Does Anybody Have Any Experience With Boxing?

I Told You So ...
EF VIP
I'm really kicking the idea around ... not boxing, so much, just getting a couple of lessons in how to HIT things properly (so I don't damage myself). I've got a home gym so adding a heavy bag and maybe a speed bag isn't a big deal.

The thing is, I'm uh, chicken ... I don't belong to a gym and the local ones don't seem to have anything anyway. There's a real boxing club not 3 miles from my house but honest to god, the idea of walking into it ... I'm afraid they'll laugh me out of the place :worried:

I do! How old are you because boxing takes a toll on your joints and bones. I woundn't worry about being laughed at because everyone started out a newb.

I'm 45, and the joints are kind of creaky (I've been working on DJD since I was in my mid teens, it's more like something to add in and not do daily). Not worried about the bones, I'm tall and big boned.

I'm trying to convince my husband to help me out, he took karate for a couple years so he's got some basic punching skills :D

Those heavy bags are hard as fricking nails, hermana. And they ain't cheap. My husband recently earned his black belt in traditional shaolin kung fu and his bag was $180.

You might want to invest initially in something like this:

Power Tower Punching Bag - On Sale for $24.95

I think it'd be fine for a beginner.

You don't really have to pound the bag hard to get the best benefits from boxing. I mean, if you want to BE a boxer you would need to. But for the average person the best benefits is the cardio stamina impact it has on you as a whole. Trust me, you go to a boxing school (or class at the gym like I do) and learn just a few basic steps, combos and drills. Then you start with shadowboxing and 15 mins of it will leave you drenched in sweat. And time goes by fast while doing it. None of this boring crap like on the bike or treadmill.

The Y only has a cardio kickboxing class, not really what I had in mind.

God indoor cardio is the most boring shit ain't it? Music, t.v., doesn't matter, the looooonggggessst, slllloooowwwest minutes of your life, ever.

I'm thinking about it, but being such an old bag really does put a damper on things ... although I'm surprised that this is the first physical fitness oriented thing my husband has EVER seemed to be vaguely interested in other than cycling, hmmm.
