I blame stupid people for telemarketers and junk email, not the companies

seriously, the pre-taped voice of "Michael, the friendly neighborhood demolisher of debt" would not be on my goddamn answering machine if there weren't dumb bastards out there that actually reply to these offerings. Same goes with junk email offering me free credit reports and a bigger dick. These companies know that this type of mass direct marketing is very inexpensive, so if they expect only a 10% reply rate, they have to up the amount of mailings/calls in order to reach those numbers, hence Michael and his annoying whiny voice on my machine. fuck.

Response rate is something market research firms use.
Penetration or production rate is something telemarketers use.

Reponse rate is basically a completed survey.
Penetration is a sale.

funny you should say that, and I am going to get a little educational right now real quick, but I recently read a book by Mark McCormack (founder of IMG and sports marketing as we know it) where he discussed in length the idea of sales and how many people are afraid of sales as a job. He brought up a great point that we are all born salespeople. from the day we learn how to speak and reason, we begin selling: selling our parents on why they should stop at McDonald's on the way home, selling our teachers on why we should get a certain grade, selling our friends on why they should hang out with us, selling girls/guys on why they should sleep/talk/relate with us. But, as soon as it becomes formal and we are getting evaluated, we forget how to sell and become wary of those types of jobs.
