For those of you who aren't quite sure how to squat

Reminds me of a catcher going up and down after every pitch. Obviously, he uses squats for quads, but I still think his knees go too far forward.
 
Whats' wrong with knees going forward?! That's how you work your quads! If your knees don't go forward then you have to lean too far forward to keep your balance and hense all hip and lower back stress and minimal quad stress.

If you do squats for athletic performance, you get your knees forward. This is how people jump, and run as well. Hmm Olympic lifters all squat with their knees well over the toes, so do I, and so do most athletes. Our knees are fine thank you very much.

Good point Coolcolj, but I have read in a few places that the farther the knee tracks over the foot, the more stress is placed on the knee. You don't believe this is true? If you do, then couldn't years of squatting like that cause more damage to the knee than, say, slightly wider than shoulder width hips back squats?
 
No. The knee strengthens as you squat, and gets stronger just as your tendons and ligaments do. But you have to gradually build up strength and practise good form. People in a hurry or progress too fast due to steroids etc will have problems of course. Same thing goes for the hips and shoulders actually. You can cure a lot of knee problems by full squatting properly

That old guy above, Clarence bass, has been squatting like that for 50 years, his knees are fine he says. You do nee flexible ankles though.
 
Thanks for the reply Coolcolj, I have been squatting PL style thinking that that is the best way to improve my vert and other athletic things, it seems I might should try Olympic style squats.
