first time with a trainer - what should I ask him?

OK..a friend I work with referred me to her trainer who will give me a reasonable rate :)

I only want to work legs with him...will trainers do this? I would do once, maybe twice a week with him...will this be enough?
Anything in particular I shuld ask him..we are going to meet up tonight to talk before I schedule a session...

For the most part, I want him to teach me proper form...esp on...

(all weighted)

squat and variations
lunges
deadlift and variations
hip extensions

anything else I should include there?
I am already familiar with the leg press, leg extension, calf raises, adductor machines..etc.

anything else??

thanks so much for any suggestions :)

hopefully this person has a clue, ask him to teach you squats, front squats, stiff legged dead lifts ( and normal deadlifts if you like for when you do back day) see if he knows the difference between a bodybuilder squat and a powerlifting squat..and to show you both of them...

I don't think it would be a problem to do only legs with him. I only do legs 1X per week... but I am a very easy gainer & had lots of muscle there just from aerobics & rollerblading! If you're a hard-gainer you might want 2X per week.

I would just get a feel for his style. For example, a friend of mine that I trained with - I complained to him how bad I felt that I had been eating candy that day & he says, "Don't worry about it. It's no big deal, you'll burn it off in the gym." He didn't mean this as a one-time thing, but as a daily habitual thing - don't worry about indulging in junk.
OK, so 1. he has no clue about a HUGE factor in BodyBuilding
2. He's too laid back for my style!

I personally want someone who is intense & hard-core like me, but who is also smart enough to *explain* to me what I need to know. His knowledge is only as good as his ability to communicate it to you! I would think you'd get a feel for his style & communication abilities just chatting with him a bit about training in general.

For this one particular purpose, you could probably retain him for just a few sessions and maybe go back every 6 weeks for a change in routine. You might want to check yourself -- when there is someone standing there while you are sweating, do you need them for their spotting ability, their ability to check your form or to have them babysit you?

My pet peeve is working w/ a trainer - then you feel like you have to make small talk or something w/ them and its so easy to just start bitching about the diet, the workout, etc. It also bugs me when they start counting and then "make" you do more than you really want to. Like it interrupts your rhythm.

Oh well -- maybe I just have too many issues about people telling me what to do....

But make sure the guy is giving you the info and the help you want. Sometimes guy trainers will let girls off real easy - which annoys me. And they will also not give you a straight answer as to why you should do this or that - and then if you say, "well I've tried this or so-and-so suggested that -- why is this better than that?" Then they say stuff like "Just do this -- the other one doesnt' work" or start bashing the person you got your info from - e.g. " Well most people dont' have the right experience / can only train themselves / etc etc etc."

You're paying the person -- they should respond to YOU not you respond to THEM.

well..this guy works out of a serious weightlifting gym, and from what my friend says he works ya to death...

we shall see :)
