Dubai - a world outside the rest

A good story to help people understand the economy of Dubai as well as what Dubai is all about at the moment

Property: Dubai here I come

Bright young things are building a life amid the glitzy malls, towers and beaches of a city on the up, says Anna Tyzack

It is the tower to trump all others. Soaring more than half a mile out of the desert, Dubai's latest skyscraper was unveiled to the public on the day the FTSE sank to an all-time low. The Nakheel Tower, which comfortably eclipsed all rivals at last week's Cityscape property showcase, will dwarf the current record-holder, the 800m Burj Dubai. International investors, eager to buy off-plan property in the city's newest developments, gasped as the £22 billion project was revealed.

"The market here is still growing fast," says Manal Shaheen, of Nakheel, Dubai's most prolific developer. "The effect of the economic crisis is going to be very minimal."

The city is often compared to New York at the beginning of the 20th century: a metropolis in the making; a place of opportunity and vision. Except it is also a tax haven and has guaranteed sun all year round. "Everyone here is competing to build the biggest, or the tallest," says Alex Delmar-Morgan, a 27-year-old London journalist who moved to Dubai three weeks ago to work for Arabian Business.

Alex is one of an increasing number of young British expats being kept awake by the sound of cranes through the night. He enjoys the buzz of living in the world's fastest-growing city: "It's exactly how I imagined it to be - it's kitsch," he says. "But it's a chance to live in a new place and progress up the career ladder more quickly. And I can have cocktails on the beach after work."

Continued in the link...

Not immune to the global crisis but very much limited to the impact - it's business as usual.

LOL - not welcome? They make up 75% of the population and it's what's building the country. I don't know where you heard that from.

I would like to have some dubai tang! As long as it isn't hairy...
Just thinking

I want a Villa in one of those islands!

I don't think the article is completely correct. My old boss lives there now and said the economy came to a screeching halt.

He loved it because he said all the bad traffic and polution cleared up.

It is a petro$$ economy and as the price of oil goes, so does it.

i have no desire to visit/live in a hot ass desert surrounded by 8th century suffocating religious dogma

I would rather live on the moon. And westerners will be welcome until they're not needed anymore. And if you're a woman you'd better have some pedigree before you go there........like have some important people back home that would raise a stink if you go missing. Otherwise you might find yourself being whored out to the rich sheiks against your will. They only respect muslim women. They have no compunction treating non muslim women like 3rd string humans.

it's not only this but the fuggin desert maing, sucks balls.
if it's anything like southern nevada desert, that reason alone would keep me out.

I love Dubai, all these skyscrapers cuz the royals are bored adn need to spend m oneyh, and foreign contractors are more than happy to build it for them! ($)

Too bad after created, they sit empty. Cuz dubai has no middle class and no flourising capitalism of saudi office workers to fill those skyscrapers. Most are poor and uneducated.

This article was written by someone interested in selling property in Dubai.

Some facts in this article seem very dubious:
First-phase signature villas on Palm Jumeirah sold off-plan for £719,000 within 72 hours in 2002 and are now re-selling for as much as £7million.
Believe that if you want. The Dubai property market is non-transparent, you don't know and won't find out who owns what, how much they own and are trying to sell, what their financial position is, etc.

As far as living there, well if you do, you better live within the laws of that land:

b0und (NOT buying property in Dubai)

The best purpose of dubai is throwing your money there. NO ONE will fuck with SA in terms of demanding account names or anything (like they're trying now with Switzerland). Why do you think haliburton and so many companies are based in Dubai. :)

Wanna put your $10M in a Dubai bank? Why Hello sir, right this way. We own your President so don't worry America won't do shit.

Imagine how much the IRS would freak the fuck out, if joe cheeseburger started depositing his earnings in a Saudi bank. :)

meh, cardinal was a good guy but he was a american basher, so no wonder why he finds comfort in a inhospitable desert country surrounded by 7th century religious fanatcisim.

It has to be fun to have enough Money so Dubai is even an option. :)
