Avoid them like the plague.
Processed meats, even those listed as low-fat, are usually high in sodium and will also contain nitrates which is used as a preservative or as a colouring agent. In some cases, water is forced under extreme pressure into meats like ham to increase the volume of the finished product. You may see on some labels 'No Added Water' which indicates that it has not undergone this process.

If you are going to buy meat, of any kind, stick to fresh cuts.

All are loaded with sodium, and processed meats should not even be considered in a diet . If you want meat for a sandwich cook a small turkey and carve it up or chicken tenders pounded thin and grilled are good in a wrap or low carb roll.

:p Be creative with your real meats!

wow, glad i read this section. I was quickly dropping fat until i started gorging myself on "fat free, overroasted turkey breast." normally im uberstrict, but felt this wouldnt be all bad. lol my bad, will stop that immediately seeing how my fat burning rate has seriously dropped in the last two weeks since i first endulged

Just to add onto this, they are often loaded with brine as well as water. It's amazing how you can buy a nice size bit of meat cook it and watch it halve in size!!!

Processed lunch meats are an inferior source of protein at best, plus just by the word processed, additives we just don't need.

If I do eat this kind of stuff, I get it from the deli and watch them slice it right off the turkey for instance. Even this is rare, cause I don't know how they cooked the turkey.

imo they are better than skipping a meal i.e. you are due a meal on the motorway or something and the only place to buy food is the servce station and they have processed meat or something it is better than a chocolate bar but shouldnt be a part of your diet only someting used as a last resort.

so everyone is saying proccessed is nono, are we talking about completely proccessed as in where yu have to peel off the seal to get the meats out, or deli sliced as in "lunchmeats" where they slice it from the machine?

i wouldnt eat proccessed reguardless i just dont think they use real meat lol

It's interesting to hear all of this. I myself eat quite a bit of them and gained plenty of mass, good genetics i guess.

I was eating a ton of deli meats...usually smoked turkey or ham. This weekend Im going to bake a turkey breast in the oven to use for sandwiches and such for the week. I also have a smoker so Im sure smoked turkey breast and smoked salmon will be on the menu soon.

about every 3 weeks or so i put boarshead turkey and boarshead virginia sliced ham on my grocery list...i never buy the ones pre-packaged. i don't think they are horrible when bulking....but on a strict diet these are a no no. maybe as a cheat meal

Ham and processed meats are not good for you. You should stay away from, anything processed actually. Particularly processed bread. When you eat these foods, your body doesn't get to do 'work' to break them down, and hence cause fat build up. Eat foods, that are full of whole organic components. So *white* bread is evil.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

So does this also mean deli sliced meat or just packaged meat because i eat deli meat alot and want to know if its bad so i can cut it out of my diet.

i eat sliced deli turkey as well about once every few weeks for a while now...it has not hindered my results or my goals. i think you need to ask yourself the same question. obviously there are better choices but it all depends on if you are seing progress

Isn't deli sliced meat the same thing? I mean, have you ever seen a turkey breast that big or a ham that is completely missing the bone in the middle?

Any processed, flavored or preservative foods are not good for you. Stick to Organic :)

how about Oscar Myers 98% percent fat free Turkey Breast?

I'm used to buying a lb or so of fresh sliced ham from the deli at the grocery store, so if this is bad then what do I get? I guess for turkey I can get a whole one but what about other meats???? Is there any way to get healthy ham?? Thanks to whoever made this thread, its opened a new barrel of worms for free.

Nah. not for me.

I have a somewhat limited income, so I make do with any low sodium kind I can. If you can afford to though, get the real meat. Red meat, chicken, ect. Enjoy what you eat. Healthier and MUCH better tasting.

Packaged meats usually have lots of nitrites. Nitrites have been shown to significantly increase your risk of colon cancer. Stay away from any processed meats if possible.

Then if deli turkey and ham are no good then jerky isnt good either? Jerky is loaded with sodium, nitrates and nitrites as well.

Word up. Nitrites/Nitrates are foreign toxins that can do some major internal damage. Look for whole, natural, organic unprocessed foods. There are no additional ingredients to whole foods; none.

So how about fresh ham purchased at the store that you put in the oven.... you know.... for Thanksgiving?

Right now I'm not too concerned with anything aside from decent gains & improving performance in the gym with high protein foods.

high in sodiam, high in sat fats and loaded with nitrites which is a known carcinogen which they use as a preservative. I will let you know that some grocers have preserve free organic lunch meats which is a much better version if you are still going this route.

terrible! processed meats are full of shit. I discovered the deli meats are way better, or cooking your own roast or chicken is even better. I have some good recipes posted if you look. The only thing good with the processed meat is the free tupperware container you end up with-

those are not good for you
what you can do?
some of the meats that you buy are real turkey or real chicken breast
they look the same as the processed meats
just need to look at the label

I think its like most things in life, as a once in a while backup im sure the ability to hit your basic nutritional commitment during that meal is better than the negative impact caused by the nitrates and sodium, however if this becomes your regular plan, your going to negatively impact your pontential. Ive realised that body building is 50% preparation and 50% execution. imho.

3-oz. portion of roasted ham has 123 calories, contains complete protein, thiamin, niacin, and all other minerals.

But I wouldn't have it if I have any heart problem or having issues with high blood pressure since the sodium content is really high. A serving of ham contains 1,022.5 mg of sodium, and that amount makes up a significant portion of the recommended limit of 1,500 mg for those with medical problems.

Boarshead roast beef is good its the top of a cows ass roasted n sliced. If u eat beef.. Lower sodium 2
