Do you change your grip on deadlifts...?

I deadlift with one hand over hand one hand underhand on the bar. This is pretty much how everybody does it... but I was wondering..

I always have the same hand over hand and the same hand underhand when I grip. I don't know if this changes the development of the back muscles at all. Is this like favoring one side?

So today... after doing two sets I reversed my grip.

Do other people change grips or always do it the same? I've done the same grip all my life till now.

Every set I alternate. I do 5 sets, so whichever mixed grip I used for one training session, I start off using the opposite grip the next, so they get equally trained.

both hand, palm down...

I do move my grip more closer or further out as I do them... the further out I have my grip, it seems to work my lats more... and I like working my lats... :)

When it counts...left under and right over. I don't know anyone who can pull the same with a double over grip...

My grip is a lot stronger with left hand under and right hand over. Can't lift anything with both hands on an over hand grip.

I'm glad you asked that question because I've wondered whether I should switch up myself. FWIW, I'm a left under right over girl ... with the bar, that is.

I mix it up every set... but I definitely feel a lot more comfortable and stronger with a right under, left over.... Must be a mental thing

Here's an interesting survey....I wonder what occupations/strengths the left-over/right under people have, vs the right-overleft under. You know, creative vs analytical.

I'm right over, left under, and I'm an accountant.

I'm right over, left under. I've always been strong in the natural sciences. Plan on going into marine biology after college and grad school and such.

You might be onto something.

Well, maybe so. I spent 5 years in a med program, and the undergrad is genetics.

Ok, Left-overs...are you musicians or what?

left under, right over, and a social worker
I've always pulled this way but have even development on both sides of my body

this may be totally unrelated, but in the midddle of the night, this makes sense to me..

i saw a study that had people training only one side of their body, but the other side grew also. i'm not sure if it grew as much or not, i'd really have to look it up to see, but i'm too tires.

maybe could help people train around injureis? i duno

I always thought it was a handedness issue, though I can see where Spatts is going with the left brain right brain idea.

Jeremys, now that you mention it, I think I've read that someplace, too.

Jeremy, I too have heard of that. Something like 40% muscule increase in the right arm led to a 35% increase in the left. I think the thing I read had biceps being trained. Not sure though.

If you use an over/under grip, you should definitely change it around.... not to say you need to change to a pronated or supinated grip, but at least swap hands.

It works the biceps and forearms unevenly, and today I was at a seminar where he said people generally pull harder with their stronger arm in that situation.... so for obvious reasons, it's benficial to change it up.

oh, and I'm a designer and have been the artist in the family for all my life.....but....also part programmer....I guess it's all just problem solving....

i warm up for deads with right over left under, do my heavier pulls and maxes with left over and right under.

Same here. I don't know enough physiology to back this up, but I'd be amazed if there was anything more than a minor difference between doing the same grip every time and switching up. I don't think it's necessary.

That is why I change my grip every rep.
