts class sufficient cardio/fat loss activity?

I cant stand doing "cardio" and Im interested in taking a martial arts class, specifically Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. It will be for 3 times a week about an hour and a half a class. For those whove done this, give me your opinions of its effectiveness for cardio and staying lean and in shape. Thanks

After 10 minutes on the mat, you'll be hurtin'.:) And, if you really like it and want to get good at it, you'll be forced to get in better cardio shape whether you want to or not. Any kind of fighting is the toughest cardio I've ever done.

So taking the jiu-jitsu would be all I should need for cardio then?

I can't stand cardio either... so I took up boxing. I hate running/treadmill/stairclimber etc... I love boxing. 3 minute rounds with the heavy bag are a blast.

i'm doing muay thai, hapkido and jui jitsu...all are demanding in their own way although i think Muay Thai is the most.

i say to also, get a weighted jump rope to supplement the cardio.

WooHaa...

Hey bud i am currently involved in forms of Goju Ryu karate. If you dont wanna do cardio i suggest you train your ass off while taking your 1 hour classes but i will say you will get used to it in about a month or 2. I train pretty hard now for 3 hrs 3-4 times per week and thats getting to be easy even at high intensity i feel good afterwards. I do cardio at the gym and you should but if you dont want to then just put extra efforet into your martial arts and you should be fine.

hey bro,
you'll love jiu jitsu. I've taught friends who were in "good shape" and watched them huff and puff and sometimes puke. Start slow, be careful for injuries. Don't get too egotistical or cocky... you'll pay for it eventually.

one of the big questions people ask me is GI or no GI?

I think its best to start wearing a GI, get your balance and what not. Then in a few months start taking a class or two per week without the GI. (most academies have both) You'll find its sometimes an even harder workout since it tends to move faster and its harder to finish when you're slipping and slidin all over the mat. After you get used to that, maybe mess around with a little Muay Thai and practice take downs - combine that all to start a little Vale Tudo/No Rules training. Thats when you'll be feeling the burn. And you'll be a monster by then.

most imortant... have fun with it.

I would think with a GI on you would sweat that much more and lose water weight and such.
