I see what you're saying, how it doesn't have to be complicated, but, to get the absolute best results, you have to make it somewhat complicated, especially when training for athletic pursuits.
CCJ, I think this kind of ties into the thread I wrote earlier about enhancing CNS recovery. When the CNS is replenished, the muscular system is able to work at an elevated rate again.

Sure there isn't rocket scientist stuff in my training, on the surface anyway. But every exercise, weight, set and reps scheme is chosen with all the "correct" things in mind. I can't always make everything "perfect" but I sure try my hardest
Having said that my training isn't based purely on hypertrophy, even then I'm getting a good amount of that.
