the clitoris is chopped so the woman doesn't get as much pleasure out of sex. it would be an abomination if she enjoyed it more than her husband. i think that's part of the reasoning behind it.

Female "circumcision" practices vary widely by region. Some of them "just" cut off the exposed tip of the clitoris. Some of them hack away the inner labia so that there is no "meat curtain" left. Some of them lace the whole hatchet wound shut with twine made from grass, as a sort of personal chastity belt. These barbaric procedures are often performed by the elder women of the tribe, with crude tools.

On the other hand, I was left intact without my parents' consent. All my male relatives are cut, and I was scheduled for the knife when I was born, but some scheduling conflict messed things up, I went home whole, and nothing was ever done about it. And for that I am eternally grateful.

Female Circumcision has lots of levels, sometimes a piece of the clit is clipped, sometimes all of it, sometimes all of it and then the vagina is sewed shut (YES!) and only her husband can cut it open
