I don't take credit for this write up, which was pulled off of another forum. It'll tell you exactly what you need to do to play a game that should be available for consoles by now but isn't. A new installment with the hardware they have these days would also be sweetness.

KILLER INSTINCT:

I know i am not alone when i say that Killer Instinct was one of the top 5 fighting games ever made. Hell they basically invented the combo system. The arcade game was the shit in my opinion.

I am also sure that alot of you, like myself, tried to download the Mame version of this game and noticed that it will not run becasue of the some missing files. So, sicne i got mine working the other night, i thought i would write a little guide to help those like me who had a hard time with it.

Ok, first off you need to download the kinst.zip from your local internet Rom dealer. I used http://rom-world.com/file.php?id=23032 to get my Killer Instinct file.

Next, and this is the part that is going to be the pain in the ass. You are going to need the kinst.chd file. This file is very hard to find. I found mine using a program called "Bitlord". It's kind of like a P2P service for lack of a better way to explain it. So, in the search part of this program. I couldn't find anything for kinst.chd or Kinst.chd. So I typed in ".chd". A file came up that was 29gigs. Thats huge i know. I selected that. Now the cool thing was, this had all the Chd files for mame you could ever want. Since there were about 50 total files, you had the option to go through and select or unselect which files you wanted. I only selected Kinst.chd and kinst2.chd. The total download was only about 256MB It took a little while to download (20 hours or so) but eventually you get it.

Now you want to get the Killer Instinct v1.4 from whatever website you use to download roms from. I got mine here http://rom-world.com/file.php?id=35641.

Once you have the .chd, kinst14 and kinst.zip, here is what you want to do. In your roms folder, leave the kinst.zip file alone. Create another folder in the roms folder named "Kinst". In that new folder named Kinst, place the .chd file. Now, unzip the kinst14 file to the new Kinst folder you made where you placed the .chd file. DO NOT DELETE THE KINST14 file, leave it alone. now in the new folder, you shuold have the .chd file and the unzipped Kinst14 file (which is really the "u98-l14" file you are also missing). The kinst.chd file is about 93,387 KB and the u98-l14 file should be around 512 KB.

Once you have all this, open up your Mame emulator and audit all games. SHAZAM! There you have one of the best fighting games ever made.

NOTE: This was exactly what i did. Your results may vary but i did this a number of times and this worked every time. If you still have any questions, i will be happy to try and answer them.

Let me know if you have any issues and I'll try to resolve them for you. Hook a fighting stick or PS2 controller through a USB adapter to your PC and it's just like playing the arcade game.

Genius I tell you.

It's the arcade version. If I find some video recording software I'll put it on youtube. Runs flawlessly, even has all the dipswitches/board specs at bootup.

i'm definitely going to download this shit tonight... thanx bro...

btw, do you need a super fast cpu to run this game? I have no PC controller so it's prolly going to suck for me

Get a usb adapter from eBay for like $5 and a PS2 controller (the best controller ever made for modern fighting games. Or an arcade stick but I don't know of any good ones. Once again eBay might have one.

I played it on my old PC w/ Pentium 4 and 512MB ram, low end ATI vid card and it was playable but stuttered now and then.

Now with my new PC it's just like having the arcade game in my room. You can apply the same method of installing KI2 as you did for KI, but will need to download the kinst2.chd file separately if it didn't come with the kinst.chd file.

I love KI. The arcade version is so much better looking than the SNES version too. I used to love playing Orchid. ULTRA COMBO BITCHES!!
