I've been so busy that it just hit me that it is right around the corner. I'm going out that way for a work thing in bangkok but I greatly extended the trip to include a few side jaunts. I had to keep things fairly bangkok centralized, with the exception of the cambodia leg, thus my not going further south to the more dramatic beach areas.

Stops being made:

-Bangkok
-Siem Reap (Angkor Wat, etc, gonna go further north as well to visit the jungle temples beng melea and koh ker)
-Koh Samet (closest nice beach spot that didn't require another flight)
-Back to bangkok
-One full day excursion to the khao yai national park

-----------------------------------------------

I know billfred has been out that way and he had some suggestions (repost here, pls), anyone else have any favorite restaurants, markets, etc to toss out there?

I expect this thread will get very little response that isn't along the lines of "Oh, look at me!" haha.

My info is pretty dated but I will give it a shot

Sirroco - roof top on 82nd story. Reserve in andvance (like last week)
Zinatti - Italian small good
Baan Kanitta - upscale thai
Angilini's - in Shangrila - italian looks on the river. If you go here, make sure you save room for the chocolate suffle (Lava chocolate cake as they call it here) - it is done right and worth the the wait.

Calderazzo - Italian on Lang Suan
Ad Maker - Local Thai hang out on Lang Suan - usually have an 80 type rock band playing. Good fun.

Go for a run at Lumpini park - morning is best to watch all the different thai chi, yoga etc going on out there

Four Season's - everything there is good especially after their chocolate martini

Zen - good cheep japanese food. One of the great things about Bangkok is it is one of the few places to eat cheap sushi and japanese food

Cuppa - nice lunch place

Crepes and Company - french and my favorite breakfast place in the world. Go for a late breakfast, order the 5 course meal (make sure it includes the banana pancakes) and read the paper and get jazzed up on espresso

Oriental - everything is nice. I especially like breakfast on the river

Red Cross - go to see the snake show. I think it is every day at 10 am

Klong Tour - go down to pier by the Oriental and book a Klong tour. It is about 4 hours and you see only parts of bangkok accessible by water. Well worth the time.

hope this helps. my old brain may think of some more later.

Luan Suan is a street that runs into Lumpini Park. It is chock full of restaurants and pubs. The Starbucks there is an converted from an old thai house. Big room with leather couches, books and magazines. Great place to hit if you are looking for some A/C and WIFI.

Kao San road is the backpacker and hippy hang out. It was not my crowd but is VERY popular. Probably need to head down there if you are looking for $10 room and some opium.

oh.. there is a bike shop near Lumpini Park (Probike). If you want a really good workout, got there and rent you a bike for Kao Yai.

make sure you eat the fried banana's off the street

also, make sure the fried items are the ONLY thing you eat off the street, including the fried bugs down on Soi Nanna.

Don't eat the soups or salads off the street no matter how much of an iron gut you think you have or how good they taste. You will end up in the hospital.

Last item, and probably most important, Bumruengrad hospital is where you go if you need ANY medical help. They will take care of you from a cold to open heart surgery.

If for some terrible reason you land there, send me a pm as I know the administrator and he will make sure you are taken care of.

Figure out how to use the sky train from day one. It is the fastest way to get around. It is also cheap, safe and air conditioned.

Oh Hard Rock cafe is full of hookers at night. Don't go there.
