Hey Everybody,

What is considered excercise addiction I was talking with a gentleman at my gym we got into conversation about excercise and he is pretty built... well it lead into questions first he said he sees me at the gym alot oh annnd How much is your bodyfat?? I was like
20-25 % he said noooo and how do I know? Did I have it tested in water.... k my bad I have never had it tested
I go by my clothes the mirror
Now this MAN is a teacher of what I don't know
He said "Why do you wear baggie clothes?"
Im self conscience but I didn't tell him that LOL...
"your not fat you look lean" "your tall" Im 5'7.. "don't compare yourself to the people in mags: .... "they have had plastic Surgey" ect....I was like I know
He then said when he takes off from he comes back stronger I said to him I was thinking of taking a recovery week next week just cardio to at least let him know Im not a total idiot...
Anyway sorry to keep going on butt... I told him when it's you and the mirror naked you know what you look like ..
I totally feel he is telling me I may have a problem
Any advise would help since It seems like alot of people have opinions at the gym.....

Thanks CC

Hmmm..... well, I only take a week off at a time and I have no set time of taking breaks. It usually happens either when I get sick or before a big speed skating meet (which only happens about 3 times a year). I lift 4 days a week, cardio twice a week, so only one day off per week, from any form of exercise. I probably only take a week off from exercise about 3 times a year (best guess). But I also know I don't overtrain or as some like to call it, under recover. I get plenty of sleep and I eat well. So I really think it is up to you whether YOU think you have a problem or not. As long as your exercising isn't affecting you NEGATIVELY, then I don't see a problem. Hope this helps. :)

My theory do not worry what other people think.....or say.....I have nothing against good ol criticism etc...but you know yourself and what you are doing best..they are on the outside looking in...Dont stress over some guy in the gym and his opinions...If your workouts are excessive and you feel it is hurting you in some way...then yes you have a problem...being in the gym is not a bad thing...you do not need to be in the hours to get results so remember that. You take care of you and let him worry about himself and his issues.

the interesting thing about getting the results you want from diet & training is that you have to be consistent with it over a relatively long period of time. So if you do your training in the gym, you're gonna be in the gym on a regular basis. People don't ask if you have a "work addiction" because you go to a certain place to complete your work-related activities. You certainly can't diet selectively on a few random days every couple weeks, so why should going to the gym be any different? If I happened to rollerblade every morning people wouldn't ask if I was addicted to it. I would just do it because I enjoy it, it gets me out, its invigorating, gets my heartrate up, helps reduce stress & generally clears out the cobwebs. Going to the gym is the same, at least for me.

The time they say something becomes an addicition in a negative way is when it inhibits your ability to get done the things you need to get done. If you are not getting results for your time in the gym, assuming your diet is not the problem, then change your approach in the gym, or try something different for a while.

The one serious thing part of the equation that people often forget is the recovery time. Then it might be time to open your view of what you are trying to achieve by goign to the gym - make your time in there matter by making your time out matter.

Frankly when I go home to visit my family, my mom gets upset at me because I like to go to the gym every day. Interestingly she doesnt' seem to realize that my time in the gym is no different than the 5 mile walk she & my dad take every morning and the step class they go to at the local YMCA every day at noon. Except I just don't like step classes & I dont' like doing that 5 mile walk in -20 degree weather. (My blood has thinned out too much -- they live in MN, I moved south 15 years ago...)

BTW CrystalChick - that guy has to be in the gym at least as much as you are to make the observation "You are in here a lot" .... is he addicted??

To me, exercise addiction is when you're overtraining but won't allow yourself to rest, and you don't enjoy training anymore. If you're feeling good, making progress, and enjoying your workouts, you don't have a problem.

It sounds like this guy at your gym has a problem. For starters, he has bad manners asking what your bodyfat is and then challenging your answer. (Did he volunteer his you-know-what's size? :D ) Your choice of training attire is none of his business either, and it was rude of him to comment on it.

You know the old saying about opinions, right? It's doubly true for opinions in the gym: "Opinions are like assholes. Everyone has one, and most of them stink."
