How's this possible?

I've been eating about 1700 calories a day on my lifting days and about 1400 on non-lifting days, cycling carbs like spatterson's diet and I stepped on the scale yesterday and it has gone up 5 pounds. I'm trying to LOSE fat so how is this possible? BTW I'm 5'5", now 145 pounds I haven't done my bf% in a while so I don't know what it is. I guess I'm gonna have to measure it tonight. I was just wondering how the scale can be going up when I think it should either be staying the same or going down.

How long have you been following that diet? Also how are your clothes fitting? If its been 3 weeks or less, your body may still be getting used to the diet. The weight gain may be muscle gain, fat gain or water weight while your body is adjusting to the diet. Sometimes it just takes a little time to get the ol' system aclimated to the new regimen. If you notice your clothes fitting a little looser you are droppign bodyfat but I guess keeping the muscle.

I've been following a diet for almost 3 months now and have seen significant bodyfat loss (not measured, but my clothes are hanging on me right now) and I just now got a 5 lb drop in my weight after holdign pretty steady w/in 3 lbs for the whole time.

Also wondered if you are seeing any difference in your strength?

Your body may have gotten more efficient at glycogen storage in your carb cycling, and the extra weight could be attributed to glycogen supercompensation - water weight, in plain English. Remember, it takes four grams of water to store one gram of glycogen. Don't fret the numbers on the scale, go by how your clothes are fitting.

My clothes seem to be fitting looser and I can see my muscles better than I could before. It looks like they are growing. My boyfriend tells me I'm getting bigger anyway. Strength is going up, but I don't know if maybe it's because I'm pushing myself harder than I was before.

I've been following this diet for about 2 months. I just started taking methyltestosterone (1mg per day) a month ago though so maybe it is water weight. I'm just surprised to see the scale go up instead of either down or right where it has been for a year (135-140). I hope it's muscle and not fat!!! It just seems like I shouldn't be gaining either since my calories seem so low compared to the rest of the girls on the board. I guess that just goes to show every body is different. Thanks for the replies!!

Like others said, it sounds like water weight to me. Or muscle gain. Either way, just go by how your clothes fit and get rid of the scale. Drink tons of water and see if that helps...it will help if you have water weight. Or you could just be around that dreaded time of the month and are getting bloated...i know that is a problem for me.

I personally think scales should be used for target practice because they mess with your mind... I guess women have it pounded in their head growing up about scale numbers decreasing meaning success..

It messes with me..:fistfullo :fistfullo :fistfullo :fistfullo

Spatts - You ARE a badass!

Funny how someone who looks good steps on a scale or gets their BF done and if it's not what they want to hear then they feel like crap....and someone who looks like crap steps on a scale or get their BF done incorrectly and it's low, thinks they LOOK great.

...then there are those who it doesn't matter what they see in the mirror and it's NEVER GOOD ENOUGH!!!!!!!

I know for me there are alot of variables.

The time of day you weight yourself is one that makes a big difference I think.

STAY OFF THE SCALES....who cares how much you weigh?? Get your body fat done every 4-6 weeks and let that be the judge...if your clothes are fallin off..then you are losing inches...scales mean nothing..weight will fluctuate every day...becomes too discouraging for most women...go by how YOU feel...how YOU look...and dont sweat the SMALL SHIT!
