Helper for Barbell Squats....??

New member
My son always complains about his shoulders hurting from the bar while doing squats.

I'm tempted to just tell him to do his work and shut up, but his bf is about 7%, and he doesn't have much meat there.

Is there anything like a ramhorn, or something to place on your shoulder cradle in which a bar would fit. The typical pad that wraps around the bar doesn't seem to help. I was thinking something that sits on the shoulders and cradles the bar, which would spread the weight over a larger area...

Any ideas, or experience?

Thanks

I have been known to triple layer sweatshirts to squat. When my shoulder injury was at its worst, and I was in the most oppressive circa max squat phase ever, I had to do it to even walk the bar out.

Do his shoulders bother him for the weight of the bar or because he has his hands in too close and has them in an awkward position?

He is 14, and very lean. I believe the bar on bone is what bothers him....

thanks, the Manta ray is a good suggestion.

do a search on the net for the "manta ray", its like what you describe.

Yeah, these things rock. Its this blue plastic pad that clips onto the bar and then rests on the back. It really helps to distribute the weight. I keep trying to find one in stores, but i think you can only get them mail-order. But anyway, some people complain that the edges of the pad cut into the shoulder. But i guess you have to have big shoulders for that... something i haven't had to worry about. I am thinking of getting myself one once i get some money. They cost about 39 bucks, which isn't bad, but i have to prioritize my rent :)

When I go heavy...I wear 2 shirts and a THICK sweatshirt. Make sure he is using a wide grip and taking it LOW on his back...
