Hernia?

I felt a slight pain near my belly button today - nothing severe or anything, it could have just been a bit of a muscle cramp or something. There's no lump or anything there that I can feel. I'm just wondering what to look for if it were a hernia. I've read that they aren't painful but stick out and can be pushed back in, but I've also heard that they can be painful. I'm going to see if it happens again before going to the doc. I hope I'm worrying about nothing here (I'll probably end up having no hernia but be diagnosed instead as a hypochondriac - you just watch).:D Any insight?

If you have a hernia there will most likely be a lump under your skin, where the intestine was pushed through your abs. I had one a couple years ago:bawling: all hernias need surgery. I didn't know i had one until i went for a check up.

My first hernia was an umbilical herinia. Located at the top of my belly button. Then buldge could on be felt when I pushed in and put stress on my stomach. The size was a little smalller than a pencil eraser.
I was doing back workout and about two hours later I noticed a weird pain like a stomach ache but something told me to use my fingers and feel around. Within a second I found the knot. Went to medical and a few weeks later had surgery.
I have real low BF so I could feel the knot. If you have higher BF or the knot hasn't pressed out far enough then you won't feel a thing.
Surgery is the only fix - if its a hernia.
Good luck

My brother had a hernia....had to go under the knife...leaves a pretty nasty scar....;)

Hey riker, what was the pain like? I only felt mine for a few seconds during a set of preacher curls and it didn't come back for the rest of my workout. I can't feel any bumps or anything either. It didn't really hurt that much it's just that it was right beside my belly button and I've enver had any real feeling there while working arms. I was going pretty intense as well on that last rep when I felt the pain. Any thoughts? Did you only feelthe pain the one time or many times? How long did the pain last.

My buddy had one inthe middle of his abs - was the size of a nickel - poked out and required surgery.

I was doing a back workout like ryker and felt a sharp pain. When I checked my abdominals me inny belly button was now half an outtie. Was filled with fluid and I could push it back in - but it would eventually bulge out again. Went to the doc and was told not to worry about it. Those idiots told be only infants get umbilical hernias even though I explained my heavy weight training.

Five years later - no surgery - and I still have the bulge which I can push back in (less than before). No pain at all unless I push hard on it.

How long does the surgery keep you out of the gym for?

a hernia can keep you out of the gym from 1 week to 5 weeks depending on how the hernia is repaired. I was out i think 2-3 weeks. I had an inguanal hernia and damn did it hurt after surgey. I walked around all hunched over not wanting to strectch my abs:bawling: .....but anyway i thought i got another one a a while back and went to see my doc. He told me i may have mildly strained an abdominal muscle but theere was no hernia. best of luck!!

Thanks natedogg. If it's not too much trouble, could you describe the hernia you got and had operated?

i JUST FELT SOMETHING ON ME TOO ONCE INA WHILE I'LL FEEL LIKE A PRESSURE LIKE 5 INCHES FROM MY PENIS ON THE LEFT HAND SIDE COMES AND GOES IN DAYS OR WEEK BUT NO LUMP I SEE OR FEEL HOPEFULLY NOT A HERNIA ONCE YOU GET IT YOUR PRONE TO GETTING IT AGAIN IN SAME SPOT

Same for me the umbilcal hernia had me in the bed for most of the time for two weeks and walking hunched over for three weeks. But the ingunial hernia I was walking in three days. Both of them I waited 30 days to hit the gym for 1-2 light weeks then back to the norm.

But now after two hernias I stopped short intense workouts because to get a good short workout you have to lift extremely heavy for a few sets. My body just isn't designed to lift that heavy. Now my workouts last 10-15 longer and I went from 2on1off2on to straight 6on one off program. This allows me to do more sets and more reps hince less weight but still intense.

Thanks everyone. I'm pretty sure it's not a hernia now. I did heavy squats today and nothing in that area. If anything, the damn squats and leg presses would make it act up but it wasn't a problem. Phew. I'm still keeping my eye on it though.

Hewlett: I get that exact same problem. Only when I do squats though. If I wear a belt I can go very heavy without a problem. For squats, I find that if you push back your shoulders as you're coming up from the bottom position it takes the stress of the lower abs and I don't feel the pain at all. That pain worried me too a bit but I've talked to a few other people who get it. The area feels pretty warm too in a way after the pain hits. It's odd.

When i had my hernia they used a "mesh" to keep the intestine from coming back out. I can tell you though right before i went under (to have my operation) that laughin gas F@cked me up!:D

Someone was telling me about how great that gas is today. I gotta get my hands on some of that shit. Just sit at home all the time talking to myself and giggling, "I fell great...I feel fucking great." I guess the trick is not to take too much so that you don't pass out.
