and of coursre they make adotpions of female babies difficult as possible so chinese people and the govt can sleep at night knowing "they won't sell their babies to foreigners". But it's okay to treat babies like garbage, live in poverty and throw them away.

While spending most of it's time slamming China for its misogyny, the author did reveal that the current treatment of girls is rooted in ancient practicality.
Girls grew into women who required payment to grooms' families (reason #1 not to have so many girls), and thereafter were no longer available to provide money or time to take care of the aging parents (reason #2 not to have so many girls).
You gotta know that 3000 years of history and custom are a bitch to break down.

Across China and India there are an estimated 100 million young girls missing.
In some villages in northern India boys outnumber girls 10 to 1 or more.
