how often should breaks be taken?

kortisol

I know different people have different recovery abilities depending on genetics and anabolic use, but for a natural lifter, how often should a trainee take breaks from lifting? Should a trainee hit the weights every week of the year? take a week off every 12 weeks, 8 weeks? In order to maximize continual growth and strength progression, how often (in general) should a trainee spend some time away from working out?

as you gain experience you will be able to answer this question on your own. everyone is different..

i give my body a break when i feel like it needs a break, its that simple. also things come up where i won't be able to go to the gym so those are mini breaks.

for the past 3 years my longest break was 2 weeks when i felt my ligaments were worn out. i took a week off a couple months back when i started getting tendinitis in my elbows.

of course its all dependent on what kind of training you do.. professional athletes have offseasons for a reason, their bodies get taxed during the season as they are pounding away and into others. especially hockey and football players.

I thought athletes train a lot during the offseason? The offseason just means there no competitive events to tend to. Maybe I don't listen to my body enough or something but it's hard to tell when I've had too much training. Sometimes I hit the same body part 5 times a week sometimes I hit it once or twice. I feel the same either way. Maybe I should try to overtrain on purpose so I know my limit?

training in the offseason is nothing like the poundage of actual games. athletes always take things up a notch when its the real thing, you get the adrenaline going and you got the crowd cheering you on. if the season was year round these guys wouldn't last very long (not that they do as it is) .. doesn't matter if you are a high school wrestler or a NFL linebacker. you still get that adrenaline going for your actual event.

bottom line is learn to listen to your body and give breaks if needed.

also training the same muscle 5X a week is more of a circuit training model.. not a model used for powerlifting or bodybuilding.
