"If you're eating two energy bars a day, plus a protein shake..............."

As you people know, you are not the average person (if you like to weight train). These guidelines do not pertain to us. They pertain to average people.

I believe the RDA's are minimum requirements for 95% of the population...that's if i remember correctly, which I might not.

And fogg...of course with water solubles it's not a big health issue, but if you're just gonna piss it out, why take it? Also, that can be tough on the kidneys.

Like I said before, the RDA's are the minimum amounts necessary to prevent certain deficiency diseases. Now, you must know that being one step above scurvy (or whatever) and being very healthy are at opposite ends of a spectrum. You can't say, "Okay, I'm not exhibiting symptoms of illness, therefore I'm at my best."

I agree, your body excretes whatever it doesn't need. There are times when your body doesn't need very much at all, but there are also times when your body is burning through vitamins, minerals, or other nutrients at a much more rapid pace. (Stress, exercise, exposure to environmental toxins, blah, blah, blah. ...smoking one cigarette depletes @25mg of vitamin C, a large chuck of that small daily RDA.)

It's kind of like the adage, "There's never a cop around when you need one." I'd rather err on the side of caution, and piss away a little bit of money, but at least have the nutrients that my body needs available when it needs them. And for excess vitamins being hard on the kidneys, I haven't heard of that before. Vitamins don't convert to urea or anything like that.

I'm not in favor of taking ridiculously large doses of vitamins all at once. However, I do think that taking divided doses of moderately large amounts throughout the day is a good idea. (This ensures that the water-solubles remain in the bloodsteram.)

It is actually the goal for 97-99% of the healthy population in order to stay healthy. This does not take into consideration daily activities beyond the basic required walking, standing and sitting. If we all sat on our asses all day behind a desk, then the RDA is great. If you lift , train and/or play sports, then the RDA does not apply to us.

...or smoke, or drink, or eat a high-fat diet, or live someplace hella-polluted like L.A., .....

...last time, since I know I'm beating a dead horse here. (whatever happened to that smiley?)

There's a difference between being asymptomatic (appearing healthy), and being truly optimally healthy.

Healthy as in 'no deficiency diseases'.
