How would I do?

Yo! I'm a bodybuilder, but LOVE competition. Since I can only compete a couple times per year, very close together, I was considering powerlifting. I did a bit of powerlifting in high school, bench/squat/powerclean.

Here are my stats right now:

6'1" 218

Bench: 335 -- no bench shirt or anything
Squat: 550 ATF
Dead: 495 for 5 (never gone over 500)

Would I be kidding myself to try and compete locally? (Kansas City area) Also, my bench would really hurt me...

BTW, I'm natural. I'm a NANBF member, which means I get urine tested and polygraphed once per year.

Later.

You would do pretty good in a meet. You'll love competing! Its lots of fun and everyone is really helpful. I just had my first meet a few weeks ago and everyone there was helping me out with form and helping me with my gear. If you want go watch a meet first then enter one, that way you'll know what goes on during the meet.

Thanks! Do you think I'll need to buy all the stuff (bench shirt, knee wraps, etc.) to be competitive?

Also, I never hear about local competitions? Are there any good sites to go to in order to find out when meets will be scheduled in the KC area?

Sweet! Man, I'm pumped already. Plus, I don't have to do the psychotic dieting like I have to in bodybuilding... I'm starting to think that bodybuilding sucks for two reasons...

1. Unhealthy dieting
2. Winners are subject to judges opinion. I mean, yeah you have a dude telling you if you didn't get low enough on a squat in powerlifting, but it isn't nearly as subjective as BB.

kingsquat, wus up,dude.........hell yea ..compete,and yes i would invest in equipment.train for a local one like you said and have a good time...........

question....

are wrist straps alloud in competitions?

What up Mann?? Hope yer training is going smoothly. I'm halfway through my second week of the "Gain 50 pounds on your bench in 7 weeks". Tonight is my second chest day this week. I gotta do 2 X 3 with 280, 2 X 2 with 300, and 1 negative with 330. I'm sure the 330 will crush me, but I'll look cool as shit taking it off the rack!!! :D

I've typed in about every keyword I can think of into the Yahoo search engine and I can't seem to find anything about local competitions... I know they exist, How do I find them? Any good sites?

exodus-yes you can use wrist wraps, knee wraps..no elbow wraps.........

kingsquat-you 'll get it man,you will surprise yourself.i'm going to check my new powermag and powerlifting usa when i get home,i'll let you know tomorrow.clink on my top link and check american powerlifting association,go to the section with entry forms and look around.in florida i get florida muscle news and the two powerlifting magazines, but where you are i'm not sure, but i'll do my best to find one for ya',bro.yep my training is going good,i'm getting ready for one now......

exodus - When you say wrist straps, you are not referring to lifting straps correct? Lifting straps that wrap around the bar to help your grip are not legal to compete with.

The Mann - You are so lucky. :bawling: If the WPO was in my backyard I would be crazy motivated. What meet you doing next?

Mann -- I checked the USAPL and found this one in St. Louis on Nov 17th. St. Louis is only about 4 or 5 hours away, so I may give it a try. I have to start dieting for bb in January, so I have plenty of time to enter a couple.

Thanks for yer time!

kingsquat-sounds good bro,let me know how traing is coming.

Powfit-what's up!!!..........i'm doing the bench bash in nov.....i'm using it to get my ass in gear.are you planning on coming down and doing some of the WPO??:D

I would love to compete in the WPO. I am not good enough just yet. If I can hit 550+ at 181 I would have go. I have a bunch of weight to gain so it could happen. Your training going well? Feel good about next week? You have to let us know how it goes ASAP.

Exodus, go ahead and try competing. Don't get caught up in winning or losing. I think the other guys will agree when I say that the only person you are in competition with is yourself. So as long as you keep bettering yourself you are winning even if you don't earn any trophies. Plus every meet I have been to I have met some great guys at the meets.

Cheers,
Scotsman

Its cool Scotsman...

So, since I weigh 218 I would be in the big dudes weight class going up against some guy who is 5'6" weighing 225 and benching 500. Right?

I don't want to get down to 198 right now, but I think I would have to in order to be competitive. I'll be 198 or lower for my next bb comp in April. I'll get a few pl comps under my belt before then and then try and do one after I'm cut down around 198. I'm freakin' fired up already!

BTW, today in the gym I hit 280 for 2 sets of 4 and 300 for 2 sets of 2. After that I did a negative with 330, and it really didn't feel to bad. Chump change for you guys, but for me that is HUGE! Bench is by far my weakest lift.

standard weight classes

114 lbs, 123 lbs, 132 lbs, 148 lbs, 165 lbs, 181 lbs, 198 lbs, 220 lbs, 242 lbs, 275 lbs, and unlimited. You would fit in the 220 class easily.

http://www.deepsquatter.com has a list of meets, go to the strength list page. It is also a good source of info.

Kingsquat. Yeah the weight classes are much different in powerlifting than in BB. This is to keep someone who is 200lbs from lifting with someone who is 300lbs. Last meet I went to the was a guy who weighed in at 420lbs so I was glad they split things up well.

Bubba2k, they have recently added the 308lbs category then the unlimited at some of the meets.

Scotsman -- I compete in natural bb, so there aren't weight classes. In most sanctioned natural competitions, the classes go by height instead of weight. I'm always in the "tall" class. 6'0" and over.

bubba2k -- Thanks for the info! That deepsquatter.com is a pretty cool site. I spent quite a while downloading some freaky pl clips. I saw some dude bench 705, and he made it look easy! Of course, his chest was so freakin' huge that the bar didn't have to come down very far, but it was awesome none the less. 705 would mash me in half... :)

Kingsquat

Knew they broke up the classes different in nat. but didn't know that it was tall and short. Either way in powerlifting I am in the 278's at 6'2" so need to gain some more size and strength. Keep liftin and tell us how things work out for you.

Only in some orgs

The 308 class does not exist in all orgs, though I think now it does in a lot of them, just not the IPF. And let's not mention those funky NASA weight classes. The only one I remember is the 227s, WTF is up with that.

I don't know how common it is, but the ADFPA used to have the 319 class, and I think I have seen it since the USAPL(used to be ADFPA) became the IPF affliate. Just don't remember where, may be the APA.

compete brother, we are right about the same strengths, gotcha a little bit in the deadlifts. :)

Call the Powerlifting Superstore, order some gear and get in a meet! 800-268-2248!

I'm on it bro! I've started trying the dl's using sumo style form. It is MUCH better than what I'm used to. BB form, as I call it, isn't the best way to lift big. I used to dl using a shoulder-width stance with arms outside the legs, both hands over-hand grip.

My squat is the same way, I squat very narrow (BB form again...). I tried to squat wide-stance, but it zaps my strength. I'm going to stay narrow, just because BB is my first love. I'll probably get a lot of laughs from the hardcore pl'ers at my first comp! :)

BTW, Heavywear. You said we were about the same strengths... Please tell me that you bench at least 100 lbs more than I do...
