Want to Lose Tummy Fat? Do This!

Women who want to flatten their stomachs should lift weights instead of doing aerobic exercise, such as running. Reuters reports that a new study conducted by the University of Alabama shows that women lose even more abdomen fat than men as a result of resistance training using weights. This is especially true for elderly women. While lifting weights doesn't seem to help men lose fat from their guts, it does help them lose total fat mass. And both men and women can increase their strength by a similar amount when they lift weights.
Seeing old folks in the weight room at the gym may not be a common sight--but it should be. Previous studies have shown that resistance training can help the elderly improve their ability to take on everyday physical tasks, as well as increase their metabolism and food consumption, which in turn ups their intake of needed vitamins and nutrients. "The group that would benefit the most from resistance training is, I think, older adults," Dr. Gary R. Hunter of the University of Alabama told Reuters. Too much tummy fat not only looks bad, it also has been linked to diabetes, heart disease, and an increased risk of death. And get this: Researchers at the University of Wisconsin at La Crosse have determined that one session of weight lifting can increase metabolism for the next 48 hours. After aerobic exercise, metabolism returns to normal in just 30 minutes.
