Okay, I'm going to carefully weigh in on this one.
I was let go from a company because I violated the internet policy. In that instance, the policy was that you were not to visit sites that were not business related. Didn't matter what it was, just not business related. It was suggested at the time that I had pissed someone off, and this was their way of getting rid of me.
Getting fired from that place was one of the best things, professionally, to ever happen to me. The jobs I got after that were much better.
Now, on the flipside of that, I'm one of the IT guys that has to monitor and respond to "internet violations". We're setup in such a way that if someone goes to a "bad" site, we get notified. Once that happens, we look and see what site it is. If it's against company policy, we turn it over to HR, and let them make the determination about what to do with it.
I work for a smaller company now than the one that term'd me, and I think that smaller companies tend to be more forgiving of these sorts of things.
So anyway, I guess my point is, we're not all assholes.
Hope you skate out of it with just a warning.
