Does It Really Make Sense To Work On Legs? Let's Discuss really

curling

New member
Everybody always tells people to work on legs from pics shown on the board. Why? What is such a big deal about legs? Who cares?

Face it with the shorts being long almost like pants now there really is no sense in doing legs. They are alot of work and take time away from other muscle groups you could be working on that show. I mean how does having big legs help you get chicks at the beach, pool or lake since the chicks can't see all your hard work.

Well curling you say what about when the clothes come off hmmm? Well by then I don't think a chick is going to look at you legs and say, "oohh those are skinny legs I am not going to do you now." I just don't think that would happen. If it did, its probably because the middle leg is skinny if you know what I mean. :D

You should work you calves however because you can see those or if you're in competition you should work legs. But if you are into bodybuilding to be buff(not to compete), why waste the time on your legs when you could focus on upper body instead where it can be noticed and not hidden by long ass shorts. Now of course if shorts actually become "short" again then you need to do the damn old hard ass squats but until then...Why?

Btw I do legs but I don't like it and I really personally think it's stupid but I still do them.

Well what do you dudes think? Are you saying, "Curling this is another one of your bizarre comments and you are full of it" or "maybe ole Curling has got a point on this" Hmmm?

Here's why I was always told to suck it up and go all out on leg day. First, exercises like squats (especially), stiff-legged deads, etc. make your whole damn body grow. I've heard guys say that doing heavy all-out squats can actually transform your body type from a middle-weight to a heavy-weight.
Also, working your legs causes more testosterone secretion than working other body parts which = more growth.
I suspect that's just scratching the surface.
There are quite a few guys at my gym who never work legs and I assure you that they look ludicrous. There's also probably some health reasons involved which make striving for some degree of symmetry important (like how working your chest too much and back not enough causes slouching and terrible posture).

Curling I don't know ya but you may have a point. I was shopping for some jeans today (Diesel) and when I tried them on, although they were my correct waist and leg size they were too damn tight around the thighs. As a result they made me look mincey. The only way around it is by buying jeans with a bigger waist, but then the side effect is longer legs, which will need tailoring, and the need to wear a belt (uncool this summer). And think how better our calves would be if we spent the extra time working them instead of those dangerous squats..... And when I squat HEAVY I need 2 full days off b4 I can train anything again.
I don't know I'm in a quandry now. But think how it looks to other lifters when you see a good upper body skinny legs in the shower, you think: c***! He'd never have that upper body if he done his legs too the wimp!
Damn it, I'm gonna carry on and squat 'til I drop.

If you just want beach muscles...don't work legs. If you want to look proportioned and symmetrical work legs. Personally I think the guys who don't work legs look fucking ridiculous. And in the back of their minds they know it.

LC:angel:

Dad gum Nathan, those are some pretty good reasons.

But I take in enough test through the ole pin that the little my legs output probably don't matter much ;) . The symmetry doesn't matter because like I said you can't ever see it.

As far as chest and back I do those equally so they stay symmetrical.

what women want.

well, this post should actually be directed to the women. do not assume that we don't care, because we do. many times we discuss men having no asses and chicken legs. how attractive is a man with a well developed upper body, and the legs of a 13 year old boy? it's not! i have been looking at all of the pictures on this sight, and most are of just the upper body, who cares. any man can achieve a developed upper body, but a man that has developed his lower body too, well that is an achievement to be proud of. only men with no lower body would take the opinion of this post because it takes too much work and training, and the easier way out would be to screw it. isn't most of a human's muscle in the lower half of the body? i am just personally sick of having thicker, and better developed legs than most men in my gym, and i am just lucky to find a man that cares a great deal about his legs and they are huge, even the third one. just think, maybe if you do train your legs, the third one might grow too. who knows. anyway, train your legs please, it would just make your body more desireable whether you are wearing pants or not (believe me we can tell, you can't hide them).:)

Come on femmuscles,

How can you see legs through long board shorts. Naked sure but through long board shorts no way. And doing legs has nothing to do with the middle leg department and I know you know that. ;)

Like I said I do legs I don't do squats but I do do legs even though I don't like it. But everytime I go to the pool or thelake I can see the results of my upper body and bothers me to no end that no chicks can see my legs though these long shorts. And before you even say it there is no WAY IN HELL I would wear speedos no WAY!!!

HUH??? What happens when the clothes come off? It looks ridiculous. I've seen plenty of guys at powerlifting meets who only bench and some of them look horrible. I've seen guys that had arms that were thicker than their thighs.

There ain't no bitch on this planet thats worth changing my routine for. I love training legs. The most intense fucking 1 hr of the week. I FUCKING LOVE IT!

Only pussywanna bes train just upper body.It takes a real man to get under several hundred pounds and squat to failure. Any idiot can curl and most of them do.

Well like I said hopefully your third leg will do the satisfying then to the chick.

I've seen guys that had arms that were thicker than their thighs.

Man, that would be cool to have your arms that big. :D

The Rat,

Ok you love working legs & some people like having S&M both are simular and your point is you like pain?... ;)

Ya'll want to know why I work legs? I'll tell ya not for the looks but for the extra calorie burn when I am doing nothing. See I know that the bigger the muscles you have the more calories you can burn without doing cardio and as much as I hate doing legs I hate cardio more. :D

Hey is this a flame oh well. Hmmm I really don't want to be a pussy but I definetely want more pussy(does that count as a pussywannabe). :D
And why does a real man need to squat several hundred pounds(screwing up his back in the process)when he can hire a forklift to lift anything that is that heavy sheesh.

Oh and I do other lifts, matter of fact, I like working triceps the best but tricep extentions didn't seem like as good of a user name as "curling" did.

if u want to look like a meatball on stilts, more power to ya. i love training legs, even tho they dont respond that well for me

It wasn't a flame, it was just my opinion. The guys in the gym with fairly big (usually puffy) arms, shoulders and delts look ridiculous when you turn them around and see weak back development, and stick legs, usually have hair but no muscle there.

Curling....by your name I can picture your cartoon character body in my mind and it brings me to a chuckle!!!!!!!

Beach body is fine but there is a line when the upper body is so out of proportion with your lower body that its a joke. Sure, your biceps look good but when the woman your with has better legs than you, you'll realize your error and some will point it out inb laughter.

I personally have more comments by women on my legs than any other part. They already know I am very big upper body wise by my stretching xxl shirts but they are always impressed by my legs in shorts because of guys like you! As long as you keep being a squat scared wuss, you will assist me in keeping more of your ladies' attention.

The really funny thing is I have pushed more of you weak, chicken legged boys around because you think your the shit. strutting in front of the mirror thinking your the a bad ass when I can easily man handle you with one arm because of the strength/balance base built from hard, heavy leg training. When 90% of your strength is up top....you go down very easily.

Ps. You don't have to lift "several hundred pounds messing up your back" as you said, to build good legs. Although I do use what would be considered extremely heavy weights, it just takes work, nothing more.

I think you should forget working out your upper body and work on your brain because you are truly a fucking idiot! It's called balance. If you don't work out legs then you look like an idiot!!:freak: :doublefi:

First of all, I never understood the whole, "I just wanna look good" philosophy anyway. 95% of the guys that start out with that as the driving force for their training end up washed out and quitting. I enjoy looking good too but I also get much more out of my training than that. There's more to it than shallow rewards and trivial consequences.

Go to the gym because you like training.

Go to the gym because you enjoy being the master of your own destiny.

Go to the gym because you enjoy the display of control that's involved in continully suppressing your body's instinct to flee fom pain and discomfort.

Go to the gym to prove yourself.

Go to the gym to validate your existence.

I firmly believe that leg day is the measure of a man in the gym. If you can train legs hard, you can train anything hard. It builds character to develop a pain threshold that's required for serious leg training.

I'm on top of the world after a hard leg workout. Nothing gives me as much satisfaction as knowing that I was able to beat back my animalistic instinct to run from pain as I pounded through gut-wrenching reps of heavy squats. I love getting up for the mental challenge. Tom Platz once said that leg training became an entirely different sport for him...something completetly different from the rest of his bodybuilding pursuits...simply because of the mental preparation they took to train with adeqaute intensity.

I don't understand someone NOT wanting to do legs...

This might not be the exact quote from Dorian, but he made this statement in his book, "Pay more attention to how you train rather how you look and the latter will follow as a matter of necessity." 'Nuff said.

Curling -- all ya gotta train is your left bicep and tricep, so when you drive by the girls see it. Otherwise, there's no real reason to train any other body part.

YOU GIANT PUSSY!!!!

Boy, I wish that were true. Maybe it's just me, tell me guys, but when I squat or do heavy leg presses or deadlifts my cock and balls actually shrink up into my body. They certainly don't get any bigger. I always feel funny getting up from the sled and having to pick my cock out of my abdomen. You know, that sounds really funny. LOL

Curling....you're right. All those chicks that comment on my legs must be wrong. You have showed me the error of my ways. I am going to totally scrap my workout plan and focus on bench press and bicep curls everyday. Hopefully my legs will atrophy and I can achieve that coveted chicken leg look that the girls go crazy for. Thank you for enlightening me. V3

Veni-Vidi-Vici : NICE WHEELS!! damn, I need to get a tan and get cut that looks good brotha. how big are your thighs like about 29"?

Genetiking: very good point
Pump'in'iron: agreed

btw I'm a proud owner of 28.5" thighs and 17.5" calves I only train my legs once every other week, but I'm thinking of going back to every week because of the "challenge"

:p

curling you have got to be kidding.

Maybe you should just stick with bicep curls, and sit ups.

far out......this has GOT to be a joke. Why not spend some time on a chat board trying to pick up chicks.
Cause lifting weights is only about getting chicks.

shit how old are you........my guess is 15

Veni-Vidi-Vici - Excellent Pipes man... well done... curling... picture this guy with skinny undeveloped legs... he would look a tad wierd would he not?

Haha

I always had skinny legs

I would never even consider giving up legs day ever

I also read that it makes your cardioresporitory system anabolic and makes your upper body grow

Lots of people at my gym just do curls and maybe chest, these are the same people that always wear tracksuits and not shorts and then look at me all weird cuz I am sweating like a nutter using the squat rack

anyway

I like the feeling of the soreness in my legs, its damn addictive and not being able to walk properly and almost blacking out when youve just done a set off squats

hehe

Legs seperate boys from men

Personally I like the legs of good old Arnold...

Not too gigantic. but well proportioned compared to rest of his body and cut , veni vidi vici rides some nice wheels also...

having stronger legs can better you other lifts.

Probably the best way of gauging progression is to make sure you are progressing on the three 'big lifts' i.e. SQUATS, deadlifts and benches. If you don't do legs how can you gauge properly?

Having bigger legs make you look better. Like femimuscles said, a lot of girls find big fuggin' quads the best body part on a man.

Curling, you want good calves huh? Squats and leg press do calves quie nicely so when i come to do more direct work on them, all i need is my 1-2 sets and then i can go home, eat, rest and grow.

If you squat heavy then you will realise that the day after, your whole body is sore! Squats = max growth.

Also, the first question a person would ask you if they know you train is 'how much do you bench?' This is a shame because a bench in comparisson to a squat is inferior. Now I'm not saying that squats are best for chest directly, but they will indirectly promote growth, of every muscle and not just pectorals.

Veni-vidi-vici: you look excellent in that picture. Well done for a lot of hard work!
Curling, look at his picture and tell me how much better he would look if he never did his legs?

Exactly...

And the _rat has the right idea!...

So tell me Curling? Are you still gonna do your legs?

Veni -- great legs man.

I think the hormone release that occurs while doing intense squats alone is worth all the pain and agony that we experience while going through legs. Nothing gives me more satisfaction than lying on the ground after and intense leg workout and having one of the regulars from the gym come up to me and say -- "You are fucking nuts man." Legs will test your ability, legs will test your courage, and intense leg days will change your view on life forever.

Tom Platz once said -- "Big chest, big shoulders, big arms . . . don't mean shit unless you got the wheels to carry them on."

Words to live by.

Yeah! I second both Robboe and Max Intensity

Ya cant beat the look of having shorts on with big, well proportioned and cut quads, not huge freaky ones, just well cut and as I said proportioned, like that Veni guys

How many people have that look? Not many, barely any

It is another awesome part of liftin that makes it so worthwhile

You have to go for the whole package or your just another time waster with a weak mind who will fall off the end of the treadmil like most of the others

Besides all that.... (And some very good points made)

Big legs make you STRONG! As in, real life strong. That's part of this whole thing, isn't it?

Anyway, on leg day, if you do my routine, that means you get to deadlift! What more could you ask for? :D

Boy, you just post something slightly out of the norm and WHAMO!

:D

Anyway thanks for all the replies and even some of the flames were funny. Especially the being 15 years old boy I wish. Anyway I "DO" work legs once a week and I usually do them after back which really makes me sick by the time I leave the gym. I call it "Hell" day but I still do it.

My whole point of the post was that it sux that no chicks can see the work that you put out on legs because of the long baggy shorts that are in style now. Maybe in retrospect I should have attacked those(long shorts) instead of attacking doing legs. Maybe the guy that started the long short style didn't like working legs either.

I do sometimes like working them but sometimes there is such a burn when I do them that I can hardly walk afterwards.

Veni those are some big ass sticks you have bro good work! How long have you been working them?

Veni those are some big ass sticks you have bro good work! How long have you been working them?

I've been working them for about two weeks. LOL Seriously I have always worked my legs ever since I first started lifting for sports in high school, I'm 30 now.....you can't be successful in athletics without powerful legs. I look forward to leg day...kinda fun having people stare at you in the gym when you are doing deep squats with 425 for sets of 6-8. V3

I hate leg day. I hate it I hate it I hate it. When I go up to that squat rack I know fear. I'm afraid I won't make it up from my last rep. And then I'll be hurt -- in a bad way. And I know dread. I dread the intense pain my legs are gonna feel for the next 36 hours. And I dread that yet again I'm going to have to suck up every last ounce of my resolve to do those last few reps. That I'm going to have to tap into something very deep inside myself; something I don't let many people see. And that I'm going to be not only physically but emotionally exhausted when I come out the other side of it. And I know that I'm going to wobble around like a drunk for the next day and a half, unable to steady myself, unable to get out of a chair without a concerted effort.
I know I'm going to sweat. I know blood vessels are gonna burst. I know I may puke. I know I'm gonna bounce from fury to exaltation and back again.
You wanna know yourself? You fucking do legs.

i personally look down upon people that don't legs. legs are the largest part muscles in your body man. the body is made to grow equally, you will help your upper body if you work your legs as well. i don't think you are working your legs hard enough... if you were you'd understand

Nothing like the day after leg day when you're walking all funny from the pain. It is pain, but I like it b/c I know I'm going to benefit from it in the long run.

3V: You're absolutely right about leg training and being successful in athletics. When I was a freshmen, just getting into lifting, I didn't train legs very much and wasn't much competition for anyone on the ice physically. Sophomore year I trained them more often and as the pounds got higher on the rack, so did my ability to hit opponents by the end of the year. Junior year I really piled on the weights and my legs are the strongest they've ever been (and getting stronger). Not only can I hit good, but I have the ability to knock down guys that come to hit me.

Going from not being able to hit, dishing out some good ones, to standing up people and hitting them is a big leap in my sport. I like hitting hard so I think I'll stay under that squat rack.

i am happy to see that the majority of the posts are training their legs. i love it! by the way, venti veni you have a beautiful body. believe me men, women love well developed legs and ass on a man. curling, most of the time, we can tell what you are hiding under there no matter how baggy your pants are. remember we are women, and most of us specialize in the art of hiding our flawed body parts, so we can understand how clothes fit and what you probably look like underneath, and be advised when we get the clothes off in the bedroom we are dying inside of laughter when their are two sets of arms instead of one. love all guys that train legs!!!:loveyou:

I back up what GenetiKing said on reasons to go to the gym, but I don't train legs very heavily.

1. I do NOT want to add size to my legs - this will almost definitely result in a loss of kicking speed.
2. Heavy leg work makes it extremely difficult, even impossible, to maintain full flexibility and range of motion.

I train legs for strength only, I don't care how ugly or pretty they look, when I roundhouse kick a guy to the side of the head or drop an axe kick, nobody ever comments "Oh your legs could look better!". It's speed that matters.

45' leg press, leg extension, and calf raise is enough for me - followed by 45 minutes of heavy stretching.

hardgainer (kick)

Since I've been taking legs seriously, it's harder to find good fitting pants and shorts. I have to get the baggy fit because of thigh size. I have to get my suits tailor made. I'm a stripper, so my physique must be complete. Oh yes I hate training the legs, that's my nubain day though. Also there's nothing better than showing off nice calves while wearing shorts.

you're gonna use your biceps to get a chick at the beach, take her home, take out your 'middle leg', and still keep your shorts on??
get real- do the work- get the legs-
chicks DO notice legs!
It's a total turn on to see a guy really sweat it out working legs at the gym- cause we know it's good, hard work
and we can tell how the clothes fit if he's got it or not- don't think you're fooling us.

First, in my opinion the upper legs are the biggest and most powerful in the entire body which also makes them the most visual, whether your wearing long shorts or not.
Also. if there was only one exercise you were allowed to do to train your whole body, the best one would be squats. Doing squats can increase your metabolism and hormone secretion more than any other one exercise. Therefore, if you want to grow bigger, you need to train legs, and on the other hand, if you want to lose weight, you need to train legs. Hard leg workouts benefit the entire body not just the legs and can improve your cardiovascular system. Although its tempting to give the leg workout a miss every now and then, if you bear in mind it's not just the legs that are benefitting but the whole body, you'll find it easier not to miss a leg session.

3V - Awesome set of tree trunks, bud!

And here's my take on anybody that talks about not training legs:

When you try to make excuses for not training legs...
"Nobody sees your legs!"
"You might hurt your back!"
"Your knees will blow out!"
"Girls don't care about legs!"
"I just don't like the way legs look.."

You know what you are? You're a damned pussy. That's right. You figured out that training your legs is the single hardest thing in the gym. So instead of DOING it, you try and justify NOT doing it with some pussy excuse. What you need to say is, "God, training legs are hard! Good thing I'll never have to worry about being a good bodybuilder or looking good, since I'm too much of a pussy to work them!"

The problem with your argument, Curling, is that it's based on an assumption. This assumption being that the purpose of weight training is to impress women. I will say that when I first began training it was because I was fat and I wanted to get laid. However, it seems to me that there comes a point when you outgrow that. After the initial gains slow down and it becomes harder and harder, one must have a better reason to continue training. I would hazard a guess that the majority of the people on this board are straight bodybuilders. The kind of dudes who do it for themselves because they/we have a preoccupation with size and muscle. This is the reason for training legs. The completion of the physique.

Legs!

Ok i can understand the squat problem.. I use to powerlift and had a good 500lbs roll up my neck upon bringing the weight back up...needless to say i dont squat anymore.. Hurts to have alot of weigh on the neck, but you can still train legs just as hard and heavy without squats so quit complaining... I do leg extensions with drop sets way beyond failure along with HEAVY leg presses and then leg curls the same as the leg extensions.. Maybe im genetically gifted on legs, but you can achieve good legs by that way too!

Man, I can't believe all the responses to this thread. I must have lit upon a sensitive subject. Like, I said I do do legs but I don't do squats. I work legs like jamccor does and it does build my legs so why do squats? For all you squat people you should be happy anyway one less station to wait on in the gym right?

I have another topic coming up about squats that ya'll are really not going to like but oh well maybe it will make ya think anyway.

Grizzly, you do make some good points on your "assumption" argument except if you are doing the lifting for yourself I still think you are doing it to get noticed by others and with long shorts that is still not going to happen.

I've only recently starting my leg work , it only recently clicked to me that I want to loose some fat , and I was already doing my best in other areas. So why not burns more cals by doing some legs , plus I also pickup from this board that the bigger the muscle the more cals it'll use. So why not increase the legs muscles too.
Dont flame me for realising so late , better late than never.

I have some buds that have skinny legs and large built upper bodies. They look like chickens. They don't really seem to wear shorts out too often. Symmetry is the only way. Come on, we're guys, not boys.

After many years of neglecting my Legs, I been hitting them hard for the past two years. They have grown alot however I still have to be conservative with my upper Body in order for them to even out.And I have to go super heavy with the poundges.

To anyone just getting involved in Bodybuilding/Training/Weightlifting...........start out hitting the legs !!! No sense in being Arnold Shwartz from the waist up and Shirley Temple from the waist down!!!!!!!!!!:fro: :fro: :fro:

The law of Proportion........."If evey Muscle is trained evenly and proportionally to it's size ....then every muscle will grow evenly and proportionally to it's size.":fro: :fro: :fro:

It depends on how you look at things. I don't look at squats and deadlifts as leg exercises, I look at them as the best exercises for overall strength, size, and mass. I'm only 18 and fairly skinny (but significantly bigger than before) so I've got some years to go. When I first starting training I pretty much did upper body and stayed away from leg exercises because my legs were naturally bigger. Leg exercises are now the core of my routine to get bigger and I mean everywhere, not just my lower body. I can now say that the most impressive parts of my body are my back and my thighs. BTW if you're too scared of squats, deadlifts are a great alternative.

I never work legs really. I hate it, I wont even come into the gym on leg days. I ocasionall do squats instead of deadlifts but other than that I dont like it. I hate seeing huge legs that make men look like they have no dick or else it would get squished.

Those that replied they hate training legs arePUSSIES!!! Awww, does it hurt you poor baby. Mommy will make it all better. Grow a set of balls. An "upper" bodybuilder looks like a fool to me. Bodybuilding is about proportion and size. We have alot of people in my gym that only train upper body. Sure they may look good from the waist up, but that's where it ends. And even if you have longer shorts on, you should still be able to tell if someone has good quad development. Stop making excuses and train those twigs... :bawling:

MY THOUGHTS EXACTLY!!!!!!!

Train legs you fucking pussies. Jesus Christ, the only reason I would ever have someone not train legs is if i was just getting them acquainted with the gym and I didn't want to scare them off. Once their balls had dropped from a few months of lifting I would introduce them to leg training (easy at first).

You lawn darts makes me sick.

Reason enough.

nothing looks more pathetic than seeing a guy with huge "beach muscles" but his legs are that of a 10 year old boy.

I train with a pro and he has me do legs twice a week, so I do it-It does seem to me however, that if you want a better looking upper body, you should work on it as much as possible-rather than legs

I've always believed you should lead with your legs. Whether your mission is to be a better football player or a better martial artist.

If you played any sports(including powerlifting/olympic) i would assume you work legs.
if you dont play sport and you lift weights you are a body builder.

if you dont work legs you are an upper body builder.
someone so lazy they cant put effort in to do the whole job.

I, for one, don't mind training legs at all. I sometimes even enjoy it, I like it when I can give my upper body a rest once in a while. and I've been training legs since the beginning too, even though I have a serious back condition. so all y'all PUSSIES, start training ya legs! though I can understand hardgainers point of view. at least that made sense.

LOL......this is some funny shit...really now....whos fed up of people (when you tell them u work out ) askin "How much can you bench?". If i had a quid everytime i heared that id be a damn millionaire.......fair enough bench and other upperbody exercises are very important but im sorry , anyone who neglects squats or at least other leg movements is just a pretty boy...afraid of real work. When i ask people "how much can you squat?" they say "Ummmmmmm...i dont work legs.....i want to build myself up"........im sorry but thats a lame excuse.........do urself a favour.....deal with heavy squats and stop bein a pretty boy.(Not aimed at ne one in particular btw)

Up until recently I never used to work legs. I have seen the error of my ways and now spend my hardest hours in the gym on legs. You guys are partially right when you say you cant see legs through long shorts, but why are you wearing long shorts to begin with. Is is to hide the stilts you call legs. What about those girls who see your upper body, then go home with you, watch you undress and stare awkwardly at your stilts. If you just want to look good with clothes on then by all means forget the legs. but believe me youll get alot more girls with shorter shorts and bigger legs.:fro:

Back in the day, there was this old powerlifter at the gym I used to work at. His name was Harry Brown. Every leg day, I used to see him put himself through absolute torture to find that extra excruciating rep. Being about 20 at the time, I remember asking him why he trained legs so damn hard... and he just asks me this:

"You ever seen a big ass tree with a small trunk?"

I shrugged, said no. So he says, "if you want to be a big fucking oak, you better have a big trunk."

It's true. The harder you train stumps, the bigger the rest of you will be.

Top Bottom
