Fatting question

Hey all,
I heard that when you gain weight (when you get fat) not only you increase the size of your fat cells but also you increase the number of them, but when you lose weight you just decrease the size of the fat cells. Meaning, it's getting harder and harder to lose weight.
Is it true?
Bye.

From another bulletin board (I didn't write this). April 29 was the date of the post if anyone wants to look up the article.
There was just the most interesting article in the LA Times today. All these years, I figured you had a designated amount of fat cells. Period.

Well, science has found the those little suckers actually do die off, albeit a very slow death. But, they "reproduce" much quicker. The fat cells can only get so fat, so, once your cells reach that point, new ones pop up. The article said 50-100lbs or more overweight, overeating for a month or more and the little suckers
reproduce more. Guess they don't want to get to fat themselves..LOL.

Also, a fat cell, from ANYBODY is very unlikely to weight less than 0.3 to 0.4 microgram. That's when weight loss tends to plateau, once the cells reach that weight. AND they say, that's why Dieters may still look larger than perpetually skinny people because they've got MORE fat cells.

One more thing. Scientists have also learned that if you transplant fat from one region to another, the fat remembers where it's from. They found that out by grafting from a mans belly to his hand. When the man gained weight, a little fat
pocket appeared on his hand where the graft was.

Hey! Just think. If the plastic surgeons used belly fat for breast implants or to plump up the lips, whenever we gained weight, our lips or boobs would grow proportionately. That could be pretty funny.

funk4, I think the belief that fat cells don't die was refuted some years ago, but lots of folks (including docs) still believe it. See this link: http://www.abc.net.au/rn/talks/8.30/helthrpt/stories/s20847.htm

When I was looking this up online, I kept finding the "fat cells don't die" stuff being professed by lots of plastic surgeons who do liposuction, as in: "You can't decrease the number of fat cells you have, so let us suck them out!"

Thanks.
You gals are the best. I have posted this question on other boards, but yours is the most serious reply I got. Thanks.

Well, about that, I wouldn't expect them to say otherwise, after all they do need to eat, don't they :D :D :D
