Having trouble with shrugs because my grip is too weak

I simply can't hold enough weight to do shrugs well enough. I was doing them with 60lb dumbells for a while and could hold them okay but I wasnt getting a workout. Now I am trying doing them with 165 on a straight bar but I can barely hold that shit, my grip is not strong enough (hehe I can see b fold laughing :)) !!!

Any advice? Should I concentrate on form until my grip gets stronger? What's the best way to buiuld grip?

try chalk. I thought I had a horrible grip and used straps. I learned to use chalk and bammo and it keeps getting much stronger.

Do the work-out where you grab the pole/stick and roll the weight up on a rope. I think thats a great excerise for working on your grip.

deadlift, you will be able to get trap stimulation and grip work as well. also a slower cadence will help work your traps adn your grip

I like using weight clips for grip exercises. I have the same issue, so I've lowered the weight and do 12-15 reps now. The change has been really good so far, and I've been able to build my traps up alot quicker.

Use straps and start doing some grip work. At the end of every workout go to a high bar and hang for 3 sets of 30 seconds. When that gets easier go longer. Look into captains of crush from Iron Mind

yeah, I also have the same problem, so I started using this grip training thingy. The one that you squize. So I've been using it for about two weeks now, and people have been complaining that I hurt their hands during handshakes. :FRlol: ha ha ha. Anyway, try that, it will hep.

It so simple. . . .work on your grip strength and when you get to the heavy weights use straps. Don't let your entire body suffer due to a weak grip.

Get into the gym and train those forearms!!!

Yep.....i agree (except maybe for the forearm thing)

GhostMan: A wrist roller will help to some degree.....even more so if a thicker handled roller is used. But dont forget we are talking about supporting strength.

Thats what everyone is getting mixed up with. The more i train my hands the more i realise that there are so many types of hand strength.

Using grippers may have some cross over to SUPPORTING strength.....but not as much as supporting exercises.

so i sugest things like timed dumbell holds(simple load a dumbell and lift it to your thigh....and hold till you drop it), rack lock outs (dead lifts in a powerrack using only a couple inchs of movement.
farmers walks are pretty good....if you have enough space and co-ordination to keep on walking.even things like hanging off chin up bars can help as well.

but as louden_swain said....dont let it stop your work out. go as heavy as you can with no straps....then when your grip starts to fail start using straps...and work your grip later.

dont get addicted to using them.

You can't say this, there is times where straps are necessary.

ya, maybe when you are goin for a new deadlift max..
but you cant use them in meets, so really, they have no use for me.

i hate those guys who use straps for EVERYTHING, like bench??
barbell curl??? um.. calf raises, HAHA... i hate those people..

i think i used straps for a week. then my training partner brought siccors to the gym the next day and cut them up.. im glad he did..

I use straps on heavy shrugs. And yeah, maybe my grip isn't as strong as it could be. But frankly, I'd rather have big traps. :)

I was at the Olympia expo last October and picked up some wrist grips that were made of rubber. The work well and don't put too much stress on the wrists like straps do. I can go much heavier then before and my fingers don't give out. After doing a lot of back work, my fingers start to get weak so the straps really help.
