I Just Saw a Man Die...........

Was driving home on my teams bus from a game, 1:00am in the morning, nobody on the roads, and we see cop lights and shit.........turns out guy is on the other side of the median as were driving by slowly laying there dead.......went straight through his windshield, about 20 feet away from the car itself.......not sure exactly what caused his car to go out of control or how exactly it happened, or what he hit, but very sad nonetheless, just shows that we are not invincible and could have been any one of us or relatives.......everyone be safe out there on the roads and tell a close one you love them.

Go through windshield + Hit ground going about 70+ mph = Death.

If not just one of those........I'm pretty sure the initial impact from hitting the windshield was enough to kill him. If not, the impact to the ground ended any doubts.

One time on the way home from class on Hwy 59 in Houston, all the traffic slowed down and i drove by a leg laying in the road with the foot still in the shoe. Apparently some guy ran out of gas and parked on the center shoulder. He was running back across the freeway with a gas can when a guy on a sport bike caught him unexpectedly and tore his leg off. The guy on the bike was laying on the ground but i think he was ok. Anyway, that freaked me out for about a month.

Same shit happened in front of my neighborhood. Guy hit another guy on a motorcycle going in opposite directions. I saw the cop go an picks his boot with half of his leg still in it. They got a cross in front of the apt. where it happened.

What an Idiot you dont fuck around on Hwy 59....I've seen too many burned out Vehicles from 18 wheelers crushing families and trapping them into their burning vehicles

59 is probably the worst hgwy around houston. Hell Even the Pierce Elevated is safer and thats not saying much

I remember that one specifically. A guy i worked out with new the family that got trapped in that burning suv - the wreck where the drunk mexican overturned the 18wheeler and crushed their car. The whole family went up in gasoline flames while the mother watched in the car behind. I wonder how she ever made it having her whole life and family taken away by some drunk ass and had to watch it. I would have killed the guy.

I agree with you with your family driving in large vehicles. Unfortunatly, for the people in the smaller cars, getting hit by a big ass suburban usually means death. :(

It would be different if we all were in large vehicles. But some of us can't afford the gas or the SUV.

I guess the best way to try to protect yourself is to drive defensively and always have your eyes on the road ahead of you. But sometimes there just no preventing it.

That's what my wife drives. I don't understand all of this anti-SUV liberal crap.

BTW, a chartered bus crashed on I35 south of WACO yesterday. It was a Church group. 7 dead.

>Seatbelts...

80% of the fatalities in the US involved people WEARING seatbelts. A little fact car makers *don't* tell you.

Unfortunately airbags/seatbelts don't mean squat when metal and glass and steel start crushing you from all sides.

When i have a family -- they're all driving big ass Suburbans. None of this deathtrap Ford Festiva crap.

That statistic means absolutely nothing. To be have any statistical relevance, you'd need to look at (#fatalities w/o seatbelts) over (#fatalities w/seatbelts) after controlling for accident types and utilizing the same number of accidents. Fact is, more people wear seatbelts than not.

As for Suburbans, I care the least, go ahead, crash into me- I drive a Hummer H1.

Damn, I saw some dude wipe out on his bike at 90 mph. He landed about 100 yards further down the road than his bike. When I drove by the police were covering his body with a sheet. The paper said the next day that he was drunk and stoned on meth. as well as traveling way too fast.

I cam upon a BAD Dirtbike collision out in the AZ desert some time ago. Must have just happened. one guy was laying there with his leg nearly wrapped around his head, others were trying to make him stay on the ground. Then I gandered at the other guy, He was off in some brush with some guys who clearly didnt know CPR trying to pump his chest and shit but it was too late. His face was SOOO dark, purple, he was defintely expired. He was soo young and thinking of the chain of events that it had on so many other lifes (within his circle of Friends and Fam)was unbelievable.

Thats all pretty harsh. I remember a few years back this chick I knew came over to my bro's house. She was crying hysterically and we couldn't understand a word she said. Finally after she calmed down a bit, she told us that she had witnessed a car accident on the the highway, and that the vehicle next to her burst into flames with the person still inside. She said she could see the person screaming for their life through all the flames. All she could do is pull away to keep her car from going up. To say she was traumatized would be an understatement.

Supernav, do you just make shit up, or what?

The risk of a fatal crash is 7 times greater when seatbelts are not used - fatalities occurred in 22 out of every 1,000 unbelted crashes compared to only 3 of every 1,000 when belts were used.

Thus, almost all cars on the road today are equipped with lap or lap/shoulder belts; the vast majority have the lap/shoulder combination. Studies indicate that, when worn, belts reduce therisks of death and serious injury by 50 percent or more. Although most people may not be familiar with the precise statistics, virtually everyone is aware that "seatbelts save lives, " as the publicity slogan put it years ago

Everyone except you, supernav.

i am a lifeguard at the beach where i live and i had a person drown in the ocean. i rescued him but he was not breathing. i gave CPR for 12 minutes and stopped b/c he had no pulse when i did the intial recue. it messed me up pretty bad for about a month.

my good friend is a lifeguard and he had a 9 yr old girl drown on his watch. he rescued her but she had already drowned. he acted really differently for about 2months. he was so depressed that he let someone die.

one thing most people dont know is that only 8% of CPR recipients survive

* If you see you're about to get into a wreck and you can't do nothing then *prepare for impact* -- ie: slam the brkaes and LOWER your body and head.

I gotta disagree with this. I have been in 2 accidents that were unavoidable and sustained pretty serious injuries because I "prepared for impact". Most people, including myself, who see impending impact instinctively TENSE up, which is the worst thing you can do, as your body will absorb more of the impact. It has happened to me twice and even the second time, I tensed up and braced for impact. If instinct could be overcome easily and one could go limp then they would "roll" with the impact much like a drunk does in an accident (who walks away with no injuries).

Just my opinion based on my personal experience.

depends on the impact. I just got into a major accident and i was prepared for it and i was alright with no injuries. My sis and girl did not see it coming and were slightly hurt...scratches, whiplash, leg injury and facial lacerations...

I'VE SEEN A FEW PEOPLE DIE. A FRIEND OF MINE WAS SHOT 7 TIMES 20 FEET FROM ME. I'VE ALSO PICKED UP 100+ DEAD BODIES IN MY LIFE. EMBALMING THEM WAS THE FUN PART.

Now why did you have to go and say that. Everytime someone disagrees with your viewpoint if you're a conservative, that makes them a damn liberal.

No, i just spend a lot of time reading reader's digest and time magazine while on flights. :)

Reader's digest is one of the most biased magazines I have ever read. They should rename it Conservative magazine.

I saw a man lying on the highway. He had stopped his vehicle to help someone pickup Christmas presents that had fallen in the road. Some young idiot sped around everyone and hit him. His leg was all twisted and contorted, grotesque looking, it was obvious that he was dying and nothing could be done for him. That image is something you never forget. I wonder how much suffering he went through or if he was in shock and unconscious, which I hope was the case.

I remember seeing a kid drown when I was like 8. I'll never forget it. I remember seeing him and some other kids playing around near the edge of a bay and then just seeing kids crying. Next the police show up and they run in the water feeling around for him. Finally one of them finds him and they drag him out. They do mouth to mouth and pump this milky looking stuff out of him but nothing. His mother was so freaked out it was nightmarish. That gave me a feeling I've not forgotten to this day and pro'ly never will. It really makes you think when you see someone die up close and personal like. Sorry, this thread reminded me of that.

Acctually it is what kills you. Usually breaks your neck on impact, if you live through that, then you should be safe IMO.

SAFE???!!! I DOUBT IT....IF BY SOME MIRACLE YOU DO SURVIVE THE INTITIAL IMPACT OF HITTING THE WINDSHIELD, AND BREAKING YOUR NECK, YOU'LL PROBABLY BE TRAVELING AT ENOUGH FORCE THAT YOU WILL DIE IF YOU HIT ANYTHING. HOWEVER, YOU ARE CORRECT THOUGH, THE WINDSHIELD USUALLY DOES YOU IN.

i thought all windshields sold in the us are easily shatter-proof upon impact? Your bare fist could probably break one with a good punch. Designed for precisely that exact reason.

-= nav =-

YOU CAN BREAK ONE FROM THE INSIDE WITH A "GOOD PUNCH". I KNOW THIS CUZ I HAVE DONE IT A FEW TIMES. HOWEVER, IN A CRASH, THE IMPACT USUALLY BREAKS YOUR NECK. I'LL LOOK FOR A LINK THAT I WAS READING A WHILE BACK ABOUT STATISITICS ON AUTO ACCIDENTS. I THINK IT HAD SOMETHING ABOUT THIS IN IT.

Whenever I buy a new car, the first thing I do before driving it off the lot is punch out the windshield with my bare fist.

I was on my way back to high school when I saw a huge back plumn of smoke at the top of the hill. What I came apon I can never forget. First there was what I assume was a body that had slid on its face for maybe 50 yards leaving an arrow trail of blood and teeth followed another maybe 50 yards was a mass of burning Harley. Must have been the first to come upon the scene. Initially I drove by in disbelief, but woke up and slowed to go back. By this time a half dozen others had stopped so I continued to school.

Id agree about just getting off a hiway when in fog. Going too slow is asking for a serious rear ending which I believe is how many fog pile-ups start.

Drive a motorcycle on the highway and you're just flirting with death. I think some of these people have a death wish.
