Getting a new laptop

I skipped over where you said it was a ASUS

I'd honestly pass

while like you said ASUS makes great MOBO's, their laptops are super meh

Thanks guy, I might keep looking since some user experience with the ASUS laptops haven't been so good. Tomshardware had a decent review of the one I looked at and so did newegg, granted its probably too new for shit to spontaneously break on it like what happened with BRR's.

Yes plank I would love to get a Macbook, but the 13in doesn't have an option for a 7200 rpm HD and only 4GB max memory. To get a comparably equipped one I would need a 15in Macbook Pro and those are starting at close to 2200.

BRR, how long did you have yours before all that stuff happened?

Yes Smurf I'm a tech guy, I work in IT but building PC's and such started as a hobby.

Going with the ASUS N61JQ-X1 What I like about it: * USB 3.0 certified - capable of up to 5GB/s transfer speed * ATI 5730 graphics card capable of DX11 which will be used in the coming years on the i7 chipset * Intel i7 core * 8-in-1 card reader for all the pics and video i take of the little man Mostly going to use it for picture and video editing so I'm happy with everything on this model and its fairly future proof, guessing about 5 years without feeling its completely inferior. The parts that I can upgrade later would be the hard drive to solid state once prices drop. With USB 3.0 and 5GB/s transfer rates an external blu ray burner for all the HD Video once prices drop will work fine. I can jump from 4GB to 8GB in ram later too. All that for right around $1k is a good deal I think, newegg has it priced at $1049.00 If I equipped a 15in Macbook Pro to be identical it would cost me more than double, plus I can't really upgrade components as easily. I'd like to switch to Mac but I'm more a do-it-yourselfer when it comes to upgrading down the road. I get more for my money.

That's cool, especially the USB 3.0 thing. There aren't even any decent desktop cases with that yet.

No but ASUS has some sick motherboards out now that I could redo my whole desktop setup. With my current mobo i got in 2007 I can still fit an AM2+ Phenom II quad core in it, but the memory is slow at DDR2 800. the USB 3.0 on the laptop would keep me set for a long time as far as external devices to hook up and nothing really takes advantage of the i7 core and DX11 ready GPU card. So that laptop looks good.

Mmmmmm, spring Macbook Pro is switching to Core i7's, if they don't have USB 3.0 then wife said I can get one in the fall...she rocks.

i need a new one, my dell is falling apart. it's been 4 years. by default, we've gone with dell for years.

the only hard and fast requirements are the biggest/highest-res screen possible. dell has a 17.3" Full HD option. i wish screens had advanced more, as my current one is a 17" with higher resolution 1920x1200.

aside from that, at least 4GB RAM (obviously), more if there's a tangible benefit.
