Green tea and steroids

New member
Is green tea a good thing during a steroid cycle or is it a "no-no"?
It seems that is has some endocrine modulating effects which might be detrimental to growth but I am not smart enough to make any conclusion frome the medline searches so please help me out.

The medicinal action of androgens and green tea epigallocatechin gallate.

Unorthodox (non-traditional or alternative) medicinal practices have been expanding very rapidly in western countries. Modern physicians, scientists, and non-traditional medicine practitioners now must join forces to promote evidence-based medicine to benefit patients. Green tea extracts are among the most widely used ancient medicinal agents, while androgens are probably the oldest drugs used in a purified form in traditional Chinese medicine. It is now clear that a specific green tea catechin, (-)epigallocatechin-3-gallate, can modulate the production and biological actions of androgens and other hormones. Modulation of androgenic activity and administration of (-)epigallocatechin-3-gallate may be useful for the treatment of various hormone-related abnormalities, such as benign prostatic hyperplasia, baldness, and acne, as well as androgen-dependent and -independent prostate cancers. (-)Epigallocatechin-3-gallate has also been shown to modulate appetite and control obesity in animals.

Modulation of endocrine systems and food intake by green tea epigallocatechin gallate.

Green tea polyphenols, especially the catechin, (-)-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), have been proposed as a cancer chemopreventative based on a variety of laboratory studies. For clear assessment of the possible physiological effects of green tea consumption, we injected pure green tea catechins ip into rats and studied their acute effects on endocrine systems. We found that EGCG, but not related catechins, significantly reduced food intake; body weight; blood levels of testosterone, estradiol, leptin, insulin, insulin-like growth factor I, LH, glucose, cholesterol, and triglyceride; as well as growth of the prostate, uterus, and ovary. Similar effects were observed in lean and obese male Zucker rats, suggesting that the effect of EGCG was independent of an intact leptin receptor. EGCG may interact specifically with a component of a leptin-independent appetite control pathway. Endocrine changes induced by parenteral administration of EGCG may relate to the observed growth inhibition and regression of human prostate and breast tumors in athymic mice treated with EGCG as well as play a role in the mechanism by which EGCG inhibits cancer initiation and promotion in various animal models of cancer.

And there are many more...

I take green tea equivalent to 4 cups every day. I take it all the time, during a cycle and after a cycle. It is just a potent antioxidant that may help prevent cancer. This is why all those Japenese people can smoke twice as much as us and come out with a much lower incidence of lung cancer. It's been said that the polyphenols in green tea are highly effective in cancer prevention. For me, green tea on a daily basis is the way to go. It's been proven to work and I believe that it is one of the few supplements that actually provides real life benefits.

- Thanks for your answer
Yes me too. I like the mental effects is has but also the many many positive healthy things green tea have.
I just thought that if it was necessary I could go 8 weeks without it if it was detrimental to growth when on AS.

Anyone else wants to share some info?

It's not going to minimize your growth at all, nothing like Arimidex or Nolvadex (anti-estrogens).

The second study, though, is a bit tricky I think. They measure a decrease in testosterone, body weight etc. But that can come from just a smaller appetite. The rats ate less and therefore these endocrine factors fall. at least, I think!

Do some of you chemist guys dont have some wise words to say about green tea and AS?
Then I'll just go for it and drink up and enjoy the healthy catechins, polyphenols etc... :D

The second study stated that green tea can decrease blood levels of testosterone by inhibiting testosterone secretion in the testes (no other possible mechanism) , which by itself would be a bad thing.
While on cycle, you don´t have to care about that at all, you shoot so much more test than your testes would ever secrete (they don´t do that on AAS anyways) that it really doesn´t matter.

Since the study also showed a significant decrease in estradiol levels, Cholesterol and triglycerides it´s a godd thing to drink regularly while cycling. An a potent antioxidant can never hurt as well.

How can you tell that the rats produced less testosterone due to the tea?
It could also be explained by the fewer calories they ate. hypocaloric = less testosterone.
