Want to Lose Tummy Fat? Do This!

By Cathryn Conroy, Netscape News Editor
Women who want to flatten their stomachs should lift weights instead of doing aerobic exercise, such as running. Reuters reports that a new study conducted by the University of Alabama shows that women lose even more abdomen fat than men as a result of resistance training using weights. This is especially true for elderly women. While lifting weights doesn't seem to help men lose fat from their guts, it does help them lose total fat mass. And both men and women can increase their strength by a similar amount when they lift weights.

Seeing old folks in the weight room at the gym may not be a common sight--but it should be. Previous studies have shown that resistance training can help the elderly improve their ability to take on everyday physical tasks, as well as increase their metabolism and food consumption, which in turn ups their intake of needed vitamins and nutrients. "The group that would benefit the most from resistance training is, I think, older adults," Dr. Gary R. Hunter of the University of Alabama told Reuters. Too much tummy fat not only looks bad, it also has been linked to diabetes, heart disease, and an increased risk of death. And get this: Researchers at the University of Wisconsin at La Crosse have determined that one session of weight lifting can increase metabolism for the next 48 hours. After aerobic exercise, metabolism returns to normal in just 30 minutes.

Wow. Maybe next the media will discover fire, or perhaps the wheel.

Actually it is nice to see this. It is so rare that the media gets anything close to correct.

One thing I kinda don't like about my gym is that it doesn't have much of a "muscle" ambiance, but it is heartening to see the old folks in there plugging away!

Arioch lifts at your gym? He's always hogging the Smith Machine isn't he?

First off, the Smith machine is eternally ridiculed around here, I can't fathom that changing any time soon.

Second - why learn to do something WRONG in the first place, then go learn to do it right later after you have "Perfected" the wrong technique?

Just use a VERY light bar - you can even use a 'body bar' - that we use in aerobics classes - padded & weighing 8, 12, or 15#. Descend slowly so you're sure not to lose balance - you'll be fine.
