Things would be much worse if it weren't for Barry's first round of stimulus funding.

that's his story and he's sticking to it

Oil in the gulf would have been much worse if he hadn't bee in charge too!

And does this mean we'd all be wearing towels praying five times a day toward Mecca had is not been for Bush?

I spoke to an HR guru two days ago and here's what she told me. The health insurance caps (when you can kick someone off your plan because they've hit an expense limit) will be removed shortly. So now, instead of a 30,000/year employee (or their spouse) costing you a million or two million dollars then coming off your plan, they can now cost you indefinitely. Obviously you can't fire them, but their business unit or department can be outsourced. So with the cap in the old day, employers considered those costs (up to the cap) as one-time expenses and not part of the going concern. Now, those costs can last forever. So now, employers are going to have to subdivide their businesses into smaller units and when one lifetime medical employee kicks-in, they either have to eat the new cost or jettison the entire group to outsourcing.

The unintended consequences of this will be incredible.

Still should be a way in there that I could scheme a check or two along with some free xannies from Uncle Sugar before the collapse.

just sayin'

We should legalize pot and tax the shit out of it for more revenues, build the world's biggest, natural resource harnessing, energy producing, structure, get into a global war, then win that war.

Why didn't the gov't bail out banks in the Great Depression? They just let them close if they couldn't stay open. The free market ran it's course without interference. Someone came along and started doing it better. Sure, a lot of people went through hell back then, but we came out of it stronger than ever.

Fucking government always digging more and more into the private sector. You'd think we could look at history (ours and that of other countries) and see what didn't work and try to learn from that. Fucking self serving politicians, whoring themselves out to special interest groups more than willing to line the pockets of those politicians, and the coddled generations of whining liberals we've been raising with their instant gratification, entitlement attitudes, all holding their hands out, wanting what they feel they deserve but haven't earned.

We're doomed.

pfffffffft! @ "double dip" ... whatever happened to 3 peats? fucking underachieving administration!

Close corprate tax holes while loweing the corporate tax rate from 35% to 15%.

Revenue problem solved.

Is there a ?double-dip? recession on the way? | The Columbus Dispatch

We blew our stimulus money. Unemployment just got worse. Bush tax cuts set to expire end of this year. Now we've got healthcare "reform" costs beginning to kick in.

Boys and girls, I believe we're going down again.

And the recovery will be jobless either way.

it's inevitable...housing is still down and will stay that way for a very long time (it still hasn't reached the bottom yet in many areas imho)...manufacturing has been doing well for several quarters now but, as soon as the auto manufacturer's and others have their parts bins filled, it's gonna come to a screeching halt the next day...then things are going to get real "fun".

I feel sorry for anyone who thinks we've seen the worst of it yet. Wake up! Almost everyone I know, owes more on their house than it's worth, and their bosses probably owe more on whatever their business is, than it's worth or making. Until Americans learn what their priorities ought to be, and until everyone decides that they can live within their means, the second wave of the recession (aka DEPRESSION), will just get bigger and bigger as it looms up ready to crash down on all of us. Who decided that it's cool to take out a mortgage and buy cars, boats and plasma TVs? I think it's better to be a nerd without debt. Maybe there's a reason why many multimillionaires drive beat-up cars, and shop at K-Mart or the Salvation Army store, and watch TV on a 40-year-old set that still works perfectly well. Reverse logic perhaps?

To avoid a double-dip, is going to hurt, and HURT BAD! And I don't think the American public is willing to take that pain voluntarily. Certainly not the Leftys. Oh my God! Curses!!!! Cutting baby welfare? NO NO!!!! They won't hear of it. Get real and cut baby welfare along with all other social programs, cut small business taxes, and watch the jobs come flooding back in. Very simple, yet so impossible with Pelosi and the Obama klan in power. The longer the standoff, the harder and deeper the fall. Ask the Romans.

Let me just make myself clear on that small business tax issue: Here is an example; one of our ranch workers makes $10.25/hr on full time payroll (he's our only fulltimer left). Married with two small children. He takes home $7/hr, and WE PAY $21.80/HR including payroll tax, disability tax, federal employment taxes, workers' comp, and a whole bunch of little fees and taxes that I can't even list!!!!!! The employer pays more than DOUBLE what the pay rate is for the worker, PLUS the worker loses about 25% of that, if he/she's married. That's what the problem is. Now a simple fact: If it cost us $12 or so, to have a $10/hr worker, I guarantee you I'd hire another one tomorrow morning! And if the taxes or workers comp insurance goes up another nickel, I'm going to have to let that worker go on part-time. Fact #2: In 2006, we had 4 workers on payroll, and it cost us only slightly more than twice what our one full-timer costs us now. That's a net increase in employment taxes, fees and workers' comp, of about 100% in 4 years. Don't dare complain to me that avocados are up about 2% since 2006.

yep. just look what happened to russia after a war with afghan

I was more thinking about a period in our own, US history during the 1930's and 1940's.

glad to see there's at least a few bro's in here who understand what the "real" problem is in this country instead of the traditional finger pointing at one ideology or another. The govt. isn't responsible for what we're in....we are. We got suckered into an economic pyramid scheme by people who were interested in how much they could get by tommorrow and not what's good for our whole society in the long run. This isn't a democrat vs. republican thing as some very predictable tools are crow hopping around trying to sell us on the old paradigms.

There would have had to be a rise for there be a "double dip". Only thing that ever improved was the DOW average.

I completely agree with that. Our current (and fading) recovery was a media-created phenomenon.

Businesses are paralyzed. Everyone is focused on how they're going to deal with increased taxes, increased health care costs, increased regulation and possibly increased energy costs. There's no way any sane person would create a job right now.

so why did you then write "double dip recession" if you completely agree with RW?

Because the stock market partially recovered and technically GDP grew for at least a quarter or two. On paper, we were in recovery.

But it's a jobless recovery and job prospects are going to be much more bleak going forward.

Any sort of recovery means shit if the jobs arent there. The whole point of economic recovery is to create jobs and lower the unemployment rate.

so it was all "media driven" then?

The media spun the recovery even as it was obvious that it wasn't happening.

There are many examples, but here's one from last month: The gym I go to plays CNN in the free weight section and I'm stuck watching it. They touted jobs growth last month when they knew good and well that 400,000+ of those jobs were census workers. All they played were stories on how great those 400,00 jobs were and how we've turned the corner.

AHA!! So now you know how it feels to have to endure Glen Becks hystrionics while I"m running.

anyway, I saw those reports and most of them stated flatly that these were not career jobs being created but the result of govt. stimulus. It may not sound impressive to us but I'm sure those 400,000 workers appreciated the part time work and some of that money did filter it's way back into the economy...you realize that right?

Any sort of recovery means shit if the jobs arent there.

That.

We didn't recover any jobs, so there was no recovery. I don't give a shit about at what number stocks are trading (and no one else should either). Most of that is speculation anyway, not real value.

Then you can write off a recovery while Barry is in office. No competent manager should create a job while he's running around villianizing business.

old and tired....you can write off a recovery no matter who's in office. This is fundamentally a societal problem....but let's not trivialize the role large corporations played in this downfall. Yes we let them talk us into shit we shouldn't have....but in the end they "were" the swindlers who sweet talked us into a lifestyle that could not be sustained.

Are you implying we should just stay in this recession to avoid major corporations taking us into shit we shouldn't have?

we need to fundamentally change our society so that we can have a "true" free market....but that's a little too much too soon I'm afraid, baby steps.

We get out of this recession by creating our way out of it. We used to be a creative people that knew how to take care of themselves, and yes we've lost that to "big corporations" who we want to spoon feed us everything. Hence we've become fat and lazy.

Yeah, it's gotta be corporation's fault.

It sure can't be the fault of an ever-expanding government that over taxes, over spends, and over regulates. And our nationalized school systems, health care (medicare/medicaid) and retirement programs (social security) have been real winners too.

Unemployment usually peaks 12-18 months after a recession ends. Every recovery throughout history has begun as a "jobless recovery." It's just the way it works and nothing to think too much about in terms of predicting whether or not we'll enter a double dip.

This recession was a little deeper so it'll probably take a little longer. If the recession ended late last year as most people agree it did, unemployment will remain high for another 6-8 months. That doesnt mean that were not in a recovery, even though the main component driving the recovery is government spending (but again, thats usually the way it works after a recession).

exactly and it lasted a longer while.

the ISM is >50 meaning we are in a recovery

there is no evidence of a double dip unless that number goes to under 50. its the most accurate and current number you can look at.

anyone who LMAO uses the unemployment rate to judge where the economy is needs to learn economics 101. when we went into the recession in late 2007 the unemployment rate was under 5%. and when we went into the 2001 recession it was 4%. when we came out of the 2001 recession the unemployment rate kept going up until 2003, then started slowly dropping.

its a horrible number to look at to make an arguement and anyone who uses it like i said above has a lot to learn

bottom line is what determines if we are in a recession or not is GROWTH PERIOD. not unemployment rate.

PS i highly recommend those of you who think we are in a recession to invest 35 bucks a month in briefing.com and look at the actual numbers. then come back and make an arguement

I'm out

companies invest in each others equities so yes it makes a difference if the markets are going up. its a ripple effect.

plus companies use their own stocks to raise money which is then used to grow their companies ie. hiring more people, opening more offices/locations etc.

so absolutely it helps that the markets are up so much

Once again 75th is keeping it real.

75th actually knows some stuff about economic and shit.

And the right wingers won't be happy for the US to recover with a democrat in office, some patriots they are.

b0und ( )

I have my moments.

Hence the reason unemployment is referred to as a "lagging indicator."

Companies don't fire people the day a recession begings and don't start hiring the day a recession ends.

I think it's obvious that, to a certain extent, the republicans are hoping the economy doesn't recover prior to the November elections. There's really no rational explanation for them stonewalling on unemployment benefits. I understand and to a certain extent agree that we desperately need to watch our spending, but the fact is that for every dollar of unemployment benefits given out it generates $1.30 back into the economy, making it the most efficient use of our resources at this point in time.

Good info 75, but I'm aware of all that already. I have a different definition of economic health than the one economists use though. I think most people would agree that what the population experiences as recession is the availability/security of jobs and their confidence in the economy as evidenced by their willingness to take perceived financial risks. If you don't get the trickle down, then we are still hurting every bit as much.

that strategy is used every election but i really dont think it ever works.

consumer confidence is perhaps an even worse indicator then unemployment. i can again back this with facts.

in 2001 going into the recession it was at 170, coming out it was at 100. and kept dropping more for 2 more years before slowly rebounding.

going into the 2007 recession consumer confidence was at 120 which was higher then it was in 2003 when it was at just 60.

the point is its a horrible indicator and very very very lagging. we are talking 2 years of lag. so the current recession ended in late 2009 and it is conceivable confidence will continue to drop until 2011 then rebound. by then the recovery will be full blast and when it peaks is when we may enter another recession.

so if you do the opposite of how people are feeling you can really do well in your business. this is how warren buffet runs his companies. he hires at the lows, and fires at the highs.

this is why restaurants fail at such a high rate. when things are good they keep hiring and expanding, then when things get bad they are screwed. the successful restaurant chains do the opposite. brinkers, darden, etc.

bottom line is if you are good at what you do i dont care if you go into a depression, recession, recovery whatever. you will be successful no matter what.

people who worry about the economy like this are people who are helpless who need someone to hand them a job. go create your own job, thats the only way to live. you wont find me working for someone EVER. been working for ME since i was 19. thats the only way to live.

PS my company is HIRING. our problem is we cant find people who aren't on drugs/alcohol or who aren't negative losers. usually the same people who whine how bad things are.

And unemployment benefits delay a person making tough choices like taking a lesser paying job, relocating, leArning new skills, etc. Etc.

If it were a clean 1.30 multiplier, we could just issue every unemployed person a few stacks of 100 dollar bills and be done with this recession.

Sounds like Pelosi arithmetic to me. Wanna buy a nice piece of land with an ocean view in Montana? You pick the house in Montana, and I'll hang a mural of the Pacific on the outside of the window for you.

The other fact is, that the employers and employees are being smothered by paying into the unemployment insurance, and taxes. And believe me, as a republican, I'm not the least bit worried we'll seen any recovery during Saint Obama's regim. No need to stall anything.

Charles

Maybe we can just set the minimum wage to 100,000 per year and offer unlimited unemployment benefits. Then we'd never have another recession ever!

This prosperity thing is easy as long as you are using other people's money.

I have two jobs, does that make me greedy in this market?

I'm searching for another part-time job, does that make me greedy too? Oivey, should I quit looking and just go back to school and live on student loans until things get better while I go deeper into debt? Makes me shudder...

Double dip, I can see it happening based on what you all are saying, but I think this is a good lesson of austerity for those of us who will survive it fine. It feels great getting rid of junk I don't need, not going out just to satisfy my hunt and gather instinct, and really paying attention to my numbers in my wallet a lot more. Now, government has to do that too. I'm so tired of hearing about waste. On the street level I am seeing my fellow Americans getting away from our nation's hording instinct and I couldn't even give my junk away for free where as a couple of years ago people bought stuff just to HAVE it and I imagined they had to pay for storage just to keep it. It's a good time to make us lean and mean, we just didn't need mother nature to add to it unneccesarily. I feel for the gulf coast folks.

From a maternal pov, I just worry for the rise in abuse of all sorts as people get under unmanagable stress. Otherwise for many of us, it's a good wake up call to live more wisely and appreciate the jobs we do have.

As for bosses not finding good workers, why is it the young pretty dumb bimbos can always find a job? (I'm dumb for asking- the answer is obvious.) One tried to give us back $10 over in change. Who gets hired is altogether another thread though...

Enjoy your depression bitches - it's only gonna get worse! Don't worry, paper pushing jobs on wall st are safe. So relax. YES WE CAN!

Sounds like Pelosi arithmetic to me.

It was a Stanford study. As far as government spending to stimulate the economy is concerned, it beats infrastructure spending all to hell.

So we should all go on unemployment so the economy can grow by 30%?? Something does not add up on your calculation there.

When the alternative is allowing 17-20% of the population (aka the real unemployment rate when you consider some folks have stopped looking for jobs and can no longer draw benefits) to have no income and therefore spend no money then increasing or extending unemployment benefits is the most efficient method to stimulating growth in the economy.

Naturally it doesnt assume that everyone would quit and mooch off the gubment.

dont forget government jobs rob, those are safer than ever.

I'm sure those who voted Obama are kicking ass right now! And since the polls show huge support still for Obama, things must be pretty good. I ignore all this wah wah recession crap. Things are awesome!

That's definitely true.

Infrastructure Waste < Consumer Spending < More $$$ in the hands of capital deployers

So an even better idea is to lower capital gain taxes (even to zero) or lower corporate tax rates.

but that would mean giving all the middle aged, bald, greedy, fat, white men a tax break. and you know gutdamn well we just cant do that.

It's probably for the best. They'd probably just waste it on stocks, bonds or foolish PPE expenses.

It's pretty obvious that plunkey has a wee little pee boner for a corporate handout....which is ok of course. Unemployment benefits.....not so much.

Just imagine -- if you someday got a job, you'd be eligible for unemployment benefits!

Somehow, I don't think that's going to entice you to put down the bong and try to contribute to society.

How's that killer internship coming?

LOL, I haven't had a paycheck in 2 years since I started school and I haven't drawn one cent of unemployment nor have I taken out a dime for student loans. Does that tell you anything monkey boy?

Say it ain't so!

If your "e" game picks up I'm thinking Plunkey's cawk next

You are really getting him excited.

Take it down a notch or he'll ruin his keyboard reading your posts. If he can't spring $11 for a plat membership and that killer internship isn't paying the big bucks, how would he ever replace it?

In how many languages can I say no...??

Your game is embarrassing, always has been. Someone your age isn't going to roll it out anyhow so quit tryin so hard nigger.

Oh, I know it embarasses you. And I'm ok with that.

It's my self appointed job on EF. Cartman hates hippies. I berate useless libtards who do nothing but act as a drain on society.

In a word..yes, corporations are definitely to blame in part for where we're at. But final repsonsability is with us. Corporations are like drug pushers, if there was no demand for that which has sapped us of our creative spirit...then they wouldnt' provide it. Our current market is simply a mirror of us....."us" being a society that has become stagnant and stale. Grown fat and greedy off past victories. Corporations are just another form of big govt...and infact they are symbiotic with our current form of govt. as they are what drive the rules and regulations which keep them in at the top of their industry and in effect, squelches the true free market.

here's my last post in this thread and "back on topic" for just a moment.......

But this thread, if it is to go on...should really get back on track as there probably is important stuff to talk about. And recognize that I'm saying that about a thread that I am fully aware was originated by you. So how bout we call it off in this one.

Yup.

This is another one of those "lets stay on topic" pleas after he's talked himself into a corner.

I still want to hear about this killer unpaid internship.

go ahead, point out the corner I talked myself into. There's no corner....all I would like to do is consolidate threads. This little poodle barking at me and forcing a running conversation between multiple threads is getting irritating. There's no corner you can talk me into nor ever have. There's threads where you can nip at my heels all you want and then there's threads where we should probably let it go lest at some point I imagine the higher up here will get sick of it and ban us both.
