Gyms are starting to suck

New member
I am new to these boards. Have been a member for about a month but lurking in the background aquiring as much knowledge as possible. So far I have to say there are a lot of smart people here that know there stuff. I'm fairly new to bodybuilding been doing it on and off for about 3 years. Finally made a commitment to being serious about it. Was training at home most of the time before I decided to join a gym. A lot of what I have read here about the gyms being full of bs it true. The gym I go to seems to be a place where people try and use it as a dating service. Or people using crappy form and comparing how much weight they can lift to other people. I am by no means huge and the f**king meat heads are always smirking by how much I lift. I'm a beginner for gods sake. Everybody had to start somewhere. But I respect those meat heads because they are only a handful of the people that go there to actually train. I just get sick of all the s**t. Kinda wish I could set up a full gym at home. But being an apartment dweller I don't have that luxury. Whatever happened to the days where you just go in do your thing nobody says anything to anybody and just minds there own business and leave? Oh well. F**k em. I go there work my ass off and leave. Anybody else out there have to put up with this and what do you do to avoid it? Besides not going to the gym.

You sound really uptight dude, chill out. Quit crying and go to the gym and work out or dont go at all. Sit in your apartment and be a hermit.

I know what you mean bro.....that shit gets on my nerves too.......I'll I do if people start staring at me is just stare right back.....if they say something I just tell them to fuck off....other than that......I just mind my own damn business and don't bother anybody. If someone comes and tries to talk to me, and I'm about to do a set I just tell them to hold on for a min. while I do my work. then they can talk all they want. They usually just get tired of waiting so they just turn around and walk the other way.

Man don't worry about what others think about how much you lift. The other people there that are serious about working out will understand that you are just starting out, and if you ask them they will probably help you with your workout.
Get yourself a notebook to keep track of your workouts, and try to plan out your workout before going to the gym. That will help you stay focussed on your workout.
Knowing what you have to do for that day.
If it is all the talking going on around you that is the problem, then do like I did, go get you a little portable cd player with earplugs and wear it while you workout. It helps tune the distractions out, and lets you cocentrate.

I am in the same boat as MTrapper. I have been going to the gym for quite some time, and a couple of months ago I got serious about it. I know the exercises, but I just can't seem to put on bulk. I am not eating as much as I should. but I totally hear you MTrapper. while I am at it, what are drop sets, supersets, etc.?

Thanks for the replies guys. Its nice to know I'm not the only one that deals with this. I'm just going to follow what yall reccomended and just tune out. It sucks having to pay a membership fee dealing with this. But hey just gotta keep training hard.

i damn sure wouldn't pay my memebership to worry about what people think.maybe others are lookin at the one's that are lookin' at you!!!

i hate assholes that take up a machine, taking there sweet ass time between sets while talking to whoever. i go for one reason and one reason only, to workout. if you want to go and socialize then get the fuck out of my gym. another thing that pisses be of are skinny little pricks that think there jacked. they load too much weight on then struggle and cheat just to say they did it. last, people that have shitty form and do exercises wrong. learn how to do it the proper way before attempting.

devil

Most "gyms" have become social clubs with very little training and lots of standing around yacking. It annoys me to be unable to use a maching while a wanna be uses it for an arm rest. My .02:rolleyes:

Write up a routine so you know what you are going to do while you are in the gym (this will give you less time to think about what to do next and get distracted), bring a cd player or mp3 player to tune out everyone else, and finally, don't worry if you are just a beginner. If you stick with the program and eat enough you'll grow, have patience.

My feelings:

I'm not looking around at ANYONE except when I'm doing cardio, and then it's usually looking over the sweet ladies.
Sometimes I'll watch someone that looks like they know something to see a new lift.

If someone is sitting on a machine and not breathin heavy like they just finished a set, politely say:
"Are you done with this machine"? OR "May I work In between your sets"?

Is it worth gettin pissed off and ruining you time in the Gym because some skinny NumNuts thinks he's all that?

Or if some other dushe that just wants to prove something?

I enjoy the times during cardi watching the action, both Hot and Snot...:fro:

I've been going to gyms for about eight years now. And the fact is that posers, meat heads, fashion boys/girls, etc. . . have been standard equipment at most gyms for a long time now, and probably always will be. No less than bench presses or stationary bikes.

The good thing is that once you get going on your schedule, you get used to it. They become a little less visible each time.

Hi there guys, I use to have a problem with that but now I have been going to the same gym for over a year now and everyone that has been committed to staying in shape are pretty much use to me, it is the new guy's and gal's that come and see how much I lift and they are just amazed. I still get the whispers and some guy's somtimes stare like WTF but you know what ? :finger:

Ya, there are definately guys and girls in there training to be a backstreet boy or the next member of destiny's child, but you've gotta just tune 'em out. If your looking to get away from the pressure, go to a college gym. I've done this a few times just to check it out and i'll tell you, they are the best. Most are athletes trying to get ahead or people who work really quick cuz they have to get home and study or party. Also, the prices are extremely reasonable, $25/month... that's canadian funds. Plus, you get pool and court facilities too. If there's such a facility near you, try it, it's great.

I've seen that stuff for years. People sitting around talking, and junk. It is annoying, but tune them out and you'll be fine. I just go in, do my thing, and get out. These people that have 5 minutes between sets are a joke. If they're on the machine socializing and I need it, I'll ask how many sets they have left. They usually get the message. Also, you might try going at different times of the day to find out when your gym is less crowded. I have also been to some 24/7 gyms which usually don't have the "health club" / "dating game" crowd. Train like you're pissed off and people will avoid you. I hardly ever make eye contact either. I guess I'm somewhat of a weirdo for that, but I go to the gym to work, not sit on my ass and talk.

I feel your pain man, looking foward to getting back to college, they just built a new gym there, free for students, and most everyone is there to do something besides pick up dates or socialize. Alot easier to do that on campus when your not sweaty.

Try this, next time one of the guys is staring at you, wink at him and lick your lips He'll either beat you and never look yoru way again or simply leave you alone :fro:

One of my favorites are the people who come in and do 50 reps on leg extensions, but take about a 10 second break between reps, and are using about 3 pounds grrrr

One nice thing about the gym here, is the idiot crowd is generally on machines, and I prefer the free weights for good core lifts.

That's commercial gyms for ya. Especialy Presidents and first hoe's. God that place was more like a brothel.

CD player is a must, now I mainly listen to mellow music, but when I work out I need something EVIL!!! So while I'm doing my warm up on the bike, I'm checking out the stations I want to workout at and who I'm going to have to kick off.

My goal is to get in and out in just over an hour. I've forgotten how much going to the gym can be time consuming for you civilians. If traffic sux it could take 30mins. each way.

In the gym I like some:

NIN, Ministry, Pantera, Marylin Manson, Meatallica (And Justice for all and before, every thing after that sux)
10,000 Homo Dj's, Gravity Kills, Fear Factory

Stuff like this, any suggestions Peeps champ?

BTW when I say "evil" I'm referring to the hard hitting style.

I got totally fed up with LA Fitness after about the third time of something like this; two housewife types standing directly behind me when I am trying to concentrate on heavy calf raises. They are talking so loudly and laughing about whatever, that I can't even maintain concentration. One time, similar types trying to figure out the tricep extension machine, and one says to me: "You look like you would know, how do I get this part of my arm to tone up?" (pointing to her, yup, triceps) I paused, looked at her matter of fact and responded; The vacuum cleaner

here is my take there are three kinds of gyms. the first is a gym. Hard nosed get down to it screaming and yelling with plates banging type place were there are very few women and the ones that are there know their shit. No offense to the women. There is a fitness center. I unfortunately have to work at one of these. This is the place were you will find some large mofos. Some really out of shape people and a good deal of women of all varieties(some that are hard core some not) some just trying to get dates some not. The age range here is anywere from 18 to 60 then there are spas these are just places were some go to stay in shape an dont really want to train because of their fear of getting too big. lol

well bro it seems to me you are at a fitness center. There you have the worst of both worlds cause trust me if you would go to a serious gym most of the long timers would still be staring at you but there would be a few who would maybe try to help you but it is hard for newbies at a serious gym becuase of the intimidation factor.

My suggestion just go with the flo buy a good set of headphones and concentrate on what you are doing. Try to be as polite as possible without being too social and you will actually learn from watching when you dont have to hear all the bs.

I have notice that alot of people stare when you don't lift alot of weight. I can hardly lift any weight, but I have huge legs and everyone thinks I can run the 100 meters in a second and squat over 1,000 pounds. The truth of it is I strain at 200 pounds and can't out run a turtle. I learned that people are gonna stare, and say nasty things. But you know what? My legs are still bigger than theirs! :D

Just don't worry about it - there are assholes in this world. Deal with it

Thanks for all of the advice guys. Its nice to know I'm not alone. I will be honest. I to check out the babes or maybe watch the big fellas while I am resting between sets. But I don't ogle. I figure it will make other people nervous and so out of respect I'm not going to just stare. Yea it really pisses me off when people stare. Its like get a fucking life. What are you looking at? I do talk to a few people in the gym before I work out and then hit the weights. I don't go there to socialize and pick up dates. I just can't believe that some people actually pay a membership fee in hopes to score or whatever. I do notice people the "idiots" of the gym that are always great entertainment. But I don't dedicate my time to being fixated on them. Oh but yea, its so true so many time wasters in the gym hogging equipment or what not. I guess some people don't work for a living. Oh well like everybody in this forum said we are only there for one reason, to get BIG! Keep pumpin everyone.

Not to beat a dead horse but here is a list of my gripes:

1.)Scantily Clad Women--they'll come sit next to me in some flimsy outfit doing the exercises totally wrong, but in a manner that shows off their body the best to turn heads...they walk around in almost nothing wanting to be looked at, and pretend to get all offended when they catch someone eyeing them. They hafta show up in the latest Express or DKNY workout gear...and distract distract tease tease...

2.)The Water--at a gym you'd think the bubbler/fountain/whatever u call it would be somewhat decent since a workout without water is pointless...but my gym's water must flow through rusty sewage pipes before it surfarces. I bring my own bottle of spring water, but once in a while i'll run out before i leave and be forced to put my mouth to that garbage.

3.)Dating Service--the fella who started this thread said it best. So many people choose which exercise to do based on where other people are standing. I've seen many start new bodyparts (going against initial plan) just to be with whoever it is.

4.)The Locker Room--everytime i arrive and depart, i go to my locker and there is a handful of 90 year old men standing around nude...i keep my eyes on the ground, but its awkward as hell doing a combination next to a nude old guy who is in no rush to throw on his undies.

5.)The Music--My gym @college has no tunes...just weights clanging and voices chattering. My home gym has soft rock...since its more of a 'health club' i guess they dont want to offend anybody with words that were swears in the 1920s that sometimes appear in hip hop and alternative music.

6.)Next In Line Kids--@school, plenty of times kids will come up and ask me how many sets i have left. Odds are its 1 or 2, and the fuckin kid will stand breathing down my neck trying to use 'willpower' to get me to finish quicker.

7.)The "how much u do" factor--I just learned this recently so i wont act like a lifelong believer...it aint that big a deal how much weight you do compared to jimmy and bobby. I'd rather be a jacked mofo that can only bench 175 than some portly fella who benches 405. Once u leave the gym, looks is all anyone goes off of.

8.)Insiders--Just because u know the biggest kid in the gym or the trainers or johnny popularity, it doesnt make you God....because the minute that guy leaves your side youre just a joe and i'd rather see a joe without an ego trip.

Dont get me wrong, i love gym life....these are a few aspects that bother me. I never bitch about them but since people seemed to be getting shit off their chest so i'd thought i'd jump on the wagon. Get at me if you feel the same way i do on some of these, i'd be interested to know.

I seen a couple of older guys on two different occasions (early 40's) beaten off at Pres. and 1st Hoe way back in the day. I just remembered that I guess I had tried to bury the thought. Who wouldn't? I guess I was pretty grossed out, now I think its halarious.

That place was bad like I said earlier it was like a brothel. I guess that's why you have the "social" types. On both sides they know full well. You have the chics in thongs that only do stiff legged dead lifts with a 5lbs bar all day. She's knows some sucker will approch her. And like clock work every time.

Ya know what else you gotta wonder about the older guys that are in no hurry to get dressed. You know that guy just loungen in the locker room?
